After taking AT's Spiritual Journey, I was inspired to consider my own play lists.
At the risk of being maudlin, I realised that I was much drawn to songs that are in part elegiac. Here are some of my own favourites with a few comments. I won't tell you how to find these as they're all well known, and you will certainly have some of them in your music collections.
Kate Bush "Blow Away"
As I'm sure everybody here knows, written in memory of
Bill Duffield, Lighting Engineer, who died accidentally (and ironically) on her Tour of Life.
"Put out the light. Then put out the light. Bolan and Moony are heading the show tonight"
Elton John "Song for Guy"
A despatch rider for Rocket Records, remembered here in a gentle hypnotic piano melody.
Don McLean "Vincent"
Van Gough remembered here in one of the great American songs.
"They did not listen, they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will"
Elton John (and Bernie Taupin) "Candle in the Wind"
Needs no comment from me.
"I would have liked to have known you, but I was just a kid. Your candle burned down long before your legend ever did"
Sting "Fragile"
Inspired by the memory of Engineer and peace campaigner Ben Linden, killed by the Contras in a case of mistaken identity. This beautiful song urges us all to be aware of our mortality in dangerous times. After much soul searching, Sting performed this in Italy, before a small audience on that most terrible of days we have come to know as 9/11. I have performed this song myself on many occasions, but after that day I never will again. (My own small act of rememberance for what its worth).
"For all those born beneath an angry star, lest we forget how fragile we are.."
It is a great honour for any artist to use their talent in the memory of another. Adrian
