As a college student in the 80's ('83-'88), I remember hearing Cloudbusting and Running Up That Hill and being really fascinated with the sound of them. I didn't really know who produced those songs, but I was intrigued. My friends and I were into music, and I remember hearing from one of my friends that he really liked Kate Bush. I knew practically nothing of her save for her collaberation with Peter Gabriel on his "So" album. That particular friend was a bit off his rocker, so I didn't really give his endorsement much weight. He did show me an album cover of hers, and it looked interesting stylistically. It was the cover for "Never For Ever", now that I take a look at it again. So, I filed that away for a while.
I didn't really get around to buying any KB until the early 90's, when I got a hold of "The Sensual World". I have to admit the title and the album cover was what initially caught my attention, but the presence of "This Woman's Work" was what clinched the deal. Of course, I heard it in the "She's Having a Baby" movie and liked it.
I don't know if it's a case of love at first sight, but TSW is still probably my favorite of her albums. I've got an EP called Aspects of a Sensual World, too, and it's got the two fantastic songs, "Be Kind to My Mistakes" and "I'm Still Waiting".
Beyond that, I've got "The Red Shoes", "The Whole Story", and "Hounds of Love" (probably my second favorite).
They are all amazing records. I'm enthralled with her depth of emotion and the levels of texture that she weaves into each piece. I really don't know what most of the songs are about, but you definitely get a vivid emotional picture from them. For example, "You're the One" is such a gut-wrenching tune. You can't help but feel the pain of break-up, and the "I really don't want to part ways, but I guess we must" agony.
I need to start making some purchases of her older stuff. I've got "Kite" and "Them Heavy People", and they are fun. Any recommendations would be helpful.
Well, that's about it. KB is such a part of my life now. I listen to her every day. I can't get tired of it, and it doesn't age.
