Now we've got our views across about 'Cloudbusting' I have always wondered whether in breathing she's supposed to be in a bubble protected against the explosion and fumes or whether she's supposed to be in a womb. Or is it like a double meaning thing?

My take on this video is the link to mother earth and each other. The womb allegory has a visible umbilical chord. This may be a link to safety and comfort. However, there are issues to face outside the protective bubble. (the inevitable course is revealed by the first flash).
The resiliance of the human spirit, I think, is demonstrated in the rebirth from the water as humanity symbolically reimerges. The threat is omnipresent though in the background of the surviving community. (The second flash) Who knows, maybe Kate will tell us. The issue is relevant in light of the world geo-political climate. How's this for a headline "BUSH DENOUNCES WAR!" TEXT

I've recently heard that this video and song is about a nuclear explosion seen through the eyes of a fetus inside her mothers belly. It's an anti-nuclear song

LORI & ALTRUEST,
Because it is not my favourite of the videos of MS. KATE BUSH, I had not taken the time to attempt to analyse its symbology. However, your interpretations have compelled me to revisit it.
I think the song itself is wonderful, but the soft-focus BOB GUCCIONE look & texture of the videoclip do little to endear it to me.

That always happens to me. I find out the meaning behind some song I'm not that fond of and then I love it. I didn't think 'Breathing' was too good until I anaylised it a bit...now I love it!!

LORI,
I think that if I had seen the videoclip first, I might not have responded so strongly to the song.
The Imagery forming in my mind as I listened to my LP was what caught my imagination, compelling me to play it again & again.

I sometimes skip to the climatic ending. It is an awesome display of vocal alchemy.

I was hooked on "BREATHING" from the first verse, wherein MS. KATE BUSH sings "We're first & last/After the blast".
This told me that she was setting up a post-Apocalyptic scenario, & since I am a lover of Dystopian Science Fiction, "the horse was not difficult to lead to the water"!

That is something I have never thought to do with a videoclip, but that I have done many times with instrumental music, although never with the songs of MS. KATE BUSH, whose lyrics are such an intrinsic part of her storytelling that it had simply not occurred to me to listen to her any other way.

I see Breathing as Life and nuclear holocaust as Death. Kate wrote this song around the time of the invasion of Afganistan by the Russians and I think she feared the worst. It was perhaps her spiritual cry for help. Quite a powerful message used by the anti war organisation, can`t remember their name. perhaps someone can remind me.

I'm Shaun reid from the Big Hairy Kev boards. With regards to the breathing video I have to say that the soft-focus look in my own opinion suits the look of Kate being in a womb. Its one of my favourite videos of all time.
