I've looked all over the site and haven't found anything about Jane Siberry. I think she's fantastic....in fact, I think that she, along with Kate Bush and Tori Amos, form a trio of female musical artists that are head and shoulders above anyone else I've heard. She's a little different from the other two in that I'd classify her as an artist before I would as a musician. I think Kate and Tori are musicians first. Just come at it from a little different angle.
Have you heard of her? Does anybody else like her?
I don't know the exact web address but her site is called Sheeba, and she recently changed her name to Issa.....not Issa Siberry.....just ISSA.
And you can download her stuff from the site, and pay as much as you want for it. She's very unique.

I've looked all over the site and haven't found anything about Jane Siberry. Kevan mentioned her just recently I believe in his favorite videos. I can remember dropping her name on occasion, but not necessarily on a dedicated thread. I would say her greatest talent is writing. Her contributions and collaborations are extensive. I especially liked her work with Emmy Lou Harris.

Have you just recently heard her? I'm wondering about how you first became aware of her music. ha yes I had heard about the name change though I had heard that it was Issa Night. Ah well, sorry Issa... yr still Jane to me.

I don't remember how I first heard of her. I think a mutual Kate fan clued me into her stuff back in 1987, and I bought The Walking which I thought was great. Now I have her first six albums 1. Jane Siberry (folky, and verrrrry funny!!) 2. No Borders Here (a little more like 80's pop, but a few brilliant tunes....Mimi On the Beach and Dancing Lessons) 3. The Speckless Sky (She starts harnessing her genius on this one. More progressive.) 4. The Walking (Briliant and surprising from start to finish.) 5. Bound By the Beauty (Has a country flavor and is more song oriented, but is great, especially in her ability to capture the full potential of the songs.) 6. When I Was A Boy (Very daring, and more cutting edge. Brian Eno was involved in this project.)
I still like Kate more, and Tori is fabulous......but right now I'm in a Jane mood. I can sort of understand where Kate is coming from in her approach to her music, I just can't understand how she can make it so good. With Jane, she's so intelligent and quirky, that when you combine it with Kate's refusal to adhere to any preconceived notions of what a song SHOULD sound like, you get an almost stream-of-conciousness experience which is an absolute trip. Yet when she focuses on making a great song, in the standard sense, she shows a different brilliance which colours her other choices in a wonderful way.

Ahh you've known of her far longer than I have - which is just a few months. I have her last three albums; Bound by the Beauty was the first album I heard and I very much liked it - enough for me to check out The Walking and When I Was a Boy. Hey that's a nice description.

The following are excerpts from Wikipedia.
Issa (pronounced eeee-sah) (formerly known as Jane Siberry, born October 12, 1955 in Toronto, Ontario), is a Canadian singer-songwriter. In Canada, she is most famous for her early 1980s new wave hits such as "Mimi on the Beach", "I Muse Aloud" and "One More Colour". Internationally, she is best known for her 1993 album When I Was a Boy.
In 2005, Siberry pioneered a self-determined pricing policy through her website on which the purchaser is given the choices of: standard price (about $0.99 USD/track), pay now - self-priced, pay later - self-priced, or "a gift from Jane". Her music is now only available on mp3 format in order to eliminate plastic waste.
Early in 2006, she closed her Sheeba office, then sold and gave away nearly all of her possessions -- including her home and instruments. She presently retains one travelling guitar, but none of the other instruments featured on her albums and in her concerts.
On June 3, 2006, somewhere in northwestern Europe, Siberry changed her name to Issa. She revealed her new name to the public on June 24, 2006. She has also indicated, however, that her older music will remain available for sale under the name Jane Siberry; only her new material will be released as Issa.

I had one of her albums years ago. I loved the song "Waitress". But never thought about her again.
