Self explainatory -
Double Albums that really should have been singles - having insufficient good material to justify themselves.
Discuss, disagree or add your own..
"The White Album" - The Beatles

"The White Album" - The BeatlesAgreed. Then you wind up with songs like "Piggies."Both hubby and I had a few to add, for the moment. Just goes to show that you can have too much of a good thing... The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - GenesisOver 8 minutes in "The Colony of the Slippermen" ?! Tusk - Fleetwood MacIt's really "Not That Funny"! This is what happens when your band becomes a circus. Out Of The Blue - E.L.O.You are, after all, E.L.O. The Wall - Pink FloydYou're losing me. Use Your Illusion - Guns & RosesNo excuse. and of course... Aerial - Kate BushO.K. already, go up on the roof!! ;D LOL

"Julia", "Blackbird" and "Dear Prudence" I think are wonderful songs. I will admit that you could squeeze it down to a single, but I really enjoy some of the obscure tracks like "Bugalow Bill" and "Ob-la-de' etc And further, there were various cultural and political references including 'piggies' (Police) etc. So to each there own.....And Zan, I'm not taking the bait on "Aerial". ;D Let me give my considerations some thought on my list though....

I like Tusk! I think it was a ballsy effort after the pressure of Rumours' success. I think it might even be my favorite F Mac album. There is enough song writing talent in that band to warrant a double for sure. Besides which, Xan, "How to be Invisible" is on it! I like the White album too. My nominees---- Double Bummer--Bongwater. I mean, my God, it says so right in the title. Even if you took the best of this and made it one disc, it would still be their worst album. Preservation Act 2--The Kinks. This shouldn't even have been a single album. It makes me embarrassed to admit I'm a Kinks fan and is the only album of their's I have not replaced on cd. Can we just pretend this sonic disaster doesn't exist? God in 3 Persons--The Residents. They lost me at this one. Buh bye! Honestly, I'm even asking myself--was this in fact a double album? It sure seemed to go on forever. I haven't listened to it in 15 years but am pretty sure it was a double. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me--The Cure I'm sitting on the fence about this one. I used to think it should have been one lp, and when it was new I remember a music lover co-worker agreeing with me. However, we totally disagreed on what tracks should have stayed. That really got me thinking... Almost all of this album has grown on me over the years.

I am of the belief there is no such thing as an obscure Beatles track. I think The White Album needed to be a double. Yeah I'm starting to rethink my own nominee Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. It really is one of the Cure's best albums. Just thought I'd throw it in there because I used to think it should be a single.

Hey, I think we lost the point here! ;D No mud-slinging going on. I mentioned some of my favorite bands and those albums include some great songs. But, I believe the albums would have been stronger if edited to a single. Isn't that the idea, Adey? And Sheila, I love Tusk, but I do start going past it. And, along with some of my faves, it also includes some duds IMO. I wish I could add something to your's, but I'm really not that familiar.

But, I believe the albums would have been stronger if edited to a single. Isn't that the idea, Adey? Indeed..I love half of the White Album - Martha, While My Guitar, Dear Prudence, Blackbird, etc. But Savoy Truffle, no9 etc, my remote ff button gets a real work out.. Agree about Tusk and especially about The Wall. Even though I'm a Floyd fan, I actually think The Wall would have made a fine EP, rather than even just a single album.. Lamb Lies Down - yes that too. The story goes that Gabriel ran out of inspiration with Rael, and that Tony Banks saved the day with virtually one album side of his (admittedly brilliant) synth noodling. Actually we could be reading from the same hymn sheet ~ Use Your Illusion - man how quickly did GnR crash & burn..

Maybe he should have condensed his double-meaning into a single concept. ;D

LOL Them heavy people. Here: Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage A humorous narrative story and parody, but nonetheless easily done on one album. OutKast's Speakerboxx/ The Love Below and although technically two separate albums - one by Big Boi and one by A2K - there was only enough decent material for one album. They should have collaborated and fused them together. Edgar Winter's Second Winter Side four was BLANK Geez finish it or start a new one. Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland Good experimental stuff but only half of it memorable. Then there are scores of double albums that should not've been made at all.

Ok, I'm aware that Electric Ladyland was originally released as a double LP, but I've only ever heard it as a single album via the CD release. So technically, it has been both a double album AND a single album. Also, Pink Floyds' The Wall could, with some clever editing and mixing, be made to fit onto one CD without sacrificing too much of it.

Al is correct - " ----------" is the Beatles best album.
oh letsee... oh lawdy I have the all-time ultimate egg - Bob Dylan "Self Portrait." ehm actually though this is an example of a double album that should have been a single 3 minute track.
