I will concur with these The Sensual World The Dreaming - Kate Bush Hounds of Love - Kate bush U2 - Joshua Tree End of the Innocence - Don Henley Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads and these: Closer - Joy Division Tracy Chapman Laurie Anderson But here are 10 not previously nominated: Gaucho - Steely Dan (Kate's favorite of their's BTW*) So - Peter Gabriel Domino Theory - Weather Report Sporting Life - Weather Report Nightfly - Donald Fagan The Pretender's The Way it Is - Bruce Hornsby Word of Mouth - Jaco Pastorius Motion Poet - Peter Erskine (plays on Kate's new album*) Ghost in the Machine - Police * Kate attributes the Steely Dan song "Peg" (from their album "Aja") as a direct influence on "Why Should I Love You" She also requested their music be played during sets of hosted radio gigs. Erskine has backed Steely Dan as well as Kate. God the 80's generally sucked music-wise though.

God the 80's generally sucked music-wise though. I am forced to agree ~ With the tail end of the punk rock revolution, it could be argued that it started badly and then went downhill. However, for that mini-generation of people who became aware of pop music in the 80s, the argument would no doubt be that it was a great time for music. We always need perspective on this I guess.. I suppose (for me) the key feature of the early to mid 80s at least, was in the development of Electronica - affordable synths appeared in the hands of people like the original Human League, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, Thompson Twins, Yazoo, Heaven 17 etc and for a while, music took an unexpected left turn. Even the dominance of the guitar was seriously threatened.. I'd argue that song-writing also took a back seat for much of that decade. Possibly because of the impact of the new wave, and the way in which it stung and then swept Record Companies before it, I always think of the late 80s as the time that such companies decided to try and control the popular music agenda. By backing off from the idea of nurturing talent and lengthy careers and in creating a whole raft of one hit wonders with the sole intention of creating and then fleecing the pre-adolescent youth markets. Some great and promising talents disappeared forever at this time. Thank God Kate was properly handled by an old school company operating mid 70s style..

I will respond here later (have to work now) I do want to stress the "generally" part of my quote. With the advent of synth's in the 80's I had already been indoctrinated by the pioneers like Zawinul and Wakeman. The new material paled in comparison. Overall I just meant by my statement that I actually preferred the late 60's and up to the late 80's. There was more being said more creatively. (to me anyway)

what i really hate about the 8O's are the annoying drum machines that ruined lot of songs that were basicaly good. i had a hard time getting into kate because of those drum machines, i still think that if she used real drums in some songs they would sound better

Gee I had to pick 20 also. Glad to see that some of you share some of these. I have split it up into first half and second half of the decade. I made sure that it was stuff I enjoyed and owned during the decade, not stuff I bought afterwards. I have always believed that 1982 was a great year for music plus I was in the 9th grade that year. It was a blast! Funny how the SECOND HALF is more male than female vocalists.
FIRST HALF Pretenders-Pretenders (80) Super Trouper-ABBA (80) Beauty and The Beat-Go Go's (81) Dare-Human League (81) Spring Session M-Missing Persons (82) I Love Rock 'N Roll-Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (82) Upstairs At Eric's-Yaz (82) All Four One-The Motels (82) She's So Unusual-Cyndi Lauper (83) Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This-Eurythmics (83) Colour By Numbers-Culture Club (83)
SECOND HALF Hounds Of Love-Kate Bush (85) I discovered Kate with this album and now I own them all! Voices Carry-'til tuesday (85) (Believe me the hit is the one of the weakest songs on album) Black Celebration-Depeche Mode (86) Louder Than Bombs-The Smiths (87) Actually-Pet Shop Boys (87) The Innocents-Erasure (88) Doolittle-Pixies (89) Technique-New Order (89) The Sensual World-Kate Bush (89)
...and honorable mention to: New Gold Dream-Simple Minds (82) A great CD I bought much after its release.
