This is a puzzle I used to know when I was younger, you may have come across it before but I'm still going to post it.
A farmer is on one side of an island with a chicken, a fox, and a sack of grain and he needs to get all three across to the other side. The boat will only carry the farmer and one other thing at a time, but the chicken cannot be left with the grain and the fox cannot be left with the chicken. How would he get all three across without anything being eaten?

At a guess, I would say that it doesn't matter what will fit in the Boat, because they'll be walking across the island anyway?

No because there's a lot of water between the 2 islands which is why he needs the boat to get to the other side.

Ah right, so there's actually 2 islands then? You only mentioned one.
Hmm, that needs more thought..

My brain is too full to try and remember this process; but here are the simple smart-alec ways: * Dump out the grain and put the chicken in the sack. * Kill the fox.

If in doubt, change the question..
Actually, Kate Bush is on my island, so who gives a damn about how the other stuff gets across?

Three men enter a cheap hotel. The new assistant manager charges them $10.00 apiece for their fleabag rooms. Upon return the manager informs his assistant that he overcharged the men. The special is 3 rooms for $25.00.
So in carrying out his bosses order to refund the difference, he takes five one's with him to redistribute. While trying to figure the math, he decides to just give them a dollar apiece back and pocket the other two.
Summary: the men paid nine dollars apiece for their room for a total of twenty seven dollars. The assistant manager only kept two of the thirty original dollars.
27 + 2 = 29 where is the other dollar?

The answer was here but I've decided that I will let the others have a stab at it. Sven, you are not allowed to answer this cos' you've already seen the answer.

Did the assistant manager's assistant pocket the dollar or am I way of the mark?

The assisant manager pocketed only 2 of the original 30. They paid 9 each 27 + 2 = 29. He did not pocket a third dollar.

Sorry I confused myself. If the assistant pocketed $2 then the other $1 was pocketed by the manager.

Sorry I confused myself. If the assistant pocketed $2 then the other $1 was pocketed by the manager. Absolutely not. He kept the 25 dollars in the til. The 5 dollar overage was to be split. The assistant kept 2 and they got 1 each. 27 + 2 = 29. Where's the other dollar?

I'm at a loss here so I'm submitting. It's probably really straight forward but I'm throwing the towel in.
