As we have lately been posting some independent artists and lesser known talent; I thought a thread to bring some of these to the forefront would be an interesting discussion. If a buzz from any of the suggestions that crop up is created we can then devote separate threads for quotes, interviews and samples.e.g. like with Gabriela Kulka just recently. I'd like to showcase one artist per post and see what develops.... I'll start with a famous artist that is known internationally for her acting and modeling. And although her music has gotten some notice, this part of her career never really flourished and has largely gone unnoticed. I have mentioned her in the past. But this is a good time to reintroduce her work to those that haven't heard her unique writing and performance skills. Milla Jovovich credits Kate Bush as one of her main inspirations. Her 1994 album "Divine Comedy" is well worth a listen. I knock the dust off and play it on occasion. For now look it up on Amazon and hear some samples. I'll post some links, interviews and videos soon. Please comment and share a suggestion as well.

i can't help but mention tactile gemma here...they are too good, and too unkown not to mention them. i first heard of them on a site entitled kate bush tori amos cocteau twins ....the band was recomended to me as a cross between these three artists/bands ..and sure enough it suited the description. fact is, their album is amazing from begining to end, nothing boring about it. they sound like 2 witches with incredible voices chanting, but they also have that enya flow. one of my favorite songs of all time is by them, it's called quite quiet ...it is a masterpiece. i wish i could give some kind of link for sample, but there is nothing out there. the vocals are done by two sisters, each with their own unique and amazing voices. the one is in another swedish band called atrox who preform heavy metal music, and she was voted best heavy metal voice, but 'tactile gemma' is nothing like that at all. the band is a must.

Sheesh, Al. first I have to mention something I found unknown to me whilst perusing another thread. Kate had albums titled 9th Wave, The B-sides and Cathy's Demos. When the hell did that happen? I really do live in the boondocks as far as she's concerned. I look in her section all the time at stores, and I never saw them. Never heard anything about 'em. Guess that's why I joined this group. There's one obscure album by someone we all know and love (or hate); probably can't even find it (I have it on LP). Manfred Mann did a jazz-rock album in 71 or 72 called Chapter III. Great sleaze fusion. I'll tink of others.

Sheesh, Al. first I have to mention something I found unknown to me whilst perusing another thread. Kate had albums titled 9th Wave, The B-sides and Cathy's Demos. Well in fairness, the 'Ninth Wave' album was actually just side two of "The Hounds of Love" even though all the songs are believed tied to a drowning theme and a famous boating excursion (too simplistic, I know...but that's for another discussion) Most of the b-sides can be found in the boxed set - "This Woman's Work" - which I hear is still available at a decent price (import) And lastly, the Demo's were never actually released with Kate's permission. They only exist as reworked recordings of the 'Phoenix Broadcast' of them (as I recall) Go to "Linkin Park" at the 'Other Topics' board to find the links to them... Well you're at the right place if you want to talk about music - be it Kate Bush or whomever. And does the Manfred Mann album you describe contain the infamous misheard lyric - "Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night?"...

Do you mean: "Wrapped up like a douche, runnin' in the night?" Absolutely not. That should be under a new thread of the most misquoted songs of all time, and it wasn't obscure. You made me go down into the wine cellar and get my LPs. Chapter Three had fantastic horns and the great bass of Steve York, who also played with . . . everyone, including Vinegar Joe, Robert Palmer's first band. Anyway, besides Mann, they had Mike Hugg writing and on piano and singing. Nothing like Quinn or the stuff that came later (it was sort of Benny Goodman meets Marilyn Manson). If you ever took Kevan's suggestion to listen to Morphine and liked them, this has the same attitude and then some. Best horn-rock album ever except for maybe the Sons Of Champlain's first. The song Snakeskin Garter is best known, such as it is. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll make a copy (tape). It's worth it. Pat Methany is known in jazz circles, but not to the general public, and he has the same artistic fire of those we appreciate. And under "New Age," a term I hate, Andreas Vollenweider has some wonderful melody (electric harp--the type played by angels). Check him out. :DMichael

'Blinded By the Light' is not an obscure song. But that was my immediate thought when you mentioned them. And BTW, it was written by Springsteen and surprisingly his only #! hit. (If I remember correctly)

Do you mean: "Wrapped up like a douche, runnin' in the night?" But of course. I fully intend to do so. 'This weekend if I can remember. I don't know about that. I'd put select "Steely Dan" and "Brecker Brothers" works in that fray. 'Love Pat Metheny and his collaborations. e.g. Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker.

I wish you were female, it would make life a lot easier. Anyway, yes, Steely Dan and Breckers are fantastic; but I'm talking about full albums; Chicago: Blood, Sweat and Tears, etc. ((oh, and Collesium, very underrated), where the horns were integral to the music and the whole concept. And yes, you do remember correctly; Blinded by The Light was Springsteen (Manfred Mann recorded 1 Springsteen song on all his albums after Chapter 3). Here, this is for you: Subject: The Poodle and the Leopard A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles, along for the company. One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old poodle thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?" Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!", says the leopard, "That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!" Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine! Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?", but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says. "Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard! Moral of the story... Don't mess with us old farts...age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! Bullshit and brilliance only come with age and experience. Thanks for the explanations about Kate's albums. I was really starting to feel left out. My turntables are in need of styluses so I'll make a copy soon at a friends of the Chapter 3 album. You should love it. Michael

I wish you were female, it would make life a lot easier. Hmm. Strange I suppose having a vagina would be very convenient for me. But I probably would get no work done at all. Well "Children of Sanchez" by Chuck Mangione could be somewhat horn rock (with a jazz edge) and a good candidate even though it is somewhat redundant and annoying on occasion. But I like horns mostly with jazz arrangements anyway - Wayne Shorter Tom Scott The Marsalis Brothers etc. Chicago and BST - not so much... No problem.

Al wrote: I say, I might just do that. ;D Hey, I just now noticed Gaby (if I may be so familiar ) replied. I also want to check out the other artist you mentioned there, as well as my constant backlog of similar situations... but yeah Milla is now on The List. yeah... an interesting band (one guy actually) that is nice to listen to while lazing around the house. I've been listening to him a lot lately and couldn't help but mention him given the nice lead-in you provided.

I'm sure you can be more familiar than that. She would, I bet, appreciate a direct response from you on her thread here. She may prefer Gaba to Gaby though. Gaby was a crusty old cowboy character with Roy Rogers (?) Hopefully my CD shows up today.

Try THIS - Cibo MattoGo to "Stereo Type A Prelude Sampler" and then to "Speechless" and "King of Silence." This Oriental club band has (had) John Lennon's son Sean on bass. The music is quirky and catchy. They are obsessed, it seems, with food. I'll try to find a Michael Gondry video of there's as well to link. EDIT - HERE it is. Go to "Sugar Water" Michael Gondry directs this creative split screen video of the characters going in opposite directions - mirroring each other. If you like this sample you can find the entire video @ Yahoo video.
