As requested, I am reviving this board. We will see what kind of interest and commentary results from the latest generation of this project. In preparing this week's set list, I had in mind some of the topics from the past week. Our discussions of spirituality did not seem to end as harmoniously as I'd wished. So instead of words, I'd like to share some music that defines the roots of my interest in exploring the other side of reality. Please listen to the following song's by my all-time favorite artist's. They seem to share a vibe, albeit from different perspectives. Nonetheless they use genius composition combined with stellar musicianship. Their truth lift my spirits every time. As I assume you all have Kate Bush music on hand, there is no link provided for her. I have included three of her song's that help tie this theme together. See what you think. ( click on the links in Blue Be sure and crank up the volume. Enjoy: Zawinul - a 5 minute (amateurish) video made by an Italian Fan. But please listen to the music! Kate Bush "The Fog"Loreena McKennitt - sample video from her 'Quinlan Rd' site: "Mummers Dance"Kate Bush "Sensual World"Steely Dan - an alternate take from Katy Lied (Dr Wu)Kate Bush "Deeper Understanding"

I'd like to share some music that defines the roots of my interest in exploring the other side of reality. Please listen to the following song's by my all-time favorite artist's. They seem to share a vibe, albeit from different perspectives. Nonetheless they use genius composition combined with stellar musicianship. Their truth lift my spirits every time. I know you intentionally did not include you thoughts on why you chose these pieces - how each spiritually moves you and how they are connected, but I hope you will soon. Zawinul - a 5 minute videoThis was too long a download for me to watch the video. I listened to a few tracks from the website, though, and enjoyed them. Not exactly my sort of music, but I can appreciate its placement among these. I was quickly reminded of Santana and the spiritual rhythms moving freely through the music. It is very uplifting. Which tracks did you specifically have in mind? Kate Bush - The FogKate Bush - Sensual WorldKate Bush - Deeper UnderstandingYour Kate choices all show a theme of transcending common humanity and relationships of several different varieties. The Fog lyrically and musically, metaphorically illustrates the confused and wistful emotions we develop as we age towards our parents. Musically, her soft touch and arrangement is perfect for how delicate this relationship can be. As for Sensual World, she develops a sexual rhythm to illustrate the building excitement as another level of awareness is discovered. How can you not be swept along with her? Deeper Understanding's use of digitized sound along with the very soothing chanting of the Trio creates a contrast between the cold technology and the comforting humanity. By blending them, she makes the connection and explains the character's motivation with sympathy. Loreena McKennitt - sample video Mummers DanceThis I own the remaster of, with the video included along with the interview. So, I have a little more exposure here. Her's is pilgrimage, a journey of spiritual enlightenment though music. She is the closest to what you are trying to explain here, I think. She is learning about our heritage as one people through art and music and giving it back beautifully. Steely Dan - an alternate take from Katy Lied (Dr Wu)Aja - Steely Dan with Steve Gadd on drumsI'm just starting to appreciate Steely Dan recently, at both your and Adey's suggestions. I have the hits, and remasters of Aja and Pretzel Logic. I had tried to like it before, but I feel more openminded to the jazz arrangements now. I don't know if it is uplifting for me yet... but I could see that coming with more appreciation of the music. At the moment, I am enjoying the relaxing but challenging songs and exploring more. Snakes - Peter Erskine (Percussionist on Kate's new album) along with Don Grolnik, Dave Sanborn, Will Lee etc...Couldn't load this... sorry. Drum Duet - This one is Chester Thompson and Phil Collins in a 'dueling drums' format.Excellent. I loved this piece. When was this from? I wish Phil Collins would have explored this area more, rather than the adult contemporary route. I found it very exciting. I wish I could find more on this... but this link will have to do. After listening to your tracks, I thought I'd like to listen to: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000065V86/qid=1125604023/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-8205816-5018522?v=glance&s=musicTry The Heat and Slow Marimbas. The short 30 clips don't do the music justice. I like to hear the instrumentalized versions to appreciate the build and feeling. Other uplifting Gabriel scores are Passion and The Long Walk Home. I love his vocals, but these reach me differently. Especially the inclusion of the Blind Boys From Alabama on latter. Try to find a clip of the song on Up titled Sky Blue to hear the song with lyrics and vocals. Thanks for going to so much effort Al. I always thought this was an important thread. It has given me much in the way of exploring other music that I wouldn't typically. I'd like to hear your thoughts and maybe some suggestions by other members.

Inspired by the thoughts from this morning... I'm currently spinning: Loreena McKennitt - Book of Secrets Anne Dudley - Songs From Victorious City Richard Robbins - Heat & Dust (soundtrack) I wish you could hear how beautiful the last CD is. I am a huge fan of Richard Robbins and his ability to combine original compositions, classical pieces and the flavor of the film and historical period. This is a very rare CD, but worth the trouble. Speaking of... Heat and Dust is an exquisite film about enlightenment and spiritual serenity. You have to have patience, since it is a quiet film. I continue to think about themes put forth in it, and I find myself drifting back regularly. Merchant Ivory films tend to do that, if you watch them properly and enjoy them. You may not agree, but I think they have mixed well today.

Thank you so much for the response here Zan. I will comment further on your recommendations soon - as I plan to invetigate. Well, I'm not quite sure if I gave you what you were looking for, but at least I listened and tried. I did want to add that I mentioned your suggestions when I went home that night to my husband. Not only did he know the Chester Thompson and Phil Collins drum duet well... he had at least 2 versions and the video of the performances. So, you know of course, I got to watch them that evening. To watch them perform together live was amazing. Collins and Thompson seem to achieve a zen-like state of rhythm, with Collins becoming one with the beat. You should really try to locate a copy if you really enjoy it. By the way, another similar experience is the live version of Gabriel's Signal to Noise on the Paris Amnesty International Concert, with Youssou N'dour. When N'dour sings, a spirit seems to be moving all through him, like a wonderful exorcism. You can't help but be caught in the moment.

Thanks Zan. I believe the video you refer to is available @ the "Drummerworld'' website. (Quicktime format) that I posted. I have seen it nevertheless. I've been under the weather for the past few days and will get caught up soon on the follow-ups.

Trust that you are soon back to normal operating temperature..
I've seen the Collins/Thompson duet on that site I think. I saw it live too on a Genesis UK tour some years back.
