Just in time for the January sales, we've got a massive, whopping great clear-out this week, with four songs being voted off! "Strange Phenomena", "Room For The Life", "Feel It" and "L'amour Looks Something Like You" are all waving goodbye as they ride off into the sunset. So that doesn't leave many left, really:
Moving Wuthering Heights Them Heavy People
This week, just vote for the one that you'd like to see go from this mini-list, saying why you think it's lasted to the top 3. Next week will be the final...exciting stuff!
Happy New Year everyone!

Wuthering Heights
I think it's obvious why it lasted this long, and I'm sure will continue to stay. In fact I'll probably get banned from this board for voting it off! Of course I love the song, but the other 2 are my favorites.

Them Heavy People
Such a great song that shows how Kate feels about deep subjects, the deeper the better! The video also draws you in to enjoy it more.
BTW, I like your avatar slogan Sheila, it reminds me of the person who invented the drawing board; what did they go back to?

My favourite part of this song is the ending (not because that's where it ends...), the repeated phrase of "Rolling the..." - it's great! The lyrics, too, are inspirational and original. I love the whirling of the Dervishes!

At least I won't be the first blasphemer here. I'm also going to vote off "Wuthering Heights" My first exposure to it was the Pat Benatar version, which did not float my boat. However, after seeing Kate perform 'THP' on SNL, I was mesmerized. "Them Heavy People" actually got more airplay in the US tham "WH" (as I remember) Anyway "Moving" and "THP" are my two favorites here. Had I heard "WH" first it might be different though. It is her signature song. I love the timing, the concept and the lyrics. Her presentation was beautiful, albeit a bit less mature than the "New Vocals" version on "The Whole Story" If we do this on "TWS" then I would vote it #1 there.

Do you prefer the "New Vocals" version of "Wuthering Heights" then, Al'?

I'm voting off ' Them Heavy People', again. I think I voted it off in the very first round, hehe ;D And about 'Wuthering Heights'. I don't like her voice much in the new vocal, but I do like the screaming she does at the end. I much prefer her higher pitched, younger sounding voice for this track, just would like the end of the new vocal pasted on the end. Maybe I'll do that for my own personal listening

I agree totally, Lori. I much prefer the original for the first three-quaters. I read on some message board someone commenting that at the end of the original version, she must have gone out to have a fag break, hence not singing at the end, which made me laugh. The end of the New Vocals version is really haunting, I love it. I have to sing it to myself when I listen to the end of the original

Do you prefer the "New Vocals" version of "Wuthering Heights" then, Al'? Yes I do, Sto. But Lori makes a good point. It may be that I just love the climatic ending so well in the new version. That ending tacked on to the original would be good.

Well, my vote off this week will have to be... Them Heavy PeopleMainly because I think that Moving and Wuthering Heights are stronger songs. Actually, I do think there were probably better singles to choose than this one, and maybe the use of the word "heavy" dates the song for me, and the grammatical use of "them" here bothers me sometimes (anyone else?). And, I agree with Altruest on WH. I like the TWS version better, more mature and urgent, but just as ethereal. However, I probably wouldn't vote it as number one on TWS, that's reserved for E4. I think I'm getting ahead of myself here . Anyway, for this week, it's the above.

How many other songs can you think of like that? e.g. "Groovy Kind of Love" "Feeling Groovy" (BTW I don't care for either) But Songs like "Groovin' by the Rascals, like "THP", overcome the dated reference. It won't be long 'til current Hip-Hop slang will be out of date. Once you hear "Bling-Bling" in a McDonalds commercial, then it's out. I've heard that term will soon be in the dictionary as a slang term - how premature. Using "Them" is also excused, as it is a poetic device to seperate 'them' from those who hide from the truth or the journey. I also think it infers ignorance to the slacker that was her character in the song Plus it flows so beautifully.

I'm just looking for reasons as to why I don't like it as much as the others. I understand the uses of "heavy" and "them" here, and there was no grammatical error - it was intentional. But sometimes to my hyper-sensitive ear, it sounds off... Much like the end of Sat in Your Lap: "I want the answers quickly, but I don't have no energy." Intentional, but still jarring sometimes.
