Today I was rediscovering Peter Gariel - it had been a while. Tonight I was reminded of another couple of unusual artists. The following artists comprise, to me, the most unique and/or gifted voices from my perspective. These are regardless of lyrical content or subject matter. 'Not even liking the style is relevant here. Share your list if you'd like. Mine are: Kate Bush Peter Gabriel Willie Nelson Tammy Wynette Sarah Brightman Mariah Carey (YUK!) Patsy Cline Tom Waits Sinead O'Conner Tracy Chapman Roy Orbison Loreena McKennitt Sushella Ramen Tony Bennett K.D. Lang Billie Holliday Joni Mitchell Dusty Springfield Linda Ronstadt Emmy Lou Harris Roger Whitaker Bing Crosby Frank Sinatra Aaron Neville Celine Dion (YUK) ! Limit your list to 25 or less, using any or all of the above if you wish....Then we'll vote for the top ten in order....

Probably a few more - will add when I think of them.
Obviously a couple of mine have unique voices that don't necessarily come from their mouths..

Klaus Nomi Joanna Newsom Antony Hegerty Sinead O'Connor Nina Nastasia Nina Hagen Nina Simone Robert Smith Loreena McKennitt Bob Dylan Tom Waits Nick Cave Cyndi Lauper Johnny Cash David Tibet Patsy Cline Peter Gabriel Jim Morrison Morrissey Siouxsie Sioux Roy Orbison Patti Smith Joe Cocker Stuart Staples and shame on you, Al: Skye I'm basing this on "most unique voices" rather than "most unique singers" - I'd definitely include David Byrne in a most unique singers list but (obviously now ) not in a most unique voices list.

These I like from your list (and mine) Sinead O'Connor- check Nina Simone - check Robert Smith - good choice Loreena McKennitt - check Tom Waits - check Nick Cave - good Cyndi Lauper - I meant to include her!! Johnny Cash - Thought about it....Yes Patsy Cline - check Peter Gabriel - check Jim Morrison - Great!!! Siouxsie Sioux - Good one Roy Orbison - check Patti Smith - Yes! Yes, of course Skye Edwards (formerly) from Morcheeba. My list needs some work. to include the above. Also the guest vocalists from Massive Attack (Tracy Thorn and Shara Nelson) and Carolyn Leonhart and. Bjork and Thelma Houston ('I've Got the Power" fame)....25 - not enough!! p.s. Without his lyrics Bob Dylan's never makes it. I can't abide Joe Cocker either... Bad doesn't = unique does it.?

And I can't argue with any of your other selections, as esoteric as some of them may be (If I have never heard of them e.g. Zarah Leander, they must be J/K ;D) Especially I like Leonard Cohen, Freddie Mercury and of course you know I like Lisa Gerrad from DCD. Actually there are two CD's of his in que at present. The percussion laden "Us", which was the impetus for this thread (specifically the vocals on "Steam") is one. The other is the soundtrack for "Last Temptation" (no, not David Ruffin ) The latter is contemplative and emotionally charged. It takes undivided attention, for me, to enjoy. And I know that you like soundtracks as well.

'Good to hear from you again. I like your list although Michael Stipe, and Beck, being so over-played are not my cup of tea. And Macy Gray is in that category as well. However, I will agree that she has a very unique voice. All the others (that I have heard of) are worthy contenders to me. Describe Diamana Gallas and Thom Yorke. I may give them a spin.... Oh and Shakira's best voice, even though her singing is good, may be her movement :::drool:::

I don't question any of your choices Adey. I'm not familar with all of them other than by reputation and limited exposure. Like Brubeck? This is true if your interpret 'voice' as influence. I was thinking of actual unique charactersitics and delivery of vocals as criteria, but I see what you mean. Tis of no matter unless we have a poll though. (Poll though? ...I need an editor )

Well we seem to agree on a bunch. You might like Zarah Leander. It's a bit of a strange listen, extremely operatic, proud and German, touched with sadness and melancholy. She was the voice of the war for all of Germany, and Europe. Many war veterans and refugees still become emotional at the sound of her voice. She was Hitler's favorite star and he was supposedly completely awestruck by her. She was non-political, being of Swedish desent, and lived and retired there. I'll fill you in others, if you're interested. Now about Gabriel... on US, be sure to give Washing Of The Water a proper listen - it's one of my top faves and a good display of the emotion in his vocals. And always thought you'd like Passion... with all the percussion. I also have somewhere Passion Sources, the collection of traditional music that inspired him. The first fave that comes to mind is It Is Accomplished, but The Feeling Begins is one of the best tracks. Which do you like? As for your voices... I can't in good faith agree with Mariah Carey, just too annoying. Maybe with better material and training and use of her instrument, she could have been great. I'll give you Patsy Cline, Dusty Springfield and really many on the list. However, I also can't second Aaron Neville.. it's a unique voice, like Barry Gibb, but a shtick that was long overused. I have to say the only one I am not familiar with her is Sushella Raman. When we go back to edit our lists down, which we should... I think we should have to site a display of their extraordinary talents to support their nomination. Hmm? Maybe a link of possible. By the way, I think I'm going to have to add JULIE ANDREWS to my list. Probably one of the most identifiable voices of the 20th century, just by sheer range and diction. You try to sing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious BACKWARDS! LOL And she yodels. ;D
