Nick Drake tribute albumVedder, Grohl to pay tribute to Nick Drake LONDON (Billboard) – Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Norah Jones are among the acts confirmed for a tribute album to influential English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, who died in 1974. The set will be released by musician Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, and Johnson also will also perform on the album. The announcement was made during the MidemNet music industry conference in Cannes, France, by David Schulhof, whose company, EverGreen Copyrights, controls the rights to Drake's work. The recording process was filmed for release as part of a DVD package. It will also include the late actor Heath Ledger's version of the song "Black Eyed Dog," filmed in late 2007 for a multimedia installation about Drake but never officially released. Drake was little known when he died of a drug overdose at age 26. But his influence has mushroomed in the ensuing decades, and his profile received an astronomical boost when his song "Pink Moon" was used in a Volkswagen ad in 2000. December: There are rumours that Kate could be appearing on a tribute album to the late English singer-songwriter Nick Drake released in 1998. An album of this kind was rumoured to feature Kate a few years ago but never surfaced. The album may be produced by Joe Boyd who was Nick's friend and producer and who has also worked with Kate when she collaborated with the Trio Bulgarka. Mark Lanegan, the singer with The Screaming Trees is said to have recorded Clothes Of Sand for this record. Brian Kennedy, Paul Buchanan (the singer with The Blue Nile) and Paul Weller are also rumoured to be involved. So far most of this information stems from an interview given by Kate St. John (ex-Dream Academy) who is said to be co-producing the tribute. A biography of Nick (who died at the age of 27 in 1974) by Patrick Humphries has just been published, the anthology Way To Blue has been reissued and a recent Irish Times article says that "there are advanced plans for a tribute album and a documentary".www.katebushnews.com/leaving.htmDel has told myspace friends: "Del Palmer is in the studio today with you-know-who"So maybe "you-know-who" is working on a track to feature on the Nick Drake tribute album? ...

I saw this on the BBC website today but as all acts mentioned are American I'm not convinced Kate would be involved. It would be interesting if she was invited though.

Saw it written and I saw it say Pink moon is on its way And none of you stand so tall Pink Moon gonna get ye all And it's a pink moon ~ Nick Drake, Pink MoonFull Moon Names and Their Meanings Full Moon names date back to Native Americans. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Here is the Farmers Almanac's list of the full Moon names. . . APRIL: Full Pink Moon. This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn. Other Names: Frog Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Seed Moon, Spring Moon, Wild Goose Moon, Deep Water Moon, Leaf Spread Moon, Big Wind Moon.www.mindspring.com/~stardancer/moonnames.htmlPink Moon is the third and final album by British musician Nick Drake. It was recorded at midnight in 2 two-hour sessions, over two days in October 1971, featuring only Nick Drake's vocals and guitar, as well as some piano later overdubbed by Drake on the title track. The bleak songs of Pink Moon are short, and the eleven-track album lasts only 28 minutes. Drake had expressed dissatisfaction with the sound of Bryter Layter, and believed that the string, brass and saxophone arrangements had resulted in a sound that was "too full, too elaborate". Drake appears unaccompanied on Pink Moon, save for a single piano overdub on the title track...."none of you stands so tall/ pink moon gonna get you all" means that nature is so powerfully beautiful that even the strongest and proudest human being will be moved by its glories, a fact that is proven that even a mighty ruler can be moved to awe by a sunrise or the ocean or the stars...The song Pink Moon has been taken to reference death, cosmic catastrophe, the Apocalypse, truth and disorder, renewal, resurrection, love, and/or the redeeming possibilities of nature...Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? When the sixth seal was opened, John saw awesome cosmic disturbances. The prophet Joel had spoken these words in God's name: "I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (2:30-31). This was typical prophetic language to describe God's judgment, the end of the world's kingdoms and the inauguration of the kingdom of God (Haggai 2:6; Isaiah 13:10; 34:4; Jeremiah 4:23-28). In apocalyptic literature the "end of the world" was described by cosmic disturbances of various kinds (1 Enoch 80:4ff; Sibylline Oracles 3:801-802; 4 Ezra 5:4-5; Assumption of Moses 10.5). The end of the world, of course, is to be understood within the context of the new beginning and the new creation that God brings about. The wrath of God isn't spiteful hate or personal vindictiveness. It is God's holy response to unrepented sin that is the cause of the misery and suffering humans bring upon themselves. The fearful people of earth living during this time of judgment—from kings to slaves—ask a legitimate question: "Who can stand?" (Revelation 6:17). The question is actually a quote from Malachi 3:2: "Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears?" Four angels stand at the four corners of the earth (Revelation 7:1). Later, angels stand around the throne (7:11). A great multitude of the saved stands before the throne of God (7:9). Thus, those with God—the angelic hosts and the saved—are the only ones who can "stand" or remain safe when God's wrath strikes. www.wcg.org/lit/bible/Rev/sixseals.htmNick Drake Pink Moon www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE0ODrmaiFE

Nick Drake Black Eyed Dogwww.youtube.com/watch?v=pJSC25Ue8GgLEDGER'S DRAKE COVER TO BE RELEASED Call it a tribute within a tribute: A forthcoming album paying homage to the late singer Nick Drake will include a notorious cover song recorded by Heath Ledger just before his own death. Ledger recorded a version of Drake's Black Eyed Dog in 2007 for a multimedia art installation - and he was reportedly working on a biopic of the cult British folk-rocker. But the actor died of an accidental drug overdose early in 2008 and the recording was never released. "I was obsessed with his story and his music and I pursued it for a while and still have hopes to kind of tell his story one day," Ledger said in 2007. Ledger died during production of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Canadian co-production that is slated for release this year. Drake, too, died of a drug overdose, in 1974, at the age of 26. He developed a cult following after his death and is best known for songs such as Pink Moon and Things Behind the Sun.www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090121.HEATH21/TPStory/Entertainment

Well, Heath Ledger was an Australian, if that helps --Paul-- So he was. Well, I don't know much biography-wise about him but I think the phrase "not going a bundle" on him springs to mind. I thought his Black eyed dog film interpretation to be pretty revolting. Ok, it's not a upbeat song but the obsession with linking Nick to death endlessly is both insensitive and unimaginative. Nick's music is hugely inspiring and beautiful. He wrote and sang what can only be described as 'exquisitely'. I hate to think what HL's intended biography of Nick would have been like. More of the same I should imagine. Sorry to rant.

Nick Drake : Time Has Told Mewww.youtube.com/watch?v=zn17p7NR5H0Album: 1968 Nick Drake Session Artist: Elton John Genre: Rock/Pop The title looks like a joke, or a misprint: Elton John sings at a session that had anything to do with Nick Drake? Surely you jest, sir! But this session actually did take place, though in July 1970, not 1968, as the title indicates. And it's not John and Drake performing together: John does sing much of the material, but Drake is not present in any way. The full story is that producer Joe Boyd organized these tracks as a publisher's demo to circulate the compositions of Drake, John & Beverley Martyn, Mike Heron, and Ed Carter. John actually only covers four Drake tunes, and John's versions are so different that you might not even recognize the songs without looking at the titles. John strips the music of its odd melancholia; the results sound like, well, early Elton John records. So, despite the good fidelity, it's a curiosity for both Drake and John fans, nothing more. John also offers covers of other British folk songwriters on the disc, and some of the tracks feature Linda Thompson (then known as Linda Peters) rather than John on vocals. The documentation on this particular bootleg isn't perfect, incidentally; it's missing one of the 11 songs that circulate from this session, though not one of the ones that Drake wrote. As a bonus, the CD also contains 14 songs grouped together under the heading "Best of 1968 DJM Demos," from the time just before John issued his first solo album. The sound quality on these studio recordings isn't great (though it's all right), but these are interesting glimpses of the singer/songwriter as his style formed, even if the writing in particular is more derivative at this point than it would be within a couple of years. It's strongly influenced by late-'60s Beatlesque pop and, to a lesser extent, early singer/songwriters, the Bee Gees, and psychedelia. The material's more a promising kernel than it is the work of a distinctive talent, although the best of it is modestly enjoyable on its own terms.www.mp3.com/albums/193946/summary.htmlElton John - Saturday Sun www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0GqTeu7t-I&feature=related

"Incorrect statement" Publisher EverGreen has now made clear that a DVD package won't include Heath Ledger's video. EverGreen's co-CEO Richard W Perna expressed "regret" over the making of the "incorrect" statement about the inclusion of Ledger's video. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or embarrassment caused to Mr Ledger's estate, Nick Drake's estate, Brushfire Records, or anyone else involved with the tribute album," said Perna in a statement.www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/dave-grohl-eddie-vedder-set-for-nick-drake-tribute-194170
