I heard this again today (together with One Last Look..) for only the 2nd time. I remember the TV prog, Comic Strip Presents, from which it comes, but I'd quite forgotten this track. Wow! What a blast it is. I love what KB is doing with her voice - she is really rocking. You just don't hear her this uninhibited (though she came close a few times).
I'll put it with James & Don't Put Your Foot on my Kate rocks list.
I assume you non British folks might not know what this is about? If you do, tune out. If you don't, it refers to a charismatic Labour left politician called Ken Livingstone, much loved by the poorer folks of London. He built his reputation in the 70s/80s, as the leader of the controversial Greater London Council - (the GLC of the song). Maggie Thatcher abolished the Metro councils, including this one, and there was a very jolly 12 months or so, with political insults flying around left and right. He is the current mayor of London and is slightly less controversial these days, though he was still booted out of the Labour Party for a short period of time. He remains a thorn in the side of Tony Blair, who has to put up with it because of his popularity. All in all, Ken is a very unusual British Politician.
I often wondered how he felt about this song - he probably loves it!

I sort of knew the story, but I did not know he was the current Mayor of London. Cool. Thanks Adey! This song always cracks me up because my dad's name is Ken. Take out the GLC references and I die laughing imagining she's singing it about dear ol' dad! ;D WHO IS THE FUNKY SEX MACHINE? KEN!!!!! (if you could picture my dad right now I swear you would be on the floor wetting yourself. ) Actually my boss' name is Ken, too. All the men with any kind of authority over me are named Ken!

Here's the Man himself Thanks, it's nice to put a face to the name. He doesn't have the demeanor of a typical politician, I can see that in just this one photo. I can also tell by looking at him that it is a safe bet that Ade Edmonson played him in the GLC film. Am I right? I can totally imagine that. ;D

Actually Sheila, I have to confess that I never saw Ken. I don't know who took the title role - sorry. Maybe someone else here?
Ade Edmonson is probably a safe bet!

Well, Mr. Edmonson (your namesake, Adey ) is the funky sex machine, so I just thought... ;D (for an American I am a HUGE fan of Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmonson! I loved them way before i knew they had any Kate connection, so it was a TOTAL thrill to see the Comic Strip troupe work with her! )

I've been listening to this song lately and got into the forum today to understand what the song is about. I read about Ken Livingstone political career, I didn’t know anything about this man. And being aware of all the work he has done and re-listening the song I just was wondering… I have no idea about Kate’s political inclinations but doesn’t this song sound like a mockery song to you? I mean… “who is the funky sex machine? KEN!!!”
