I'm surprised that a forum dedicated to the appreciation of musical talent can overlook the tragic loss of Luther Vandross yesterday.
I was not particularly a fan, but I was touched by his gift and know several who adored his velvet voice. He was working back from a debilitating stroke in 2003, and died suddenly yesterday at only 54.
The R&B world will never be the same. Although many of us may not be fans of his music, we should not be so narrow as to only acknowledge the talents of a few.

(about an hour ago) Cause of death is not being released yet. But with his extreme fluctuations in weight as well as the history of stroke would make a cardio-vascular failure likely. I admired his talent, while not specifically a fan. Nonetheless, it is sad when such great talent stops.

What a shock. 54 is still so young. Not too long ago, my parents celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and had their vows renewed. Here and Now was their special song together. That actually almost brings a tear to my eye.

Much respect for the man, He will be missed. I wasn't the biggest fan, but caught him quite a bit listening to the "Soul top 25 chart" throughout the 80's So long Luther

What with the Wimbledon fortnight and the run up to and actual Live 8 performances, this news seemed to escape both our popular press and TV news. Add to that the fact that my big lounge TV has broken down and that I've been watching a small portable without the benefit of teletext, and you can see that the passing of Luther Vandross, passed me by completely..
Like the rest of you guys it seems, I was not really a fan. Indeed, at the risk of a cyber-stoning, I have to add that with the exception of Marvin Gaye I'm not into soul music at all. I've heard Luther of course and admired his vocal control, restraint and his honeyed tones. More Sam Cooke perhaps than Gaye, but we are always reduced by the passing of significant talent..
