It doesn't the first time, but it does the 2nd time. And what is being said at the end??? Here's a thought I had about why Kate is better than the rest----As she sings "The wind is whistling" you do not hear the wind whistling until AFTER she says that, avoiding a musical cliche. SHE IS SO BRILLIANT! This isn't to say that Kate isn't brilliant, but... the one aspect of The Saxophone Song that I dislike is that stupid blasted saxophone! This song seems to be sung from a child's POV, who is most likely to think of antiques and whatever as being priceless junk - and hey, it was the kid, the young CFK who actually was "in the snow with rosebud" at least for a moment or two. Also, the KotM picture looks to me like it's a kid - not that I've looked closely. ...just musing.

The saxophone is the song! the smokey tone, the kicked backed.. I'm high and smooth attitude it sets, a saxophone song without a saxophone? not even Kate could yank that out of her witchy hat! A childs point of view? No, a child would not understand the term priceless junk and unless you believe that priceless means worthless then this part of your musing doesn't work. And BTW,I also think that the king is a kid(and I have looked closely).

I would have preferred The Piano Song I suppose but as a result of your enthusiasm for winded instruments I will give the Sax another chance. Re: KotM - ehh, I don't know... a child may not undestand the term "priceless junk" but he could understand that despite the worthlessness of the object he'd better not damage it. "Priceless junk" then is a concession to time constraints... or not. And yeah, it's just for amusement. Hello. (EDIT: I just noticed that the above "hello" could appear to be sarcastic - I meant it as a greeting.)

If anyone could, she could. This is the one thing that always bothered me about "Violin" - where there is room for an amazing "Devil Went Down to Georgia" type violin piece, she sticks a GUITAR solo. The song is called "Violin", not "Guitar".

The song is called "Violin", not "Guitar". And a very tasty solo it is too - the late Alan Murphy at his liquid, shimmering best. But surely Kevin Burke also plays some fine violin on the track?

I know, the song isn't totally violin-free (although it does seem tacked on as an afterthought. I can see Kate listening to the master tape and thinking, "wait a minute, I forgot something!"). And the guitar work IS great. However, that's my original point: why is the guitar the main focus of a song called "Violin"?

I'm listening to "King Of The Mountain" tonight having downloaded it on iTunes this afternoon. Kate's voice and sheer musical brilliance brings me out in goosebumps all over. It's just so great to hear new material of this quality. I've not got much idea what the heck the lyrics are all about but it did strike me that she sings the first verse in a very indistinct style, deliberately sort of slurring the words together and not pronouncing consonants properly. This contrasts with the rest of the song where the diction is a lot clearer. I wonder why she did that.

I noticed that too, like she is intentionally muting the lyrics. Although I think it continues into the 2nd verse too. Her songs take several million listens to fully understand methinks sometimes... BTW welcome Maddog! Feel free to foam at the mouth here!

Thanks for the welcome Sheila. I'm not really mad though and I don't plan to be doing much foaming at the mouth . I agree with your comments on Page 1 of this thread BTW, the bit about the effect of the wind whistling coming in a couple of bars after the lyric, I love that too. It's that sort of detail and structure and sheer genius (yes, an overused word, I know) that makes me so excited aboout the new album, I can't wait! You're also right that the blurred diction in the song does carry on into the second verse, however towards the end of the song where she sings "the wind it blows the door closed" (great breathing control in there BTW), the diction is also crystal clear with the "d" at the end of "closed" pronounced clearly. I thought some more about the meaning of the song but as always I tend to think my own interpretations are too obvious. I thought that the references to Elvis and the rumours about him (waitress expecting his baby, photograph of him dancing on his grave) might be an analogy to the sort of rumours that Kate has experienced about herself over the last 15 years.

Don't mean to hog things on here but I've got some more thoughts for you:
1. New interpretation of "King Of The Mountain" from my 4 year old daughter, who listened to it in the car today. "This is a reindeer song." (Me) "Why?". (Her) "Because the reindeer is the king of the mountain".
Well there you go, now we know. Actually she really likes the song, she's been singing the words "King of the mountain" at the top of her voice all afternoon.
2. I really like the guitar part that goes from one speaker to the other, it reminds me of my favourite track on "Dark Side Of The Moon", namely "Any Colour You Like".
3. Here is the UK, Channel 4 is showing a "Kate Bush Video Exclusive" at 10.40pm - I guess it's the video for "King Of The Mountain", I have my VCR set....

But yeah, KotM has greatly raised my expectations for the album. This is basically just to say "hello" and also to say that I've enjoyed reading your comments. ehh... so how is the video? EDIT: I just saw it, and it's good but I'm surprised that it is so Elvis-centered - it just seems so straightforward.

It does seem a bit literal compared to our interpretaions, doesn't it? But I like it a lot!
That's so cute about your daughter MadDog!!

That's so cute about your daughter MadDog!! I have 3 daughters, she's the youngest (Erin). My middle daughter (8) is a big PJ Harvey fan, also based on listening to her in the car with me. Her favourite is "Good Fortune". I have to be a bit careful though 'cos Polly's lyrics are sometimes a bit near the knuckle. This is basically just to say "hello" and also to say that I've enjoyed reading your comments. Hiya kevan, glad to make your acquaintance!
