I've just heard on the news, Robbie's 'Angels' won best song. Still don't know whether Kate was there though. Have to wait till tomorrow to see

Aw . I'm quite dissapointed. "Angels" is a very good song but it certainly doesn't deserves the status. I actually hope that kate will win and will make a big comeback. guess it's not going to happen

I heard it on the radio earlier. Wasn't surprised, I expected Angels to win.. very mainstream, got the whole family vote.
I'll keep half an eye on it tomorrow though in case Kate is at the party..

Of course you are right Cathy.. Contemporary pop music is a disposable commodity, a fashion statement I guess. Here today and gone tomorrow. It IS the youngsters who vote in these polls, and you're right to observe that they have little interest in something that was popular before they became aware of pop music.
But they'll mature in time, and look for something that's more challenging - that's when they'll discover the REAL giants in pop history. They'll look at old posters of yesterday's big thing on their walls, remember the adulation that they threw at nobodies who just got fat, and be embarassed beyond words..

Dissapointed in Brit Awards results, as usual. Angels Best Song in last 25 years-come on. Franz Ferdinand qre Ok but imo bland and dull, just because they have cracked the US they are given all these awards. They are slowly turning into the Grammies, just awarding artists who sell well or who the judges are mates with.

I agree it was more fashion over talent - those awards only reflect votes from people who buy mainsteam music papers generally and it's been that way since the beginning.
Eminem over Brian Wilson - huh - I don't think so.
Of course, it's all a matter of taste and age - only time will tell. But I'd put money on Kate's music still being played when Robbie's is going for sale at your local car boot sale along with all the other 'take that' music in a few years from now. Harsh? I dunno.
BUT I have to say that I thought the Scissor Sisters were fantastic and Joss Stone has the most beautiful voice.

I didn't take in much of it, not when I realised La Bush wasn't there.
I DID enjoy the Geldof/Boomtown Rats performance at the end though I must say. All the new stuff passed me by in a wave of mediocrity. must be getting old..

Adey, I had tended to be the same but now allow myself a little more time perhaps to listen to something newer. Having said that I find it difficult to find any 'acts' with staying power right now, so am tending to nod in agreement with you.
We get the indie bands that go all high profile for a year, win bigs awards, then fade away hardly to be seen again.
Right now we have Keane, Jamie Cullum, Franz.....ah, you know the ropes and I agree, ultimately it's dull. I still await something truely innovative a la Kate to come onto the scene.
Even Joss Stone I can't help comparing to a very young Janice Joplin but, hey, I'm old enough to remember, so maybe thats my problem.
My music collection really revolves around old artists who have proved themselves over the years to have a great talent, and I'm discovering music that was recorded years back that I simply didnt know about or just hadnt had time to listen to. Some of it is staggering.
Anyway, I'm waiting.........bring on something new - where is it?

Some of it is staggering. I can identify with that sentiment. However, as insatiable as I've become, there is just so much to be had that suits me. It is partly why I get into more jazz and world fusion stuff. The skill level and creativety is there for the discovery. Loreena McKennitt P J Harvey Dead Can Dance Cirque Du Soleil Afro Celts Bjork 12 Girls Band Bella Fleck Emmy Lou Harris The Putamayo series (of world music) 2 fairly new Steely Dan albums K D Lang (beautiful voice! great songs) Radiohead Sound Tracks Compilations Old stuff to check out: Weather Report (all of it) Joni Mitchell Steely Dan (any of it) Bob James Brecker Brothers Dave Bruebeck Ricki Lee Jones Sade Sinead O'Conner Peter Gabriel Roy Orbison Patsy Kline I'm leaving out a bunch. Some else pick up from here.
