I haven't seen this topic anywhere here... a thread in which to present song lyrics.
"When Ya Get Drafted" by Dead Kennedys
Are you believing the morning papers? War is coming back in style There's generals here, advisors there And Russians nibbling everywhere The chessboard's filling up with red We make more profits when we blow off their heads
Economy is looking bad Let's start another war when ya get drafted Fan the fires of racist hatred We want total war when ya get drafted
Drooling fingers Panic buttons Playing with missiles like they're toys There's easy money, easy jobs Especially when you build the bombs That blow big cities off the map Just guess who profits when we build 'em back up Yeah, what Big Business wants Big Business gets
It wants a war when ya get drafted Trilateral Commission goonies laugh and scheme for more when ya get drafted Call the Army! Call the Navy! Stocked with kids from slums when ya get drafted If you can't afford a slick attorney We might make you a spy
Forget your demonstrations Kids today sit on their ass when ya get drafted Just a six-pack And you're happy We're prepared For when ya get drafted

these lyrics are probably my favorite of all time, simply amazing
Jonni Mitchell - Song For Sharon
I went to Staten Island, Sharon To buy myself a mandolin And I saw the long white dress of love On a storefront mannequin Big boat chuggin' back with a belly full of cars... All for something lacy Some girl's going to see that dress And crave that day like crazy
Little Indian kids on a bridge up in Canada They can balance and they can climb Like their fathers before them They'll walk the girders of the Manhattan skyline Shine your light on me Miss Liberty Because as soon as this ferry boat docks I'm headed to the church To play Bingo Fleece me with the gamblers' flocks
I can keep my cool at poker But I'm a fool when love's at stake Because I can't conceal emotion What I'm feeling's always written on my face There's a gypsy down on Bleecker Street I went in to see her as a kind of joke And she lit a candle for my love luck And eighteen bucks went up in smoke
Sharon, I left my man At a North Dakota junction And I came out to the "Big Apple" here To face the dream's malfunction Love's a repetitious danger You'd think I'd be accustomed to Well, I do accept the changes At least better than I used to do
A woman I knew just drowned herself The well was deep and muddy She was just shaking off futility Or punishing somebody My friends were calling up all day yesterday All emotions and abstractions It seems we all live so close to that line And so far from satisfaction
Dora says, "Have children!" Mama and Betsy say-"Find yourself a charity." Help the needy and the crippled or put some time into Ecology." Well, there's a wide wide world of noble causes And lovely landscapes to discover But all I really want right now Is...find another lover
When we were kids in Maidstone, Sharon I went to every wedding in that little town To see the tears and the kisses And the pretty lady in the white lace wedding gown And walking home on the railroad tracks Or swinging on the playground swing Love stimulated my illusions More than anything
And when I went skating after Golden Reggie You know it was white lace I was chasing Chasing dreams Mama's nylons underneath my cowgirl jeans He showed me first you get the kisses And then you get the tears But the ceremony of the bells and lace Still veils this reckless fool here
Now there are 29 skaters on Wolmann rink Circling in singles and in pairs In this vigorous anonymity A blank face at the window stares and stares and stares and stares And the power of reason And the flowers of deep feeling Seem to serve me Only to deceive me
Sharon you've got a husband And a family and a farm I've got the apple of temptation And a diamond snake around my arm But you still have your music And I've still got my eyes on the land and the sky You sing for your friends and your family I'll walk green pastures by and by

I haven't heard the Joni song as all I have are Court & Spark and Blue, but it looks good.
Here's one from someone I don't listen to all that much anymore. It's another wordy one...
Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
They're selling postcards of the hanging They're painting the passports brown The beauty parlor is filled with sailors The circus is in town Here comes the blind commissioner They've got him in a trance One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker The other is in his pants And the riot squad they're restless They need somewhere to go As Lady and I look out tonight From Desolation Row
Cinderella, she seems so easy "It takes one to know one," she smiles And puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style And in comes Romeo, he's moaning "You Belong to Me I Believe" And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend You better leave" And the only sound that's left After the ambulances go Is Cinderella sweeping up On Desolation Row
Now the moon is almost hidden The stars are beginning to hide The fortunetelling lady Has even taken all her things inside All except for Cain and Abel And the hunchback of Notre Dame Everybody is making love Or else expecting rain And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing He's getting ready for the show He's going to the carnival tonight On Desolation Row
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window For her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic She wears an iron vest Her profession's her religion Her sin is her lifelessness And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah's great rainbow She spends her time peeking Into Desolation Row
Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood With his memories in a trunk Passed this way an hour ago With his friend, a jealous monk He looked so immaculately frightful As he bummed a cigarette Then he went off sniffing drainpipes And reciting the alphabet Now you would not think to look at him But he was famous long ago For playing the electric violin On Desolation Row
Dr. Filth, he keeps his world Inside of a leather cup But all his sexless patients They're trying to blow it up Now his nurse, some local loser She's in charge of the cyanide hole And she also keeps the cards that read "Have Mercy on His Soul" They all play on penny whistles You can hear them blow If you lean your head out far enough From Desolation Row
Across the street they've nailed the curtains They're getting ready for the feast The Phantom of the Opera A perfect image of a priest They're spoonfeeding Casanova To get him to feel more assured Then they'll kill him with self-confidence After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls "Get Outa Here If You Don't Know Casanova is just being punished for going To Desolation Row"
Now at midnight all the agents And the superhuman crew Come out and round up everyone That knows more than they do Then they bring them to the factory Where the heart-attack machine Is strapped across their shoulders And then the kerosene Is brought down from the castles By insurance men who go Check to see that nobody is escaping To Desolation Row
Praise be to Nero's Neptune The Titanic sails at dawn And everybody's shouting "Which Side Are You On?" And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot Fighting in the captain's tower While calypso singers laugh at them And fishermen hold flowers Between the windows of the sea Where lovely mermaids flow And nobody has to think too much About Desolation Row
Yes, I received your letter yesterday (About the time the door knob broke) When you asked how I was doing Was that some kind of joke? All these people that you mention Yes, I know them, they're quite lame I had to rearrange their faces And give them all another name Right now I can't read too good Don't send me no more letters no Not unless you mail them From Desolation Row

I haven't heard the Joni song as all I have are Court & Spark and Blue, but it looks good. if you like Joni then you MUST have Hejira, where the song i posted above is from this is a new favorite of mine: Dresden Dolls - DelilahThere's no end to the love you can give When you change your point of view to underfoot Very good: you may be flat but you're breathing And there's no doubt He's at home in his room Probably watching porn of you from the fall It's last call and you're the last one leaving And you thought you could change the world By opening your legs Well it isn't very hard Try kicking them instead And you thought you could change his mind By changing your perfume To the kind his mother wore Oh God, Delilah, why? I never met a more impossible girl In this same bar where you slammed down your hand And said, "Amanda, i'm in love" No you're not You're just a sucker for the ones who use you And it doesn't matter what I say or do The stupid bastard's gonna have his way with you You're an unrescuable schizo Or else you're on the rag 'Cause if you take him back I'm gonna lose my nerve I never met a more impossible girl At four o'clock he got off and you called up "I'm down at Denny's on Route One And you won't guess what he's done" Is that a fact, Delilah? Larry Tap let you in through the back And use his calling card again for a quick hand of gin You are impossible, Delilah The princess of denial And after seven years in advertising you are none the wiser You're an unrescuable schizo Or else you're on the rag 'Cause if you take him back I'm gonna lose my nerve He's gonna beat you like a pillow You schizos never learn And if you take him home You'll get what you deserve I never met a more impossible girl So don't cry, Delilah You're still alive, Delilah You need a ride, Delilah? Let's see how fast this thing can go

You may like this site: www.automaticjoy.com/ for it has a whole bunch of live Dresden Dolls tracks. EDIT: oh yeah, I had thought about checking youtube for the joni song in question but didn't do it. I will.

Well anyway, I thought I'd manually go through all the Joni Mitchell entries since sometimes the uploader doesn't label the selection very well. haha am I ever glad I did so! The very last entry is a song called "Spirit of the Forest" which must be one of the worst songs I've ever heard. It is a well-meaning sing-along in the mold of "We are the World" and so on except that it is so bad that I first took it to be a parody of a song. Well anyway, what makes it so interesting is that Kate is in it. Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxkbNpN8XM8

Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxkbNpN8XM8 OMG! what a terrible song, where's the "worst song ever" thread when we need him? well at least kate on it OK, now back to business, here are some great lyrics: Leonard Cohen - Hallelujahi heard there was a secret chord that david played and it pleased the lord but you don't really care for music, do you well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth the minor fall and the major lift the baffled king composing hallelujah hallelujah... well your faith was strong but you needed proof you saw her bathing on the roof her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you she tied you to her kitchen chair she broke your throne and she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the hallelujah hallelujah... baby i've been here before i've seen this room and i've walked this floor i used to live alone before i knew you i've seen your flag on the marble arch but love is not a victory march it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah hallelujah... well there was a time when you let me know what's really going on below but now you never show that to me do you but remember when i moved in you and the holy dove was moving too and every breath we drew was hallelujah well, maybe there's a god above but all i've ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you it's not a cry that you hear at night it's not somebody who's seen the light it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah hallelujah...

Regina Spektor - Chemo Limo
I had a dream Crispy crispy Benjamin Franklin came over Baby-sat all four of my kids
Then in my dream I told the doctor off He said if you don't want to do it then you don't have to do it He said the truth is You'll be okay, anyway
Then in my dream Crispy crispy Benjamin Franklin and the doctor Went and had a talk with my boss
Something about insurance policies They kept the door closed at all times I couldnt hear or see
When they came out they said You'll be okay, anyway And I smiled cause I'd known it all along.
No thank you no thank you no thank you no thank you I don't have to pay for this shit I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo and on any given day I'd rather ride a limousine
No thank you no thank you no thank you no thank you I ain't about to to die like this I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo And besides this shit is making me tired it's making me tired it's making me tired You know I plan to retire some day, And I'm gonna go out in style go out in style This shit it's making me tired it's making me tired it's making me tired I'm-a gonna go out in style go out in style
When I woke up My kids were being quiet I knew it was a dream right away I called the limousine company
Then I got dressed I dressed the kids as well The limousine pulled in And we piled in
The doctor he asked which way we were headed I said, Sir, let's just go west and he listened obediently, Sophie only wants to listen to radio BBC Michael sat on my knees and whispered to me All about the meanies Jacqueline was being such a big girl with her cup of tea looking out of the window And Barbara She looks just like my mom Oh my god, Barbara She looks so much like my mom
No thank you no thank you no thank you no thank you I don't have to pay for this shit I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo and on any given day I'd rather ride a limousine
No thank you no thank you no thank you no thank you I ain't about to die like this I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo And besides this shit is making me tired it's making me tired it'smaking me die You know I plan to retire some day, and I'm-a gonna go out in style go out in style This shit it's making me tired it's making me tired it's making me tired I'm-a gonna go out in style go out in style
Style Style Style? Style. Style..? Style Style..?? Style.
I had a dream Crispy crispy Benjamin Franklin came over and Baby-sat all four of my kids
I had a dream Crispy crispy Benjamin Franklin came over and Baby-sat all four of my kids
Sophie only want to tune us into radio BBC Michael sat on my knees and whispered to me All about the meanie Jacqueline was being such a big girl with her cup of tea looking out of the window And Barbara She looks just like my mom Oh my god, Barbara She looks so much like my mom

Regina Spektor - Chemo Limo This is one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums... and really has something of an extra-special meaning to me as I once was singing/humming it while waiting for a MRI which thankfully turned out to be OK. Still, it was a memorable experience for me. OK well, letsee... some lyrics... Love Affair by Regina Spektor There was a love affair in this building The kind of love affair, which every respectable building must keep as a legend Slowly festering through an innocent by the way or have you heard He was perfect except for the fact that he was an engineer and mothers prefer doctors and law-yers... Yet despite this imperfection he was clean looking and respectable looking And you'll never find a mother who doesn't appreciate a natural man So he grew healthy aloe Vera plants by the window Healthy teeth in his mouth Healthy hair on his head He grew healthy wavy brown hair on his head The kind that babies always go for with sticky little fingers

Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy JrHis father was a drinker And his mother cried in bed Folding John Wayne's T-shirts When the swingset hit his head The neighbors they adored him For his humor and his conversation Look underneath the house there Find the few living things Rotting fast in their sleep of the dead Twenty-seven people, even more They were boys with their cars, summer jobs Oh my God Are you one of them? He dressed up like a clown for them With his face paint white and red And on his best behavior In a dark room on the bed he kissed them all He'd kill ten thousand people With a sleight of his hand Running far, running fast to the dead He took off all their clothes for them He put a cloth on their lips Quiet hands, quiet kiss On the mouth And in my best behavior I am really just like him Look beneath the floorboards For the secrets I have hid for those who don't know who John Wayne Gacy Jr is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_Gacy

Love Love Love by The Mountain Goats
King Saul fell on his sword when it all went wrong, and Joseph's brothers sold him down the river for a song, and Sonny Liston rubbed some tiger balm into his glove. some things you do for money and some you do for love love love.
Raskolnikov felt sick but he couldn't say why when he saw his face reflected in his victim's twinkling eye. some things you'll do for money and some you'll do for fun, but the things you do for love are going to come back to you one by one.
love love is going to lead you by the hand into a white and soundless place. now we see things as in a mirror dimly. then we shall see each other face to face.
and way out in seattle young Kurt Cobain snuck out to the greenhouse, put a bullet in his brain. snakes in the grass beneath our feet, rain in the clouds above, some moments last forever, but some flare up with love love love.

I'll check out the song, ^ EDIT- I did. These guys have some really good lyrics. The sample of "Dilaudid" was enjoyable. (That didn't sound right ) I find that when listening to samples of an album, tracks 4 and 5 are usually the best. 'Why is that -or has anyone else noticed?

I'll check out the song, ^ EDIT- I did. These guys have some really good lyrics. Yeah, they do - though really it's similar to The Divine Comedy in that while there is a band name it's pretty much just one guy writing (and often in Goats' case) performing the songs. You might remember him from the Nine Black Poppies video on Youtube - you commented, for whatever strange reason(s), that he appeared to be blind. If you're interested sometime in modern singer/songwriter types you might also like a band called Bright Eyes - ehh... it's pretty much just one guy. The Sunset Tree, the album that Dilaudid and Love Love Love iare on, was the first Goats album I heard - they've been around since the early 90s... a band I wish I had heard sooner. Ayway, here's another Goats song I like and which goes to show how it's always good to have hope. It's not all that common for a song to manage to be both depressing and humorous. No Children I hope that our few remaining friends Give up on trying to save us I hope we come up with a failsafe plot To piss off the dumb few that forgave us I hope the fences we mended Fall down beneath their own weight And I hope we hang on past the last exit I hope it's already too late And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here Someday burns down And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away And I never come back to this town Again in my life I hope I lie And tell everyone you were a good wife And I hope you die I hope we both die I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow I hope it bleeds all day long Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises We're pretty sure they're all wrong I hope it stays dark forever I hope the worst isn't over And I hope you blink before I do Yeah I hope I never get sober And I hope when you think of me years down the line You can't find one good thing to say And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out You'd stay the hell out of my way I am drowning There is no sign of land You are coming down with me Hand in unlovable hand And I hope you die I hope we both die I haven't noticed this but I'll pay some attention to it. Does this hold true for you in Kate's albums?
