Now about Gabriel... on US, be sure to give Washing Of The Water a proper listen - it's one of my top faves and a good display of the emotion in his vocals. I now agree. When I first came up with the concept I did not realize all the burgeoning choices that would well up. I knew I would narrow down Mariah Carey and Celine Dion right away. The YUK! commentary being a nod to my displeasure with their content and style. I'll go further in eliminating the 'novelties that are Barry Gibb's falsetto (someone else can pick him and argue it if they want to) and Aaron Neville's quavering. The later only a bit above the Joe Cocker nominee IMHO. I will check these out and comment later. Also I will post links to my top eight - which BTW is now the maximum that can be nominated (for poll question purposes) I will be adding Sade to mine in place of several that I must edit out.

haha well... I'll say now that I don't like Joe Cocker... but there's no one that sounds like him, that I've heard anyway. Thankfully.
But hey, here's one that I do like, and who is very distinctive, in a good way, and is someone I know you like - Van Morrison.
I'm not nominating him, I'll stick with my five (although if I wasn't so lazy I'd go back and include Sinead O'Connor.)
Oh and btw, you've heard Antony already from the repeated songs thread - it's the Antony from Antony and the Johnsons.

I haven't heard it - I know you're addressing Al - but anyway... my favorite Gabriel song for vocals is Rhythm of the Heat. Oh, I wasn't just addressing Al, jump in whenever... I only thought he'd be interested in that part. ;D I have so many faves, and I do adore that one. I've always tried to sell Al on it with his love of percussion. Actually, that's my husband's all time favorite Gabriel song. Great minds think alike, hmm?

O.K. Time for the final rounds. Everyone come up with a top ten. From there we'll have them go head-to-head in a series of elimination polls. At that point we can discuss each artist in detail when they vie one-on-one. Rank them in order and state your criteria. If you want to convince everyone of your choices, provide links to any that aren't as mainstream or popular. Mine are: 1) Kate Bush - Perhaps for obvious aforementioned reasons 2) Loreena McKennitt - A crystal clear, gifted voice 3) Sade - The most soothing and soulful voice I know of 4) K.D. Lang - A complex and Patsy Cline-ish character to her voice that has a classic and enduring quality 5) Cyndi Lauper - An emotive and energetic element. 6) Van Morrison - A brilliant vocalist with gruff and melodic qualities co-existing simultaneously. 7) Susheela Raman - Her Indian language and Carnatic delivery rivals the depth and soul of Sade 8) Peter Gabriel - A most unique throaty yet piercing vocal style that projects feeling and drama. 9) Roy Orbison - One of the best voices to ever sing. Only the style of music keeps him this low on my list 10) Don Henley - A truly unique character and quality that can patiently tell good stories. His voice fits his style of songwriting so well. And as a drummer, I have an affinity with his rythmic sense. My criteria was that I had to listen to the work - not just admire their unique qualities. Links to come soon. (Under construction)

Thanks Mat. I enjoyed the links. I've decided to, because I personally have a short attention span, post one link at a time for my list. Follow suit if you like, it is optional. But, I'm hopin we will get more commentary this way. And if you can find video or complete songs - more the better. Here is a duet from two artists on my list - K.D. Lang and Roy Orbison: CLICK HERE'comments?

So, here's my (new) list of 10 singers I both like and who have, to these ears anyway, unique voices. I am not going for most unique anymore for that really lends itself to most grotesque. bah Anyway, here it is: 1. Robert Smith Try this experiment: listen to The Cure while wearing headphones and sing along with the song. Have someone nearby and get a comment on how you sounded. Yeah, really bad. Next sing along with The Cure while the music is coming out of the speakers and ask how you sound. Yeah, pretty good. There is no need to sing in key when singing a song from The Cure. Unique. 2. Johnny Cash "Hello, my name is Johnny Cash..." 3. Klaus Nomi www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELknoJC2WEQ&search=klaus%20nomiA bit strange, but could sing a mad hilarious tenor. 4. Joanna Newsom www.youtube.com/watch?v=y55RIbj4a8AIt takes a while, but if you ever 'get' the voice, you're gotten good. At least that's how it was for me. 5. Antony Hegerty www.youtube.com/watch?v=FExAi5ff5XEbtw, for anyone who is aware of Rasputina - the cello player is Julia Kent, who used to be in Rasputina. 6. Nina Hagen www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgGSNYentdoCan Nina work a camera? btw Sheila, this is from the video you have. 7. Sinead O'Connor Well OK, everyone's heard her. 8. Joan Baez 9. Peter Gabriel 10. David Bowie

I did look at a live version of Pretty Woman while I was there, and yeah, Orbison certainly is a good choice for the list. btw, good idea, going to youtube for these samples.

Oh I think these are some of Orbison's best vocals. You should look up "Constant Craving" @ YouTube for a better video of K.D. Her best album is "Ingenue"

David Bowie Of your list Kevan, I liked Anthony Hegerty the best of the lesser known artists you listed. And although I love Nina Hagen, the clip you chose rather makes her sound like Bert Lahr as the cowardly lion. Joanna Newsome was just too unpolished and unprofessional for my liking - but raw talent no doubt. And Klaus Nomi does have a piercing tenor, but Lou Christie's original is still better to me. Otherwise your list is great. The Youtube links are so much more revealing.

O.K. Here is another link from my list. It is my least favorite song of her's but it is in English. If you would, please go to "Yahoo" and key in "Susheela" on the 'Video' search feature. There is a 12 minute video there that showcases her voice and talent much better. (the url was so long and complex I did not link it) But here is a sample in the interim: CLICK HEREAnd while you're here, I'll go ahead and provide a link to Sade. "Maureen" is my favorite from her, but this one, "Stronger Than Pride" is also good: CLICK HEREDiscussion encouraged.

Shakira really does have a good voice - and unique as well. Her Colombian and Lebanese heritage has, I'm sure. a cultural influence on her music as much as it does on her movement - which is most pleasant to watch. However, I would put her in the same position as perhaps Christina Aguilera, whom I think has a great voice, but her style and material is not what I listen to. There are so many great talents out there. May be we should, after this thread, start one for strongest or most powerful voices. There these two, I think, would fit better - as would Aretha Franklin, Patti La Belle, Thelma Houston and the like. Oh yeah, and doesn't Elizabeth Frazer do some vocals for "Massive Attack"?

And although I love Nina Hagen, the clip you chose rather makes her sound like Bert Lahr as the cowardly lion. Which is a comment she would probably regard as being complimentary in nature. heh yeah I looked for that clip specifically, and was considering uploading it myself if it wasn't there - breathtaking! Heretic! Klaus came from outer space, to save the human race. OK, your two recent links: Susheela - That is a heckuva video at youtube. I'm surprised it's there. I also looked at the 12 minute video (although it "timed out" at about the 10 minute mark) - yes, I like her but I don't consider her voice (and I'll include Sade in this category as well) to be more unique than, for example, Skye's. I'm curious why you chose these two and not, just for example heh, Skye. Oh, btw, I read something somewhere (I can't even recall where it was now... wikipedia I think) where the new Morcheeba singer, who is apparently now an ex-singer, is sueing one of the brothers for sexual harassment. kd lang Well yes, she's a good singer, but not one I consider to be among the most unique.
