If Kate were a man, do you think she'd have the same appeal as she does as a woman?
She has, whether she wanted to or not, used a certain amount of sex appeal to catch people's attention, especially in the early years of her career. Would she have sold as many records without this? Obviously it would not have affected the true fans of her music, but for those who have just bought one album, would they have been won over if she were male?

If Kate where a man, then I'd be gay! ;D Seriously, The art comes from deep within this person, beyond gender. So I think if she were a man she would enjoy at least the same level of success, although perhaps the material would be different. You've got to say though Sto, she does make a great woman.

Agreed about the material being different - I remember reading an article where the journalist says that if "The Infant Kiss" had been sung by a man about a little girl (even though that isn't what the song was written about...), people may have been disgraced (this comment did sound slightly sexist though, LOL!) And yes, I'm very glad she's a woman, I can't really imagine a male Kate...!

People often hesitate to acknowledge the importance of the politics of sex. It is a huge influence. I won't quote, but check out the lyrics to "Symphony in Blue". This is a glimpse of Kate's attitude about sexuality.
To address your question is very difficult. The dynamic of Kate's appeal is that she is unique. To imagine her as anything other that who she is is almost impossible for me. Her appeal to both sexes may be that she projects a view that we all can relate to either vicariously, or in fantasy. She is human first, but as I've said before, she is the paradigm of the ideal women.

If Kate were a man, do you think she'd have the same appeal as she does as a woman? I haven't read through this properley yet because I'm dashing off to bed now, but from the first sentence I just had to say to that, that Kate primarily got my attention with her eerie high pitched voice and theatrical dance and facial expressions. If it was a guy doing that I'd dread to think what I'd be calling him. I think it would be quite an embarrassment though, put it that way.

This one's easy. She'd be part Peter Gabriel, part Bryan Ferry, and a little David Bowie and Elton John (wince ) I'm not much of a Elton John fan, but I see the influence. I don't think you can interpret her songs from a male point of view (i.e. Infant Kiss or Babooshka) Her songs are written from her own innately Kate sexuality and femininity. But... if you use your imagination and rebuild her career from the beginning as a male... you'd get something like I suggest. Anyone agree?

Oh, and by the way, aside from Elton John... I find the others all EXTEMELY appealing!
