I got this idea from Marktime's thread on 'Directing Kate' We have also discussed some 'covers' that Ms.Bush has already done e.g. the week VIII 'Moments of Pleasure' board. I was thinking of other songs that Kate could creatively cover. Please agree or disagree with my list of ten, or contribute your own.
1) 'Blackbird' by the 'Beatles' * 2) 'Dear Prudence' also the 'Beatles' * 3) 'Tainted Love' Soft Cell ** 4) 'Time after Time' Cindy Lauper * 5) 'Third World Man' Steely Dan *** 6) 'Haitian Divorce' also Steely Dan * 7) 'The Way it is' Bruce Hornsby. ** 8) 'Instinctive Traveler' Dissidenten. ** 9) 'Rooftops of Vienna' Joe Zawinul ** 10)'Third Stone' Jimi Hendrix **
*= 'Ska' or 'Reggae' renditions **= Synthesizers and piano opportunities ***=Chance for great guitar and keyboard work.
This is just for fun. But if your listening Kate, I've got more free ideas.

Al, it is amazing that your psychic talent appears to lie just below the surface. Are you aware of your divining powers, or do you just put it down to the ability to imagine well? Whilst I don`t know all the songs you listed, the ones I do know, particularly "Blackbird", I can see Kate performing. I do prefer Kate`s original creations, yet my list of covers would include: 1) "True Love Ways" Buddy Holly 2) "Sympathy for the Devil" The Rolling Stones (slighly different lyrics) 3) The tune from Helena Rigby by The Beatles with her own lyrics about making a unique connection 4) "Star Man" (Not sure if this is the title) David Bowie 5) Finally a duet with Sting "The Greatest Love of all" including an added verse about our beautiful planet and how we can enhance our connection to it. This IS just for fun, yet like any dream it might just happen!

MT, I like your list as well (did you mean Elenanor Rigby?) (from those I recognize... especially SFTD which I almost included on my list [your treatment of it makes it more interesting]).
She probably would only cover a song unless it moved her on a personal level. But no harm in speculating. Mixing a few covers in her future work could, as I've said before, increase her fanbase.

Yes! ELENANOR Rigby! I don`t own a copy of this track, I just remember it being such a good tune. I can imagine Kate changing the lyrics making it a song of hope rather than hopelessness. Kate would love to acheive that. With the Rolling Stones number, instead of being the Devil, I imagine her singng TO the Devil with a genuine desire to reach him. Wishful thinking or a real power to transform. We decide for ourselves.

Yeah, when I said 'creatively cover' I was refering to Kate putting her thumbprint on these songs---be it samples or rewrites. I'm going to throw a few more against the wall to see if they'll stick. (Indulge me Kate ): * 'Waterfall' - by Jimi Hendrix (also covered by Meshell Ndgeocello aka 'May This be Love' from her 'Bitter' CD) * 'One World' 'Ska' duet w/Sting? * 'Speechless' Cibbo Matto ** * 'True Companion' Mark Cohn' (keyboard samples + synth. elaborations) * 'End of the Innocence' Don Henly (keyboard samples or adaptations) This would also blend with samples from 'The Way it is' by Bruce Hornsby (1st list) * Finally a meld of "Black Market' (Weather Report) 'Under My Thumb' (Stones..vibes samples only) with "Razor Boy' (Steely Dan) [This one's been buzzing in my head for years as an instrumental]. Kate's s recording facility and connections could make this a masterpiece of eclectic art. ** This would make a great video. Imagine a female drum and trombone corps on iceskates ala 'Sat in Your Lap'. [the 'Cibbo Matto' song] I'll keep going til someone says stop or shut the F up! .

My last post may have been over the top, but if you have the chance to listen to any of the music mentioned, I bet you'll enjoy it.

I could've sworn I'd replied to this post before, hehe. Ah well... I've never heard of ALL of those songs, but I do think that Kate'd do an amazing job if she covered 'Cindi Laupers' 'Time After Time' like you said. Wow!!! I can just hear it

Technically, you have responded to a similar post, Lori; this one has just been elaborated. Oh, yeah an upbeat reggae cover of the Beatles "Come Together" would be good.! huh?

ALTRUEST,
I would not be upset if MS. KATE BUSH were to cover a song by KING CRIMSONTM or YESTM.

MX, I would agree that either of your suggestions would be very fertile ground for Ms. Bush to plow. How would you feel about Kate putting lyrics to the Rick Wakeman (of 'Yes' fame) instrumental solo endeavor "The Six Wives of Henry the VIII." Given her propensity to be drawn to historical and morose subject matter (e.g. 'Wuthering Heights' 'Pull out the Pin' etc.), by my estimation, would be a very viable production. It would finally give meaning to the original concept of the album. Samples could be extensively used. Duets with the samples would be explosive. You could also involve Bill Bruford, or perhaps David Paton (with ties to both artists) in participating in this effort. Thanks for the inspiration. Furthermore, her acumen with the Fairlight and other synthesizers on such a project would pay homage to another pioneer of electronic keyboards. The marketing would be easy for such a DVD/ Music Video. Period costumes-historical references-moral conflict-voracious appetites-gore.....it would righteously RAWK! I would most assuredly buy it. Even if this is my idea; it's a d**n fine one!

I do think that Kate'd do an amazing job if she covered 'Cindi Laupers' 'Time After Time' like you said. Wow!!! I can just hear it I agree Lori, although as much as I truly love this song; it is the only one by Ms. Lauper that I can abide. Notwithstanding the one about 'wanking'
