michael wrote, elsewhere:
Yeah, I know what you mean. I probably do too. I admire anyone who does something experimental or progressive these days. Fiona's first album is still her best, though And The Pawn has some good moments. I guess the reason I mentioned her was I came across her the same way as Kate: She was on a TV show, a concert series; I had never heard of her and she was different. She's also crazy, which I admire. Still, she's not in Kate's league, but who is? I still Like Gabriels work with Genesis, esp. "Lamb Lies Down...". and early solo: Biko, Security. Looking at your list, I thought to myself: "He must have really good radio where he's at. Some interesting sounding stuff that we just don't hear of. It's all top 40 one way or another in San Diego. 1 real jazz staion (PBS); nothing that would play Kate. I should be moving back to LA soon though. what do you think of Morphine (may they RIP)? Michael
I just saw a video today for O Sailor - very nice. Wow, you must have seen my brief Morphine discussion with Al - right? They're not a band that's usually just brought up out of the blue. Well anyway, I like Morphine a lot and have three of their albums: Good, Cure for Pain, and The Night. Yeah, I'd say that they are certainly done for - I've heard nothing about the two surviving members trying to reform the group. Actually, they are currently in a band now though I can't recall its name. I haven't heard it. So you like Morphine?
Re: good radio
hahahahahahahahaha ;D
No, not really. I hardly ever listen to the radio. My car radio died years ago and that was the place I most often listened to it. It's through online searches that I find non-mainstream artists. The site that tracks my plays for example has many "similar artists" and related search features. So, when I find one that I like I can easily cascade the search to many other artists.
What did Kate perform on SNL?
Do you like/have you heard Nina Simone?
EDIT: oh and there are many experimental/progressive artists around - it's just that they are for the most part not to be found on the radio.

If you don't mind me jumping in; Kate performed "Them Heavy People" and "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" on SNL. This was my first exposure to Kate. It was a watershed moment. Monty Python's Eric Idle was host and had selected her for his musical guest. Paul Schaeffer, band leader for David Letterman and author of "Raining Men" : was the piano accompanist on the later song. He later commented that her writing and unorthodox style was the most unsettling performance that he'd ever witnessed (or to that affect) ;D I loved it!

From what I've been able to dig up in the vaults at Homeground, the light UK TV news programme on which I first saw Kate perform/be interviewed, was just a few days before her SNL slot. Her class, originality and sheer otherworldliness were immediately apparent. WH had only just been released here, but her live performance was of Them Heavy People only. My memory may be failing, but I don't recall a rendition of TMWTCIHE on that show. Needless to say, I rushed out the very next day to buy Wuthering Heights c/w Kite. TKI followed very soon after and for me the rest is history. Never before (or since) had I seen or heard an artist that had the sledgehammer effect on me that that first TV appearance had. And here we are nearly 30yrs later..

Yep, Al's right. Hi Al, I'm Michael, new here, but not to Kate. I remember that I liked SNL, but I wasn't a religous watcher. I might have watched because Eric Idle was host or it was just random. Whatever, I had never heard of Kate and was absolutely stunned. I remember she did this pantomime of rolling a ball underhand during Them Heavy People and then making eye masks with her fingers during the Man With a Child in His Eyes and singing: "I wonder if he loves me, or is just taking a trip on my love for him;" this beautiful, young creature, both woman and girl and completely magical. My girlfriend was the manager of my band (I was profressional musician then) and I had been playing her my favorite stuff, but she had never seen me blown away by anybody like that. Actually got jealous. Anyway, got English imports of Kick Inside and a live album with killer versions of THP and James and the Cold Gun, which I have since lost. But she's been my muse ever since. and no, Kevan, I did not see the conversation about Morphine with Al, I just thought you might like them because . . .they were original too. good to talk to enlightened people; not many here. How do you add smiles and found avatar site. How do I add image. Thanks Michael

How do you add smiles and found avatar site. How do I add image. Thanks Michael OK, I'm not sure which site you found to store your photos, so I'll mention the one that I use - photobucket. How to upload your photo to photobucket: - select "browse" - open the folder where the photo is stored - click on the photo you want uploaded - select "open" as this will add the photo location to the "image" box at photobucket - click "submit" At this point the photo will be stored at the site, and assuming everything has proceeded smoothly you will see the picture towards the bottom of the screen. -highlight the picture's URL box and then at the top menu select "edit" and then "copy." OK, now you're ready to come back here and (heh I need to look to see what you do here - be right back.) - click on your name - click on "Modify Profile" located near the top of the page. - Find the "Avatar URL" box and paste in your picture's URL. There, that should do it. Hey, what instrument(s)/style of music did/do you play?

How do you add smiles and found avatar site. How do I add image. Thanks Michael Our friend has given you good technical advice Michael. Also worth doing is quoting another post with smilies/images etc attached - it will come up in the message post and you can see for yourself how it has been constructed and what bits of code you need. These are found above the message box - look for "Add Smilies" and experiment with "Add Tags" to make your post do various things. You can preview what you've done without actually sending a post to the Board. Just jump out of it when you're done without pressing the send button..

OK. Thanks. What's "under ice" mean? Avatar will probably change, this was test run, although I'm a big Miyazaki fan. Anyway, I was quite the drummer (I still play). My band did clubs with Van Halen and Quiet Riot (w/Randy Rhodes) and others. I play and write on keyboards; some guitar. I've spent the last couple years taking fiction writing classes and writing (short stories and 1 1/2 novels). Wrote "rock opera" that goes w/ novel I'm doing re-write on. That's one reason I waited so long to get new PC. I'm in a constant war with Word's grammer and syntax but I refuse to turn the option off. Still, I didn't want any newer versions and basically I just used it as processor. Finally had to get new one that's faster than light and so decided to join a few groups; that's why I don't know a lot about what I'm doing. I played jazz in college and most of my original bands were progressive hard rock; like lots of obscure stuff, not because their obscure but because they're not mainstream and don't get played. I often wonder if I hadn't seen Kate on SNL, would I have come across her? It's a trip. Everyone I play her for loves her, but I've never come across someone who asked me first. It would have been a much duller world if she hadn't been in it. Thanks for all of your help. Michael

Always nice to find another musician in our ranks Michael. I'll spare you the inevitable drummer jokes as I'm sure you've heard them all..
Looks like you were keeping some heavyweight company there for a while. I must admit to being a little envious of your background. Randy Rhodes was a great loss - such a stupid and unnecessary death.
Pleased to see you're keeping up with your artistic endeavours. Sir!

Welcome to the forum Michael. Another musician is always appreciated here. Coincidentally, I also play (played) drums. Not professionally, mind you; but I still have a nice set and play for enjoyment only now. And, as you read, had a similar experience with the Kate Bush SNL epiphany. So - 'looks as though you may have an affinity for what we do here, Keep posting.

Thanks guys. Really happy I found this spot. It gets frustrating not being around people who share an appreciation for artists like Kate. San Diego is pretty mainstream and conservative. That's why I stopped playing professionally. You starve down here. Anyway, Al, I'm gonna post on your "Unique Voices" thread. Have some input. Take care all.
