My middle daughter (8) is a big PJ Harvey fan, also based on listening to her in the car with me. Her favourite is "Good Fortune". I have to be a bit careful though 'cos Polly's lyrics are sometimes a bit near the knuckle. So lyrics about murderous envy of a lesbian lover a bit risque, huh? 'Sophisticated taste nonetheless.

murderous envy of a lesbian lover Is that what "Good Fortune" is all about!? But fair play, Al, I guess my post came across somewhat pretentiously, "Yah, I forbid my children to listen to that Girls Aloud / Rachel Stevens / McFly rubbish, they are fed a non-stop aural diet of PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Tori Amos". Actually it's not really like that, although they do enjoy bouncing up and down in the car to "Good Fortune" and some of the other tracks on "Stories From The City...".

You didn't come off as pretentious to me. I have two grown daughters whom have survived through worse. e.g. "Skinny Puppy" Also my youngest was sent home from school (at 15) for wearing a T-shirt (that I didn't know she owned for the band "Revolting Cocks" So watch out. ;D

'Heard KOTM today playing over the P.A. system @ "Staples" (office supply)! Oh how fun! If it was me I would probably start singing and dancing, without even noticing people's stares! But that's just me I guess!

'Heard KOTM today playing over the P.A. system @ "Staples" (office supply)! I have yet to hear anything from Aerial played anywhere, other than my stereo. It almost like it exists only for me (and a select few of you ;D ). Did it fill you with joy during your otherwise mundane shopping experience, Al? ;D LOL Come to think of it... I probably don't hear is since I don't get around much! ;D LOL

I looked around, as if in my own little world, to see everyone oblivious to what was playing. Granted, the volume was too low; I was still pleased - and surprised to hear Kate Bush in a mainstream office supply chain store. I felt like telling the manager that he had good taste. But, it probably wasn't even his call. Well I do and this is the first Kate Bush song I've heard in public - including radio, in years.

Why isn't she played as much as she should be?

I think I recall hearing Sensual World recently... but I could be dreaming. No, I remember... I was at my salon. She was playing a sort of ambient alternative station... like Enya and Sarah Brightman. I tried to explain how awesome this song was and that my stylist would like her. She seemed to look right through me, so I dropped it. I wonder what sort of programmed mu-sak? was playing at Staples? Well either way, aren't those the little happinesses in life that makes it worth while?
Why isn't she played as much as she should be?
As much as we love her... I don't think she appeals to the mass audience. They don't "get" her music and then just dismiss her as "strange".

As for the Citizen Kane reference, Kane is based on William Randolph Hearst who built Hearst Castle (which you can visit nowadays) which he filled, indeed, with "priceless junk". I mean, it is beautiful artwork, but Kane (and I assume Hearst, for that matter) was such a cold-hearted bastard he couldn't really appreciate it. He may as well have hung up black velvet paintings instead of Rembrandts for all the joy he got from them. I'd have to argue this point. This isn't exactly what Welles was trying to put across in the film. It's a cynical study on the American dream. Kane acquired his junk in his pursuit of happiness... which in the end gave him none. Not because he was heartless... quite the contrary. The simplicity of the relationship with Susan, in the beginning, as well as originally with his wife, shows his capacity for youth and affection. He is corrupted by his dream. When he refers, in his dying words, to Rosebud... brought about by the delicate image in a snowglobe... it is that realization of loss, but too late. No one ever knows what it was, and the highly important artifact is burned along with all the other junk of his home. It's an easy film to summarize due to its acceptance into the mass consciousness... "it's a sled, right?" Many critics exclaim over its virtues and expert filming. I adore this film and my feelings about this story and the filmmakers come from passionate reading about the subject. It's not for everyone, but it is truly a worthwhile effort to view it. As for the song, Kate refers to this and compares it to Elvis... automatically making it a comment on the lifestyle of high celebrity. Is Elvis happy now, when it's all over... She even replicates the house and images in the video, along with the sled, which is mentioned in the Mojo interview as being displayed in her living room. And one further note, as for Hearst... he spent many happy young years touring Europe and studying history and art with his beloved mother. He had an understanding of art and its value... but chose to integrate into a home to be enjoyed as art was intended. Even though we can view the art in the museum-like home now... it is without life and spirit... which it probably had in its day. I won't speak for the man, but I'm sure he was just as complex.

Good post ^ You know, I find it hard not to be moved by art, if the circumstances are right, regardless of income level or education. It's all about being receptive and letting it touch you. Not to say every piece and form will reach you; but, if you can experience some of the touring exhibits of the masters, I almost guarantee you will get a buzz. The texture, shadows and movement convey truth and purpose. Giving meaning to existence and celebrating the joy of life as well as understanding the tragedies is what elevates our souls and our society. Whether Elvis had sensory overload, which I think Kate touches on with Hearst as well as 'The King', is central, I think, to the theme of epiphany in KOTM. The retrospective element of stripping away the contrived and plastic elements of fame, which I also think is an allegory of Kate in a self-help sort of attempt here, is there to underscore the value and worth of the everlasting qualities of simple joy and happiness. So I don't think the lack of high art appreciation is the point either, as you point out Zan. It is the context of value as realized through joy that shines through the emptiness of just owning things and being famous.

I never saw anyone answer why Kate uses an affected tone for the beginning of the song--- she is imitating Elvis's distinct singing style.
And the PJ Harvey song referencing the murderous lesbian is 'Catherine' from 'Is this Desire':
I envy the road The ground you tread under I envy the wind Your hair riding over I envy the pillow Your head rests and slumbers I envy to murderous Envy your lover
