About this time a year ago I came across the music of Rufus Wainwright.
I'd always been a fan of Kate and Anna McGarrigle (his mum and aunty) and after getting his debut CD I very quickly feel in love with young Rufus too.
To my mind I feel Rufus is the closest there is to a male version of Kate.
Like Kate, Rufus is a true eccentric and his songs have the same truth and honesty about them.
Again, like Kate, a lot of people don't understand where Rufus is coming from but those who 'like' him 'love' him, if you know what I mean.
Have a listen to 'Poses' or 'Want One'. He's fabulous.
I even got to meet him earlier this year while he was touring. The concert was amazing and Rufus was a really friendly, down to earth bloke.

Pauli
The first two messages from you and my most recent additions to my collection.
Rufus is God right now in this house. I have Poses playing regularly on my car CD and saw the recent docu about his more recent life and a little history on BBC three weeks back.
I'm in love with Rufus for sure.......one of the best things to come onto the music scene in Britain for years.

Yeah - I think Rufus is terriffic!
Most of my friends love him too.
For some reason the people I know who don't like him don't like his voice which I find strange.
There is word that he might be touring Australia again in September which would be great, I suspect he won't be back till next year now, but you never know.

Pauli Im assuming you are in Oz? I personally am kicking myself as Rufus was literally in the next town along to me last Autumn and I couldnt find anyone keen enough to see the show with me. I should have gone alone.............
Do you know the story of Grey Gardens (Poses). I've got so caught up in it I've ordered the DVD and there is a cult following of the movie. Here is a review - you will recognising the opening line from the song!!!
"It's very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present," says Little Edie Beale early on in Grey Gardens, "You know what I mean?" In a way, the intent of this documentary is to help us understand what she means. You see, Edie, 56 years old at the time the film was made, lives with her mother Edith in a mansion in East Hampton, Long Island called Grey Gardens that could accurately be described as the estate that time forgot.
The house is falling apart: the walls are being torn apart, there is garbage everywhere, and raccoons, cats, and humans coexist somehow. Edith and Edie have become almost institutionalized in this place, and either don't notice what has happened to the house over many years, or they don't care. We get glimpses in photographs of the two of them in their younger years, and both were striking beauties in their own right, members of the Bouvier family--the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy.
Eccentric is an understatement to describe these two women. Neither seems to have any concept of the outside world, though both are excellent communicators, as they talk and talk and talk, often overlapping one another, and even more often talking about the past. Edith was a singer in her day, and we hear her record. Edie wanted to be a dancer, but never really tried to. She talks about all of these things she "could have" done, but wasn't interested in actually doing at the time. And yet, here the two of them are, living their lives in isolation with one another, and somehow making it work.

Grey Gardens is amazing - utterly compelling and truly fascinating - as well as being one of my favourite films (and probably my favourite doco) the song itself is one of my most loved Rufus tunes - plus I would love to hear Kate do a version as I reckon THAT would be extraordinary!!! I'm sure you'll love Grey Gardens when it arrives - let me know what you think.
Yeah, I am in Tas, Australia.
Rufus is well worth going to see even if you are alone - he's wonderful in concert - I saw him with the family as I'm a big Kate and Anna McGarrigle fan - but next time he tours I expect I'll see him solo.
Martha Wainwright (his little sister) has her debut CD out this month - I got an advance copy from the record company - it's very good - well worth a listen (she's a Kate fan too!!!)

I'm having a small problem here Pauli inasmuch as all DVDs for Grey Gardens are American versions and no UK stock every made. I do have a PC DVD player so maybe that won't be a problem but I doubt it would play on my older DVD player (as it has no multi-regional setting). It really is a longing to see this film. I will let you know how it goes............did you know there is a Yahoo Group dedicated to Grey Gardens. A whole load of folks mad on the movie. RA

I managed to get a copy on video on ebay - might well be worth a look...Their video format is different also but these days most video players play both formats.
Good luck - let me know how you go...

Wow - I'm sooooooooooo envious.
You must post all about it.
As mentioned I saw the family show and whilst I would not swap having seen that for anything I do look forward to seeing his solo show one day soo.
I'm sure you will have a FABULOUS time. He's very funny and normally will come out and meet people afterwards - so make sure you hang around afterwards. He's happy to sign things and have his pic taken.
