I agree with 99 percent of everyone's choices so far. Especially since Al, used many of mine. There are a bunch of worthy ones still left out: Carl Perkins Elvis The Clash U-2 DeVo Pink Floyd Yes Moody Blues King Crimson Jane's Addiction Alice in Chains. Ozzie We need to make some tough choices and/or increase the list to 50 rock/pop and 50 'other' as Al suggested.

Metallica Led Zeppelin Iron Maiden Deep Purple (Original) Black Sabbath. Important artists in terms of the HM genre. Of these, only Deep Purple is unique (Ozzie was already mentioned) the others are clones, but I guess Metallica and Zep are important from a success standpoint, based on their ability to change and be somewhat innovative. ( Yardbirds and Kinks laid the groundwork) But, Iron Maiden, AC DC Def Lepard and all the other heavy-speed-death metal or hairbands are not all that important in the grand scheme of the musical landscape. At least to me. You may like Prong or Tool (pretty cool video's) but they just don't rate as 'important' These do tho': Bill Hailey and the Comets Woodie Guthrie 'Stones Motorhead Black Flag Culture Club REM Radiohead Greenday Smashing Pumpkins Talking Heads

I was going to include Smashing Pumpkins myself but wasn't too sure. I'm Listening to Prong at this moment.

Hi all, thanks for these posts.
Al/Sven/anyone else.
Don't be constrained by the numbers, if you've got more IMPORTANT artists - get them down. I just ask that they come in single posts sized amounts, makes it easier for me to get them all down. A few posts rather than one big one is certainly perferrable.
I won't be around much this week. My wife is in a performance of Rattigan's " Seperate Tables " and I'm helping out backstage. Its a week long run.
Catch up with you all towards the end of the week.

Janis Joplin? Fleetwood Mac? Dare I say The Cure? Brian Eno? Tom Waits? As an aside, I'd like to list those seriously underground bands that deserve a shout out, like The Residents Throbbing Gristle Tuxedomoon The Velvet Underground Red Crayola Oh who am I forgetting? Hey, I kinda like Chicago! Does that make me lame? Robert Lamm is a FANTASTIC songwriter, at least I think so. Shrug. Hmm, I don't know about Joan Jett. I see no merit in her music at all. But I love that the Kinks got mentioned straight away, and not even by me!

Ooh, now I remember who I forgot!
Frank Zappa. He's at least worth mentioning in my underground list. And maybe--
Kraftwerk ?

I'd like to add in:
Ani DiFranco-
She opened the door for "independent" artists - setting up her own record company (www.righteousbabe.com) which allowed her full control over her music, and the ability to decide where the money she made would go - i.e. towards helping the rebuilding (that's not the word I'm looking for, but it's escaping me at the minute) of her hometown: Buffalo, NY.
Tori Amos-
I know Kate fans are quite opposed to her, but her technical ability is almost unquestionable, and we are starting to see a lot of artists listing her amongst their influences, including Evanesence and Alanis Morissette.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers-
What can I say? ;D

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- What can I say? ;D Well, you could start by saying that they recently sold 20 million dollars in concert tickets, are grammy winners, are a top 100 all time in record sales, and had the number one album as of 1/7/04. They are important because they have helped mould the shape of alternative music for over 20 years. They are a unique and powerful force, blending several influences with tight musicianship and original lyrics. I happen to like a very wide range of music. I do like Tori despite the fact that Kate paved the way for her and still outshines her in comparison. It's fine not to like some of the choices, but this is nonetheless an exercise in recognizing all the influences that have been important.
