what do you think are the best 5 (since the decade is only half over) albums of the new millenium so far?
mine: 1. kate bush - aerial (i know it isn't out yet, but it's kate, you know) 2. tori amos - scarlet's walk 3. PJ Harvey - stories from the city, stories from the sea 4. Bjork - medulla 5. beck - sea change (it's still growing on me so maybe it will rank higher later)

5 favs so far... 1 Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch 2 CocoRosie - La Maison de Mon Reve 3 The Fiery Furnaces - Gallowsbird's Bark 4 Antony and the Johnsons - s/t 5 Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands 6 The Dresden Dolls - s/t edit: 6 is an ugly number... 7 Moby - Hotel 8 Of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic 9 Sarah Slean - Day One 9 Morcheeba - Charango 9 Clare Fader - The Elephant's Baby 9 The Decemberists - Picaresque 10 Leonard Cohen - Ten New Songs There's too many good new albums to stop at 5, even when you're not cheating and listing albums that haven't yet come out. (though of course it's sure to be the best)

I initially thought more of their self-titled album but now I prefer this one. I'm not sure that I have a favorite.. hrmm... I suppose it's Spiralling. ehh... is this one of the songs you don't like?

Fistfull of Love is one that I didn't initially much care for either. I wasn't crazy about the subject matter, and could still do without it, but since Antony is unusual I think it's reasonable to assume that it's not about violence towards women which is what my first foggy thoughts concluded it was about. This may not have played a part in your aversion to the song but since it did in mine I tought I'd mention it. The main reason that I now like this song is that while Antony's music is quite unique the songs within the albums are very similar in both arrangement and delivery. Fistful therefore, with its Motown-like production makes for a nice change of pace. I think of it in this way as being similar to Happy Phantom and The Wrong Band from Tori's first two albums - they're not my favorite tracks from the albums but really I consider them to be the ones that stand out the most. Man is the Baby I like despite having heard far better live versions of it. I particularly like the final line: Weakness sown... overgrown... man is the baby. But for today we are the men for liking Antony! ;D Hey for you or anyone who has heard both of them - how does PJ Harvey's Stories From... compare to Rid of Me?

Hey for you or anyone who has heard both of them - how does PJ Harvey's Stories From... compare to Rid of Me?i actually prefer Stories.... much more than Rid of Me mainly because i think steve albini did a really lousy job of production on ROM (putting pj's voice behind the music, and not in the front like it should be) and even managed to ruin some songs because of it. also the songs in ROM are a bit too brutal for my taste, compared to Stories.. which is far more accessible

Hey for you or anyone who has heard both of them - how does PJ Harvey's Stories From... compare to Rid of Me?it's a better album imo, it's great from start to end, especially where you least expect it, some excellent rock tracks on it, i love the way she closes the album with the last 2 tracks, especially we float

no doubt about it, as i said from start to end, i'm simply pointing out the least obvious so he'll hear the whole thing...hey, and what about 'this is love' ..now that song rocks, without a doubt, her best work.

OK, a report back now on Stories from the City...
I'm not as enthused by it as much you two are but I do like it. My favs after just a few listens are Big Exit, Kamikaze, and Beautiful Feeling. I do find it to drag in spots - but you know, different tastes and all... it's a good album.
oh and I do agree with the criticism of the production of Rid of Me - to a point - it certainly could have been better but only on Hwy 61 Revisited does it particularly detract from my enjoyment of the music.
