Please give your view on this very widely studied subject. Experiences posted on other threads demonstate many of you appreciate this aspect of your mind far more than most people I have met.

I haven't studied the subconciousness in any detail. I don't know the classical theories or the emminent names that have done work in this field. My technical knowledge is limited to The Readers Digest and the old classic sci fi movie " Forbidden Planet " and it's Monsters From the Id!
I've come to believe that subconciousness is the mind's clearing house. A place where ideas, half observed sensory perceptions, ethical & moral problems, unresolved practical difficulties and dilemmas all percolate together in a completely unregulated vat of free association. As a result it's partly a problem solving network from which answers spring unbidden, but more importantly it's the engine of creativity. In any artisitic endeavour, it's the concious mind that provides the technical tools of your chosen trade and it's possible to create entirely on this uninspired technical level. But the true creativity, the inspiration, the flashes of brilliance all spring from this irrational wellhead.
I'm sure that students of psychology and psychiatry may disagree with me, and point to other important functions/workings of the subconciousness about which I know nothing. But this is my twopence worth of contribution. I look forward to seeing what comments you others might make.

I will not compare what Adey has written to my recollections of the principles and dynamics of the subconcious. Any distinctions made between our views, you may draw on your own. I will admit to some experience and training in this field. I have in fact been plying some of the methods of manipulating behavior on this board for experimental observation. Those that have noticed this are not surprised. Those that haven't won't even bother to read this. For the purposes of this discussion I will refer to the 'unconcious mind' as it applies more to humanity in general. The subconscious will be refered to as it applies to individuals. The conscious mind can process only a very limited amout of information. This data is subject to evaluation based on many environmental and even genetic influences. The 'unconsious mind' can absorb millions of bits of data without judgement or filtering. Desire (much of, if extrapolated, is sexual - if you're in the Freudian camp) is the activity of 'will' being directed into a mental concept. Emotion acts as a command-central for our pre-set ideas about our surroundings. Character development and behavioral change then becomes a function of intellect and intelligence - of which self-awareness is key.. Love, hate, vanity, self-pity, narcissim and jealousy are the primary factors that dictate emotional behavior. Abreaction or the purging effect that the release of emotion gives may guide our behavior. But intense emotions neutralize intellectual concerns. The negatively based, obsessive, or extreme emotions can inhibit rationality. Consequently, when the rush of the emotion is replaced by a subsequent new emotion, then guilt or anxiety often result. The backlash of resentment and detachment may follow. Reason and emotion are often at odds. Our own subconcious mind will continously feed us new stimuli. Will you have the intellect to handle it? Enlightenment, study and self-awareness combine to be your best innoculation. Attitude and desire can work together to motivate the conscious mind to find freedom and happiness - the resulting by-product of vanquishing ignorance and negative emotion. Confidence and peace of mind are much more desirable than fear and anxiety. That's what I strive for in my little world - this board being part of that. To play on this level requires thought and preparation. Are you willing to make the effort? Are you equipped to deal with the power of suggestion? Peace.

Sven and Adey, I'll bet this is not the direction that NEO was headed. However, in light of recent comments, I don't want to alter what he has to say on the matter. I'll weigh in afterward.

Adey, your open minded attitude refreshes me. Sven, your view as posted here confirms my suspicion that much like Freuds idea that the conscious mind is only 10% and the subconscious 90%, you have revealed the top part of your "iceberg." I look forward to more of the bulk of your thinking. Altruest, please elaborate on the direction you "see" me wanting to take things, I am keen to learn how at this time you perceive me.
