When I think of how unlikely it is that people from such diverse and even deprived backgrounds seek to express themselves through art; I become more convinced that it is a calling. I will site some examples that hopefully will spur some conversation. Besides Kate Bush, whose shyness and quirkiness subject her to ridicule and ignorance, there are artists that despite their environment or perspective feel compelled to share their vision. Russell Simmons, Outkast, Gary Larson, Ed Wood, Tim Burton just to name a few that have a skewed slant or unorthodox upbringing. . Would anyone care to to elaborate on this theme?

Hey guys I'm back after 40 days in the wilderness! (It sure feels like it!)
Art grows where my Rosemary goes.
A friend of mine found a piece of art that caught his eye in New York. It was a collage of newspaper cuttings arranged into the shape of a naked woman. Underneath it just stated:
ART IS LOVE
Do you understand baby?

there are artists that despite their environment or perspective feel compelled to share their vision. I don't think that it's despite of it, it's because of it. Through some unusual circumstance in their upbringing, from proverty to priviledge, suppression to encouragement, these people have developed a different perspective on our condition. Or perhaps a better understanding of it. Then, through their specific talent, they want to express it, and hopefully be understood or embraced. To relate this to Kate, in my opinion, I think her childhood allowed her to feel loved and protected, and free to be imaginative. She then sees the emotional distress of others and tries to relate in her way, and through her song, give empathy and guidance to her listeners. But sometimes, when it is misunderstood and ridiculed, her strength is stretched to a delicate point. Then she must retreat and comfort her own psyche.

Of course you are right. I guess what I meant was despite the risk of ridicule from their peer group and the public. I'll site Russell Simmons, who has made his fortune with rap music and Def comedy jam, yet he uses his influence and money to bring social and cultural awareness through 'urban poetry' and artistic expression. The risk is not finding favor from anyone. Too urban or naive for mainstream audiences and too esoteric for the fanbase that brought him fame in the first place. Yet it is that bravery, or 'calling' if you will, that makes the fabric of our experiences so much richer. With this in mind (bear with me as I try to tie this all together) I had wondered what Kate Bush would do if asked to produce and collaborate with Outkast, as Big Boi has been quoted as seeking her out to do. How could her vision have touched him so deeply. How could you ever see how he (they) have filtered her influence or the various other so called sophisticated elements of their music. Some say if you mix mud and ice cream the results are poor. However, I truly believe that those who are taking chances and living their dreams elevate all those who open their hearts and minds to try and understand. Ditto! Agreed. Well put. The cycle of life is exhilaration and pain. The thrill can only be quantified in contrast to the despair......... Is that all there is? No. The challenge and the purpose is to struggle on and find new worlds.

Sorry 'bout my temporary absence - I got virussed to death, with my machine making premium rate phone calls without reference to, or instructions from me! Didn't find out 'till I got my phone bill..
I'm slowly getting it sorted, but still don't entirely trust this machine. Bear with me, I will be back!

So how do you temper them Al? I knew you were going to pick up on this thought. Dreams must be tempered with an awareness of responsibility. Every action has an equal and oppoasite reaction. Joy to pain, high to low etc. The balance is staying centered. With turmoil all around, wisdom is knowing the consequences of one's actions.
