Thank you everyone for voting! ;D This week is the final round of the "Hounds of Love" round before "The Ninth Wave" round, so please private message me your vote by clicking on my username to the left and then clicking the option to send me a private message. In the message, write which one of the following two songs you want to win: Running Up That Hill Cloudbusting You don't have to post in this message itself, but feel free to comment on both or either of these 2 songs (without giving away which you voted for!) if you please! This will be tough for most of us. I bet we might be surprised by the winner. Of course "RUTH" is the front runner. The message the lyrics and especially the hauntingly innovative synth riffs. However, with all the covers and airplay, Cloudbusting may give it a run.
The increasing excitement in Cloudbusting is so dramatic. Great use of Cello and other strings. The message here is more personal too. "RUTH"'s theme is philosophical, this one is more private and poignant.

We may indeed be surprised with the result; after all, "Moving" beat "Wuthering Heights".
To add to your point about "Cloudbusting" Al', I also see it as Kate being a little rebellious, partcularly the way in which she sings "I can't hide you from the government". Granted that the song's based on a true story, but I think it may be something she felt the urge to get out her system.

A song I feel so strongly about, that it came to me at one of the most crucial times in my life. I haven't even been able to discuss it yet at Deeper Understanding. It soothed my soul and quieted mind, and I thought I was perhaps reading to much into it. "Maybe it is just a break-up song?" I asked myself, "and not what I feel at all." Then I discovered some of Kate's words about it.... she never lets me down. ;D "Is there so much hate for the one's we love? Tell me, we both matter, don't we? You, it's you and me. It's you and me won't be unhappy..." And, please for Cloudbusting, check out the post as Deeper Understanding for more info. Just posted it there a few days ago. I think Kate says it best.

I was dreading this, even though I knew that it would come down to these 2 songs.
RUTH is ultimate, full on, in your face KB. Haunting lyrics, superb minimalist musical arrangement, tortured vocal and suprisingly commercial. How I love this song even though it unsettles me everytime I hear it. I once woke up to it playing on the radio - it filtered in to my half sleeping/waking state and left me feeling out of sorts all day.
Cloudbusting too is wonderful. The driving cello riff, the oh so memorable words, the slow Bolero like build and development and the big payoff with the massed unison vocals that descends into something completely unexpected.
OK Sto' my vote goes for....

Sto' sorry, did you get my vote? I've not sent an instant message before and I don't really understand what the IM screen is telling me. If I don't hear from you, I'll assume you got it. Regards,

I got it Adey! Thanks for voting! Zan, I didn't realise that "RUTH" was so personal to you. I look forward to your 'Deeper Understanding' post about it, if/when it ever happens!

Zan, I didn't realise that "RUTH" was so personal to you. I look forward to your 'Deeper Understanding' post about it, if/when it ever happens! Maybe, Sto! I think there's so much about our anxieties in relationships present her music that could be helpful in understanding ourselves. Of course, sometimes a "cigar is just a cigar" but sometimes we all know what else it's a metaphor for...?
