The premise of this is nice and simple:
Name 20 great albums. This time they don't have to be important, they may possibly be your favourites. Add a few lines about each recording if you feel so inclined.
Similarly, (and you may wish to do this in a seperate post) name 20 great songs. They could be album tracks/single releases whatever.
Because we all share a particular fondness for Kate Bush, you can include 3 of her recordings for free (both categories, album & song) in each list without going into your quota of 20. If you want to include more than this, then your quota is reduced accordingly. ie 3 KB recordings + 20 others. 4 KB recordings + 19 others, 5 KB recordings + 18 others and so on. Got it?
Ok, let's see who wants to play..

Thanks Paul & RT for your responses here. I will post mine if members continue to support the Forum despite it's recent traumas. Cheers Guys. nb. Nothing from Little Eartquakes RT? nope, I'm afraid not! I only count a few of the songs on it as being in my top Tori list (of about 60 songs )... it's a very clever album, don't get me wrong, but I find that a lot of it is very deliberately done, so that Tori could get herself off the ground. My favourite songs on there are "Precious Things," "Tear in Your Hand" and "Little Earthquakes." Oh, and "Mother." (that's a low count for Tori albums ) I much prefer the lush melodic and orchestral feel of Under the Pink with its eccentric lyrics and fierce storytelling, and the cut-at-the-knees anger and despair of Boys for Pele with its raw and thought provoking lyrics and powerful emotional openness. My two favourite albums of all time, by far

Thanks for that. One day I will come back to Tori Amos - if I need a guide I'll know where to come. Actually, I loved Little Earthquakes, it's in my collection and is much played. I don't necessarily agree with all of your choices from there - Winter & Silent All These Years are big omissions for me.
I saw her at the Town Hall in B'ham, after LE was released. It's quite an intimate venue and she came across very well - especially with her 'side saddle' approach to sitting at a piano. And my God, what a piano player she is. A graduate of the Julliard School I understand.

Winter & Silent All These Years are big omissions for me. Thank you RT. And you too Adey, for this thread. I will have to get back to it with my top choices when I get a chance. I suppose I am having a hard time between great albums and my personal favorites, but I think I'll go with the latter. A good point was made here, that I noticed was lacking lately. Actual reading of thoughful posts and addressing points made within. It seems like a simple gesture, but so necessary to feel that any of it was worth the effort. I have felt that at many times, and it has caused me to retreat. Basically, just your referencing RT's Tori Amos choices shows him you cared about his post. I will further that by adding that I agree with Adey, like I quoted above. I am a big fan, by any means, but I believe that discovering Tori years ago was on the direct path that led me to Kate. I will also someday try to rediscover Tori, but at the time, something about her just didn't "click" with me, if you know what I mean. However, there are lyrics in Silent and Crucify that I come back to over and over: "My scream got lost in a paper cup, You think there's a heaven, Where some screams have gone..." and "Will you ever learn you're just an empty cage girl, If you kill the bird..." That last line directly connects with a favorite Kate lyric from Leave It Open that effects me deeply: "I kept it in a cage, Watched it weeping, but I made it stay." So, thanks for keeping it going... and I will be back to this with my list when I get a chance soon. By the way, I also think prior choices on this thread: Garbage Version 2.0 (my choice: The Trick is to Keep Breathing) & Gabriel 3 (My choice: Family Snapshot) were inspired! Love to hear some more.

Xan, as may be expected, your thoughts on Tori Amos are the same as mine. I went there, looked around, was very interested, promised to come back then went home..
From the get go, it was clear that she is a serious talent. I understand completely why she is held in such high esteem by her fans. I enjoyed seeing some of the lyrics posted here; my favourites are also in Crucify & Silent.. " Excuse me but can I be you for a while, my dog won't bite if you sit real still " and later, " Boy you best pray that I bleed real soon, hows that thought for you? " Brilliant stuff.

In no particular order, here are my 20 great albums:
1. Crime of the Century - Supertramp. The breakthrough album, darker than the commercial hit recordings to come. Mainly conceptual. Stand out tracks, Dreamer/School/Rudy/Bloody Well Right. Stone cold classic.
2. Abbey Road - The Beatles. Though followed by Let It Be, these were the Beatles last recordings made together. Reveals them to be as fresh as ever. The medley at the end is a landmark.
3. Sgt Pepper - The Beatles. No words necessary.
4. The Kick Inside - Kate Bush.
5. Never for Ever - Kate Bush.
6. The Dreaming - Kate Bush.
7. Hounds of Love - Kate Bush.
8. The Red Shoes - Kate Bush.
Kate has never made a bad album. In my opinion, these are the best of them.
9. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John. Still his best collection of work.
10. Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy - Elton John. His one full on concept album, the story of his and Bernie's beginnings. Some find it an acquired taste, I loved it from the day it came into the shops. I waited months for this to be released.
11. Tumbleweed Connection - Elton John. John/Taupin wrote this convincing portrait of rural America before they'd even been there. As comfortable to me as a pair of old slippers and an old, old friend.
12. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie. Another concept album - you could argue that this was an early triumph of rock theatre, but not with me. Matchless.
13. Tommy - The Who. The fact that it has dated badly makes this no less a masterpiece. Townsend is one of the great popular music writers.
14. Made in Japan - Deep Purple. To these ears, the greatest ever (live) rock recording. Blackmore/Lord/Paice are incredible here, demonstrating amazing improvisational prowess. Gillan & Glover are also on top form.
15. Rainbow Rising - Rainbow. The 2nd greatest etc etc. Tarot Woman & Stargazer standout.
16. The Song Remains the Same - Led Zepellin. Th e 3rd greatest etc. More subtle than Purple, and another incredible live recording.
17. Tapestry - Carole King. An American national treasure, great songs and performances by a fabulous writer.
18. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys. Priceless.
19. Inside Job - Don Henley. The follow up to End of the Innocence and 10 years later. Henley mellowed by marriage and family, in parts both intimate and vicious. One of the great US songwriters.
20. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd. If I ever lose my mental health, I hope it's like this. A giant of a record.
21. How Dare You? - 10cc. An embarassment of British pop riches - to know it is to love it. Should be owned by everyone. I hope the US members here are familiar with it, probably not.
22. Alive in America - Steeley Dan. Live recording from the comeback trail. Sublime, they've lost nothing. AT knows what I mean.
23. Sunburst Finish - Be Bop Deluxe. Brilliant, unlikely that you've heard it unless you're a UK pop/rock fan of about my age. Great songwriting and guitar playing both by Yorkshireman Bill Nelson.
Don't let the pompousity of my descriptions turn you off from discovering these 20 great albums.
My list of 20 great songs is to come.

Give me a day or two and I'll post my choices here. I've been preoccupied and feeling a bit guilty, but also relieved. I hope others can see my passion for trying to help keep this place vital. Oh BTW, I like most all of your choices Adey. I may even include some on my list (besides the obvious Kate selections ) I will comment on them as well tommorrow.

Great selections AT. I see you've included nearly the entire back catalogue of Steeley Dan. My wife would be very proud of you - also 3rd World Man, possibly her fave. Great version on Live in America.
Kate Bush, The Lick Inside? I'm sure that would be very nice..

In no particular order, here are my 20 great albums:
1. Crime of the Century - Supetramo
14. Made in Japan - Deep Purple. To these ears, the greatest ever (live) rock recording. Blackmore/Lord/Paice are incredible here, demonstrating amazing improvisational prowess. Gillan & Glover are also on top form.
17. Tapestry - Carole King. An American national treasure, great songs and performances by a fabulous writer.

But of course! These are the ones I concur with most Adey. Bowie, Elton John and The Who, although extremly talented, never really made my boat float. As for the others, your pomposity withstanding , I will investigate.
