I've indulged one of my secret vices tonight..
Went to see Chicagoans Styx playing at the Symphony Hall in my home city. Their first visit to the UK in 24 years, since the Paradise Theatre tour in fact. Once I got my head around watching them play in a venue purpose built for orchestral & solo music, I really enjoyed them - even if it was a nostalgia fest. That said they did play material from their 2 most recent recordings and it was very good. But of course it was the classics that we'd gone to hear, and they delivered with style, energy, enthusiam and panache. Their line up has remained relatively stable since reforming in the mid 90s, though Dennis de Young has been absent for some years now. Tommy Shaw & James Young were great however, and De Young's replacement, who played some brilliant classical piano and has a very similar voice, was a treat. Even original bassist Chuck Panozzi - who apparently does not enjoy good health - played a few numbers and the climax of the show.
An evening mainly for 40 something melodic rock fans, who were out in force, but also a surprising number of younger music fans who've obviously grown up with Dad's Crystal Ball, Corner Stone & Paradise Theatre albums. I've waited a long time to see them - great night.
Kate, if Styx can still do it..
All together now:
"I'm sailing away.."
