There wasn't much competition this week: The Sensual World and Breathing are both being booted out.
There are now 3 songs left. This week, you just have to choose 1 song to vote off - ie. your least favourite out of the selection. State why you chose it to vote off, or if you find that too hard, say why you love the song...
Your choices are:
[glow=orange,2,300]Night Of The Swallow Running Up That Hill Hello Earth[/glow]
You have until Monday 14th March to vote. Oooh, the suspense!!!

You have them listed in order of my preference. i.e., [glow=orange,2,300]Night Of The Swallow Running Up That Hill Hello Earth[/glow] So by default, my selections are - [glow=red,2,300]RUTH[/glow] [glow=red,2,300]Hello Earth[/glow]
Instead of finding any fault, because there is none, with the other finalists; I will just say that "Night of the Swallow'' has it all. Not quite as deep as the other two, but it still evokes powerful emotions. Here are my criteria from seperating it from the pack: range, background vocals melody changing of pace uilean pipes percussion It is musically preferable to me over the others. RUTH or Hello Earth would not disappoint me, though, as the ultimate winner however. p.s. I realize that only one vote was necessary. 'Just tipping my hand,

i'm sticking to my previous choice "RUTH" although i'm risking in another hex from Xan. your previous hex appearently worked Xan, cause during 3 days there were problems with my house's pipe system so we had to bring mechanics to fix it and my house was all messy and there were almost no water. I think you need to consider a job as a proffesional witch Xan . BTW Al, you need to vote only one song off. i won't let you kick out "hello earth" so soon

Much as it grieves me (and it does, it does..), I'm saying a painfull farewell to Night of the Swallow.
AT's right, this breathtaking song does have everything and was arguably the earliest of Kate's songs with an obvious Irish vibe. From the instrumentation, to the lyrics with their IRA/Republican organisation references..
To these ears and in retrospect, Night of the Swallow was the most accurate pointer - (on an album full of them) - to an essential style she would develop & explore in the future. More importantly than that though, it's a hugely enjoyable song, with a superb chorus and a re-expression of an almost bewildering combination of personal cultural influences - some subtle, some less so.
You know that if I'm rejecting work of this quality, and especially with it being the one track here from my favourite Kate Bush album, then the remaining combatants must be profoundly brilliant and magical compositions..

So I take it Al' that you want to vote "Hello Earth" out? I'm also gunning down [glow=orange,2,300]Hello Earth[/glow] again this week, for the same reasons as last week. Nothing to add to it really! "Night of The Swallow" to win Adey, will we ever agree?

to the lyrics with their IRA/Republican organisation references... Do you think you could elaborate on this, Adey? I think I've missed these allusions!

I think I've missed these allusions! Oh no! I think that's what makes it so incredible! I remember first listening to it, and reading the lyrics with it repeatedly, until it started to form an arguement and story. It certainly is the predecessor to Jig of Life. Oh the epic sweep and emotion of it all. "Give me a break! Ooh, let me try! Give me something to show For my miserable life! Give me something to take! Would you break even my wings, Just like a swallow?" By the way... I am holding on to my vote until I am sure. I really think we have narrowed it down to the essential Kate... and I would be happy with any of the winners at this point... each represents the best aspects of her music.

Do you think you could elaborate on this, Adey? I think I've missed these allusions! Certainly. The most obvious is the expression, 'to be going over the water' , frequently (mis)used, but generally suggests a secret trip from Ireland across the Irish Sea to Great Britain, usually for illegal or nefarious purposes (smuggling, terrorism etc). The pilot in this song is on such a potentially dangerous mission.. As for the rest, re-read the lyrics with this in mind and appreciate the concern of his wife/lover.. As I said, a brilliant song and one that I too could live with as the ultimate winner, but don't be too quick to write off RUTH & Hello Earth. That we don't agree Sto is what makes the game worthwhile.. (Besides, it's obviously an eejit you're being is it not? -- j/k)

So you're really prepared to risk those horrors again? I think you need to consider a job as a proffesional witch Xan . And you think I'm not? And, after much debate, I prepared to vote off.... (drum roll please) Hello Earth Just because I had to pick one, and I don't think it is as quite as brave as the other two... one emotionally and one musically.

Since I erroneously vote for two, I'd prefer to cast two half votes (RUTH and Hello Earth). If that is not within the rules then Hello Earth I suppose must go.

I vote to eliminate RUTH. I love it, but of the three songs remaining, it is the one I can most imagine someone else having written. To me, the other two are more uniquely "Kate."
