When Kate B. appeared, her music was not comparable to anything else and difficult to label. In stead, afterwards, her music was used as a musical category in itself. She opened the door for many eccentric female singers, like for instance, Tory Amos or Björk. But there are probably other musicians that were inspired by Kate without losing their own identity....

I remember Kate having a very distinct sound and nothing has surpassed her since she came onto the scene in that sense. But, if you listen to some of Laura Nyro's stuff you will see who influenced Kate. In turn Kate went on to influence many others but no-one has ever captured an ounce of her spirit or understanding and expression of a celtic soul or spiritual past. Take a listen to Captain for Dark Mornings - it's Kate through and through. Some of my friends have heard me playing it in the car and think it's Kate. By the way Laura Nyro is remembered on Radio 2 and 9pm GMT. You guys in the USA or outside can toon in through the web. www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/documentaries/lauranyro.shtmlLaura (my namesake) you are much missed - God rest her soul.

Laura Nyro went way too soon..
I'm exploring her work for the first time at the moment and am very excited by it.
As for Kate's influence on other artists, well it's all around us isn't it?
Never mind the eight original albums (I don't expect more), this is her true legacy and one which marks her out as one those exceptional artists that appears occasionally. And if you think that art is in anyway important, one whose talent and message leaves the world altered..

In have enjoyed the music of Laura Nyro for years. Granted, much of it has been performed by other artist's - a testament to her versatilty and skill as a writer; but that should not desuade anyone from hearing the original artist's performances. Just recently, however, I did purchase a tribute album of her material. It was quite good. I especially liked Jill Sobule's treatment of ''Stoned Soul Picnic''

I've loaned "The Kick Inside" to a few Tori fans over the last couple of years; they tend to go into shock for a while...and end up loving Kate, too.
blessed be.

Bjork is the only one I can think of. (in a good sense) For some reason she seems more Kate-like to me than Tori, regardless as to how hard Tori tries.
