Moving stranger Does it really matter As long as you're not afraid to feel? Touch me, hold me How my open arms ache! Try to fall for me
How I'm moved How you move me With your beauty's potency You give me life Please don't let me go You crush the lily in my soul
Moving liquid Yes, you are just as water You flow around all that comes in your way Don't think it over It always takes you over And sets your spirit dancing
How I'm moved How you move me With your beauty's potency You give me life Please don't let me go You crush the lily in my soul

This is a very appropriate thread to reach a deeper understanding of the 'art' of Kate Bush. Her work is as much about movement and visual expression as it is about sound. Would someone care to elaborate about how 'moving' is so inter-twined in Kate's presentations?

Does any one want to comment on how the analogy of whales and water relate to this title?

Scott Whale watching on the Puget Sound is one of the memories that have made me happiest in life. I come from a seaside town in the UK and only once in the 20 or so years that I've lived here have I seen any dolphins. Once I saw a pod of around 50 or so very close to the shore - magic. I managed to get a small inflatable 'speed' boat onto the Sound with a guide who had sonar and he picked up a pod and cut the engines. It was a beautifully blue and still day on the water and we all stayed very, very still and quiet. About five minutes or so after cutting the engines, there was a sppshhhhhhffffffffff!! as the Orcas surfaced about 30 yards from the boat. Most on board were Brits and some moved to tears by the sheer emotion and beauty. Kate's song goes perfectly with it but the best of all was the total silence and just the sound of them moving around us gentle giants that they are.

Lily or Lily of Valley - Light, Purity, Perfection, Mercy and Majesty. In Greco-Roman mythology this flower was sacred to Hera and Artemis. In Byzantium and early France, it was a royal emblem (the fleur-de-lys is sometimes considered a stylized Lilly). Primarily the Lilly has Christian associations, usually attached to the Virgin Mary where it signifies chastity.
The lily is a Catholic symbol of chastity and purity because of its spotless whiteness. The whiteness and beauty of the lily is a symbol of Our Lady's purity. A Christian legend told that Virgin Mary chose Joseph because she saw him holding a lily in his hands. A white lily refers to purity of heart, virginity, majesty.
The lily of the valley is the flower of feast-time because of the whiteness of its flowers and the sweetness of its scent, a meaning based on Solomon's Canticle of Canticles (2:1): "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys." The lily of the valley means the return of happiness, purity, and humility.
-----
The two alternate traditions concerning Cain’s parentage [Samael/Eve and Lillith/Adam], both involve the Luciferian Nephilim bloodline. Also of interest is the fact that the lily is known to have taken its name from Lillith, and the heraldic device emblematic of this bloodline is the fleur-de-lys (widely accepted as symbolic of the lily). Could not this symbol, viewed within this context, in fact be the Flower of Lillith?

Whales are some of the largest creatures on the planet. They are also graceful and loving. What does it mean if you dream about whales?
For most people, dreaming about whales is a pleasant experience. These huge water dwelling mammals may be symbolic of the connection that exists between the unconscious and conscious mind. They may represent the dreamer's level of awareness, perceptiveness, and intuition. Some think that they represent our emotional power or are messengers from the spiritual realms. If the ocean waters were turbulent, and the whale in your dream was unpredictable or on the attack, consider the emotional environment in your everyday life. Under such unpleasant dream circumstances, these large animals may represent overwhelming emotional, psychological issues, or a business project that is too enormous to handle.
Whales are in general very gentle and caring for their group. A mother whale will tenderly care for her child. The whales could be emphasizing for you how important family and those bonds are to you. If the whales are in distress, it could point out that you need to strengthen your own family bonds.
A whale may symbolize your mother, or femininity in general. The mother metaphor would indicate a dominant mother or a mother attachment. Being swallowed by a whale would symbolize a descent into the unconscious, where you may find repressed emotions from previous experiences in life. But it is also where you will find your true self (not dominated by the egocentric self), which may include the creative and/or spiritual. As a feminine aspect it may be addressing your intuitive self, or perceptions in general. Do you usually trust your self, or do you give way to outside influences that ultimately bring about crisis in your life?
Whales have been hunted for centuries for the many useful items they have on them - the whale blubber, whale oil and so on. If this is the scenario in your dream, could it be that your own value is being beaten upon? Are people taking advantage of you, pushing you to work hard even though it is using up all of your energy? It might be time to call a time-out and find some me-time!

'Interesting analogies Tannis. I might only add that the fluid grace of the whale belies its enormous size...A fitting tribute to Lyndsey Kemp I think. If she wished to express her gratitude to him for his huge impact on her expression through movement, then the whale becomes an effective device to convey deft beauty and power on a grand scale. Themes of communication through visual stimuli (dance, videos etc) and universally accessible cues from animal language (e,g,, the whale song or avian references etc) have been a part of Kate's progression of understanding the connectivity of humans with nature and with each other. IMHO

Yes, very interesting connections. The whalesong reminds me of the blackbird song on Aerial now. And "you crush the lily in my soul" has always been one of my favorite lyrics of Kate's.

[purple]I might only add that the fluid grace of the whale belies its enormous size...A fitting tribute to Lyndsey Kemp I think. If she wished to express her gratitude to him for his huge impact on her expression through movement, then the whale becomes an effective device to convey deft beauty and power on a grand scale...[/purple] Yes, I agree! ... KB's cetacean desire to flow and blow... Introduce Kemp's mute form, teachings, and impact... And the whale metaphor is perfect! Agree too! ... There seems to be a lot of the totemic in KB's work... [purple] Whale Totems[/purple] Whales are the world's largest mammals! These warm-blooded creatures have blubber to insulate and store food they need. Whale bones are soft and porous, enabling them to store food in the form of oil. The softness of their bones enables them to grow to an enormous size and still float in the water. Underwater, whales don't have good eye sight, but they have excellent hearing and use a technique called "echo location" to communicate with other whales. By using their powerful tail flukes to steer and propel them, they are able to utilize their fins to twist and turn about in the water. They understand the sacred power of water and realize the importance of taking time out to breathe. Their sensitivity to sound and movement connects them to the core energy of primal life. Whale reintroduces us to our creative and intuitive energies to show us a talent we've forgotten about or haven't been aware existed. People with this totem are able to understand the ancient language of "energy vibrations," and are able to distinguish where others are truly coming from. Whale asks us to recall our past and listen to its stories so we can creatively heal old wounds. - www.animaltotem.com/whale.htmlJudy Collins sings the haunting hunting Whale Song, "Farewell To Tarwathie" ( Whales and Nightingales, 1970). Collins sings this Scottish folk song to the accompaniment of humpback whales. YouTube: Judy Collins Farewell to Tarwathie www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-VyZBsBkj4
