Right from the start - when Wuthering was released. All of a sudden this crazy lovely lady was everywhere:radio,tv etc. I loved the single and bought the Kick Inside which I loved. Even then I knew that she was going to be an important world artist. Next came Lionheart and the Tour of Life, which I saw both nights at Bham Hippodrome. On the first day I met Kate and her band at the Albany Hotel where she was staying-after a tip off from someone at the theatre...Wow, she was so tiny it seemed. She smiled and said hello but wouldn't sign an autograph. Her band were very protective which was fair enough. The gigs were stunning - moved to tears, I'd never seen anything like it, then or since. The video is good, but you really had to be there to appreciate just how good it was
I didn't get my autograph until her album signing session at HMV Bham, when The Dreaming (KB's real masterpiece) was released. I bought the album in the store and Kate signed it. It was my birthday that day and she added a nice message. I've never met her since but there you go.
Great days....

Great story Adey. You were one of the lucky few that saw her perform live, We've commented here before on how awesome her Hammersmith performance was. The videos are great but what a shame there were so few concerts.

Cheers Al, wow over 2000 postings!
Something else occurs about that day. Whilst I and two friends were loitering outside the stage door during the day, her wardrobe/stage dresser came out for a break. I think her name was Lisa. She was so nice and very patient with our questions, despite apparently having had a row with KB earlier. She told us about the costumes and I recall her saying "The timing is so tight in the show, I just have 20 seconds sometimes to get her (KB) out of God knows what and into the next one!"
Yes I was lucky I guess, to see the shows. When I went for tickets, all they had left on the first night was a box for 3. Of course I had to had to have it - cost a fortune I recall (I was only 18) The second night, I got a cancellation seat, lucky again!
You're right about the number of shows Kate has performed, but what can you do? I know there were reports of her complete exhaustion after the tour. I guess record company pressure was the only reason she toured at all, but it did seem like a labour of love. I often wonder if thats the reason why KB did so many record signing tours in those days - as a way of keeping in touch with her fans and showing them a physical presence. Who knows, it certainly seems unlikely now that the lady will tour again (hell, I'm just happy that she is still recording occasionally!)
I wonder if members know of any plans to re-release the live video onto DVD? There might be some extra tracks included, certainly KB performed more tracks than appeared on the vid. The Kick Inside was a sad omission, performed solo on piano with a solitary dancer (Gary Hurst I think) laying a chintz veil over her head at the end - spine tingling!
Oops, rattling on again. must go!

...I've seen some pictures that I assume are of Kate on stage singing to what appears to be a camel, was Kashka performed on stage?

MM Well, I wasn't there but I think I read that the camel was a practical joke on Kate. She didn't know about it until it showed up on stage! But being the professional she is, she went along with it. I believe it was during "Egypt". The live version was way different than the NFE version. Much campier.

Madscientist (experiment 4 perhaps?)
I think Sheila got it right in her post. I certainly didn't see a camel -stuffed or otherwise- so I assume it wasn't a part of the standard show! I don't recall KB doing Kashka, but she did perform Egypt. nb This was a new song to the audience at the time as Never for Ever hadn't then been released - ditto Violin, but of course you'll have seen that on the vid.
I haven't seen the camel photographs to which you refer, but if it was a gag by the band lets hope KB didn't get the hump....

I think one reason why I lost track of Kate for some years was just being so far away. Although Kate certainly has a following down under it's not exactly the same as actually being in the same country. Love the avatar by the way. Patrick McGoohan and The Prisoner. Awesome. --Paul--
