I just wanted to recommend a few things that I believe Kate fans would enjoy... I read some older posts about Sarah, so I had to say--if you are a fan, an absolute essential is "Rarities, B-sides & Other Stuff." She has some wonderful covers on it-- "Song For A Winter's Night" by Gordon Lightfoot, "Dear God" by XTC, "Blue" by Joni Mitchell, & "Gloomy Sunday" by Billie Holiday. Also, is anyone familiar with Lisa Gerrard, formerly of Dead Can Dance? Some interesting elements are combined in their/her music: Celtic folk & middle-eastern styles. She often sings in random syllables that feel right with the music, the overall effect of which might begin to be described as ethereal (uniquely so). That last description also goes for Elizabeth Fraser (formerly of Cocteau Twins & This Mortal Coil). Some others: Ute Lemper, Dot Allison, Sinead Lohan, & Sarah Brightman (--her 3 most recent albums offer a variety of styles, though I know her operatic approach doesn't sit well with some, I can't help but love her!)

Done! Glad to see we have so much in common LC! I have loved Sarah McLachlan for years, since around Fumbling... can't seem to sell Altruest on it yet, though. Maybe you'd have more luck. Actually her version of "Song for a..." is on a Christmas collection I made and opened up an interest in Gordon Lightfoot for me. My favorite song of her's is "Elsewhere." Also, is anyone familiar with Lisa Gerrard, formerly of Dead Can Dance? Some interesting elements are combined in their/her music: Celtic folk & middle-eastern styles. She often sings in random syllables that feel right with the music, the overall effect of which might begin to be described as ethereal (uniquely so). Also done! I have the soundtracks for The Insider and Gladiator. I loved her voice so much I bought The Mirror Pool. Do you have that? I have heard some Dead Can Dance, but don't actually own any yet? Where should I start? That last description also goes for Elizabeth Fraser (formerly of Cocteau Twins & This Mortal Coil). Some others: Ute Lemper, Dot Allison, Sinead Lohan, & Sarah Brightman (--her 3 most recent albums offer a variety of styles, though I know her operatic approach doesn't sit well with some, I can't help but love her!) Only one I have here is Sarah Brightman. I love her too! You really have to give Dive and Fly a chance. Her duet with Tom Jones is incredible! But personally, I like La Luna the best. I have been a Brightman fan since the late 80's with Phantom. No one in American really knew who she was, and I was trying to find import albums! I'll look into your other suggestions. Thanks so much for jumping in with such good insight! I can see you'll fit in well.

What? I love Sarah McClachlan. I do in fact have "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy" and two "Lilith Fair" concert CD's. * Dead Can Dance, Zan you can attest to this - among my top fifteen favorites. * Joni Mitchell toured with my favorite bass player -Jaco Pastorius. Do people know she wrote "Woodstock"? * Love Sarah Brightman. Great suggestions LC!

Sarah Brightman and Tom Jones singing a duet...I never would have guessed; but that's what I love about her, she's hard to categorize.
Yes, I have Mirror Pool. One of the songs on that album, Sanvean, Lisa originally sang with Dead Can Dance--there's a live version of it on the album you should start with--Toward The Within. It's also available on video with interview clips between the live songs.
As for Sarah McLachlan, yes she's been around longer than most people realize...always good to hear someone else likes her older stuff, too. My favorites are "Black" from the second album, and from the first--"Ben's Song"--a VERY intense song I originally mistook to be about a lover who's left, then later heard her say it's about the death of a child; but the lyrics are the kind of words that you can almost bring into it whatever you want to be there--either way, a beautiful song.
Before you check out those others I mentioned, go straight for anything by Cocteau Twins, or a song by their singer, Elizabeth Fraser--"Song To The Siren." I wish I could have caught you before you made the Christmas compilation...Liz sings Frosty The Snowman and makes it sound like one of her own.
Well, next weekend I'll finally be able to start buying music again, so everyone throw me some titles I should be looking for!
