And although I love Nina Hagen, the clip you chose rather makes her sound like Bert Lahr as the cowardly lion. Which is a comment she would probably regard as being complimentary in nature. heh yeah I looked for that clip specifically, and was considering uploading it myself if it wasn't there - breathtaking! Actually it was a quite engaging and unique performance. There's a difference in 'unique' and 'out there' The reason I find her unique is because she has mastered several vocal techniques - Hindustani, Carnatic, Tamil etc, and combined them flawlessly. I find her voice to be thoroughly unique. (also I had no trouble seeing the whole 12:41 video - try again 'cos the last song is the best ) And Sade has maybe the most tempered and subtle voice of any female singer around. The reason I chose the two singers I linked over Skye was purely based on how much I listened to each. I love Moorcheeba, but I listen to a lot of music. So I had to narrow down to what I listened to - whilst observing the parameters and criteria of the thread title. Oh, sorry...I answered the question too early. Moorcheeba, Moby, Tricky and Massive Attack All have their guests vocalists to thank for their respective successes' (IMO) As for these allegations, I hope she wins. They are now not in my rotation. Tony Bennett recorded an album with K.D. I trust his ear. He said that 100 years from now "people will be listening to K.D. Lang" Her voice is musically complex. Her range is controlled and her voice both guttural and clear. She wipes me out. I know of no other female singer that sounds like her. That seems unique to me...Granted she looks and sounds kind of like Wayne Newton though. However, I truly enjoy her. Him....not so much. Try this one: CLICK HEREIf that doesn't work then she just doesn't 'speak' to you. BTW - from your list I forgot to mention earlier thet Johnny Cash is entirely appropriate as a finalist in this category.

O.K. Here's another video from my list. I think Loreena McKennitt is unique, if for no other reason, because her voice is superior to 95% or more of the recording artists that are in the marketplace. She also combines classic poetry with her own and sets it to culturally complex rhythms and instruments acquired by traveling and studying Celtic and Moorish customs and history. Enjoy - CLICK HERE

I'm trying to distinguish between 'unique voice' and 'unique singer' and perhaps i shouldn't be. Ehhh I never cared too much for Sade but yes she does have a unique voice. Then again, so does Skye. Than again, again, I didn't pick her either... yeah, there are just a few spots available. Heve you heard Skye's solo album? I haven't and keep meaning (and forgetting) to check it out. Morcheeba's guest vocalists were few... oh hey, here's one: Kurt Wagner. I said that there was one Nashville band I could think of that I liked, Lambchop. Well, Kurt Wagner, who sings with Skye on What New York Couples Fight About on the Charango album, is the leader of Lambchop - an interesting band.

'Just bought a new CD today. It is titled "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" by K.D. Lang. These are - all but one - covers by Ms Lang of songs from distinguished writers. The credits include: Neil Young Joni Mitchell Jane Siberry Leonard Cohen - to name a few. This adds some credibility to K.D. in my book. Her choice of material and her work with Tony Bennett distinguishes her as a unique voice, Don't let this thread die yet.

I'd nominate Siberry as having a unique voice before I would do so for lang. I don't dislike her, but to use terminology you've used, she just doesn't speak to me. I do agree with your choice of Loreena McKennitt. Did you check to see if youtube has live performances of her? I didn't, but I thought about doing so... I was very lazy. hey you had a Orbison-lang duet - well, here's a duet of which I think both ends are a bit more unusual. It is a remarkable video not only for the song itself, but also in that it features another initialled female, and most importantly because it proves conclusively that there is someone actually whiter than Nick Cave. ;D www.youtube.com/watch?v=37-V8ZXPhE8

As I recall, I had looked before. I know live footage exists too. The Performances at Toronto and Paris were spectacular. I saw some of the concert on PBS. I believe the Queen Mother was in attendance @ Paris. Anyway, I'll look again. They're so white they're almost clear. ;D 'Good link. Polly Jean is one of my favorites as well.

I didn't notice the other video but I'll look again at some point. I saw one listed for... ehh I think it is Dante's Prayer but I can't remember now for sure - anyway, I couldn't play it as it is in mov format and something is messed up with my player. I tried again to listen to audio samples but that won't work either. Hey, so where are we in this process? I'm ready to vote or something!

Well, I'll give everyone until this weekend to fine tune their list and to provide links to promote the choices. Then we'll conduct several polls to find our favorite 10 by consensus.

While we wait on others to finish up their lists and links, I'll share the rest of mine one at a time. After you watch this video I challenge anyone to deny that this artist has one of the most unique voices of all time. This live vocal performance is of stellar quality. Here is Van Morrison with 'The Band' performing "Caravan" Please watch it HERE I'd like to hear your feedback. EDIT - the link isn't working, so please look it up on youtube, (Van Morrison "Caravan" as keywords) Thanks!

Thanks for the tip off Al, I look forward to seeing the video. Always liked Van the Man - fascinating to see him in his early, less grizzled, days performing with Them..

The link isn't working due to the uploader having removed the video. Van Morrison is a worthy candidate anyway. EDIT: There is however a short snippet of Van singing Caravan from an LP as Johnny Fever lip-synchs it.

I just don't know as much about the members as I do some other groups. It's kind of like what Kevin had said earlier. I respect their work more than I actually listen. 'Same with "Dead Can Dance" - who I actually enjoy - but don't listen to as much. I must be in the right mood to here them or Cirque DuSoliel/soundtracks etc...
