OK folks, here is the definitive list of those we defined as Important Recording Artists. I have respected people's classifications, even when I haven't agreed with them, so a few artists appear more than once. Some names weren't classified by type, so I did those myself - my apologies if I've put someone in a category you might not agree with. Some artists could legitimately be in several categories ie Fleetwood Mac could have been RnB inc Blues, pre Buckingham/Nicks and Pop or Rock after they came aboard.
This is how it breaks down:

It was my intention to note where an artist had been nominated more than once, but it became apparent that some contributors were adding names rather than submitting definitive lists. Just to illustrate this, I was amused to note than only 3 people actually mentioned Kate Bush..
Well there you go. Suggestions please for what, if anything, we do with the list!
Thanks to everyone who took part.

Where's the love? ;D I have XXX'd out the few that I respectfully disagree with. There were 5 or 6 that I knew nothing of, but did not cast a disenting vote in those cases. I only disagree with a few characterizations. e.g. Devo as "Pop", but no big deals. BTW good job adey, Thanks!
I added one (in the Limelight - 'Ravel') only after hearing Martha Agerich playing one of his songs. (see "Moments of Pleasure" board) Thanks Al!

I agree, lets have some comments.
I think it's everyone's project really - contributors put in a lot of work to define their own lists.

Are we allowed to suggest recategorisations? If so, mine would be: Ani DiFranco >> Folk/Country John Cage >> Classical (20th Century Art Music) Tori Amos >> Rock, because she isn't pop in the conventional sense

Thank you for the list of artists, Adey! I'd also like to suggest to put two artists into another category and no category at all respectively... Cat Stevens --> Folk/Rock - Singer/Songwriter Pop only describes his very early music, I think. He's got such beautiful, thought-provoking lyrics and wonderful compositions - and I love the way he plays his guitar! Leonard Cohen --> UncategorizedI feel there is just no musical category Leonard fits in with. That's one of the things I love about him! He has never followed a trend, and his style, regarding his voice, his lyrics and his music, has always been very individual and unique. Maybe his music is nearest to the Chanson (like Georges Moustaki's music, for example). BTW I like your winking Mozart! Love, Susanne

Susanne, thank you for your close attention.
As I said, I would classify Artists who hadn't been. I really did struggle with Cohen and so have to agree with you.
I don't think there's much point in re-categorising artists now. Unless folks want to take this any further, I think the thread may now be concluded. Let me know if you or anyone thinks it should be taken any further.
Well done for identifying Mozart, winking or otherwise!

Maybe this thread could be made into a sticky. It'd be a shame for it to get buried. Hmm, just need Lori to see this now.

Adey, is it possible to narrow it down to 100 and then have some honorable mentions? The 'Stones' out and "Revolting Cocks" in just doesn't seem quite right. However, important need not mean entirely popular, right? Influence, talent, and innovation seem to be the main criteria.
