However you discovered Kate Bush; what has kept you around for so long?

Well I haven't really been kept for so long. Only about 3 years. And she has produced a lot of music to keep me busy for that length of time

I haven't been around so long either. Only about 3 years as well. I had mentioned that I only owned The Whole Story and HOL special edition when I got the box set as a gift. Then, of course, I bought TRS. The B-sides and live tracks were never rare to me, I had them all the way along, so they were equivalent to the album tracks. I suppose there was so much to discover all at once, I could have very likely been overwhelmed. Kate Bush has probably been the longest I have been interested in an artist without tiring of him or her. It's probably due to the fact that there is always something new to discover and a sound for every mood. Her music has evolved over the course of her career (not every musician can say that) and I find that I have grown with it.

Whatever has keep you as a Kate fan, is also what keeps you coming to this forum, I hope. We talk about other artists, ideas, philosophy, trivia etc; but, in the end it's all about Kate Bush here. It's about her influence on us and our slant on things. It's about her influence on other artist's. It's also the common ground we share in discussing her music's impact. (which apparently has a more than 10 year shelf life) So again, why are you here?

Hello all, For me the music does not seem to age in the way that some stuff does (the music from the 60s sounds like the 60s, music from the 70s....you get the picture), but Kate's stuff just seems to mature as she did. Erm, how can I put this, the first three albums were mostly written/concieved probably in Kates teens, The Dreaming, hounds and sensual in her 20s and red shoes in her 30s, but the music itself does not date. You clould hear TMWTCIHE on the radio never having heard of Kate (oh what a sad life ) and not know that the track is 25 years old! Also each track is unique, it has it's own sound (you can not compare James and the Cold Gun with Feel it....where as you listen to the album of other artists (and I do mean respectable people who write, play and sing their own stuff) and yes the lyrics are different, but the singing voice and backing track are the same Any way thats my 10ps worth. Good noght all. MM

Person'ly it is to chat with like minded peeps. If you like (Love) Kates music then your head will be wired in a certain way that makes you think about things in a different way to others, and I find that very rare! MM

Well said, MM! Exactly! That was going to be my exact sentiment. Zan you just expressed it more eloquently than I was about to. This bunch is certainly becoming more cohesive.

I keep coming back to Kate Bush, because of her incredible musicianship, her deep and diverse songwriting and her amazing voice. Like the rest of us, I recognise her as virtually unique in the company of her peers. For me Kate has done much more than most to legitimise 'pop' music - to raise it above the level of the trivial and to demonstrate it's worth.
I come back too, because of her dignity and determination to make her way through life on her own terms.
I keep coming back to the forum, because you guys are smart. You know what I know...

I guess I can respond to this now if 6 weeks of being here (almost daily for the last month - lurking or posting as time permitted) is long enough.
I am still here because I feel a kinship with the people on this board. The kinship I feel isn't limited to our common admiration for Kate, but that common admiration figures into it significantly. Some members admire her for reasons that are different from mine, but the fact remains that we all see that she is extraordinary. IMO, to see what is truly extraordinary you need an open and inquisitive mind, because the greatest beauty often appears in the strangest places. Whether it is part of one's natural disposition or something one cultivates, it is one of the things I value most in people.
Apart from the fact that the membership here appreciates Kate's work, there are other things that make it apparent to me that there are many such minds on this board. One is the other topics (non-Kate-related) that I have seen discussed here. It is pretty hard to find other "ordinary people" who want to discuss these topics, and in the future I hope to have more opportunities (time-wise) to participate! Another is the way posters tolerate personality differences. There seem to be plenty of strong personalities on this board (which is to be expected on a forum like this one) but a willingness to tolerate differing opinions and let things "roll off" is also evident... another sign that open and inquisitive minds prevail!
And of course, as a shiny new Kate fan, I really enjoy having people with whom to discuss her music. So far, I haven't been able to "convert" anyone in my circle of family and friends (where are those open and inquisitive minds?!), so without this board I would feel completely isolated with my "discovery" - how frustrating!

What a pleasant surprise. Not only are there numerous posts to read today, but this one in particular is a wonderful affirmation and tribute to us all. Sal, thanks for the kind words. I am looking foward to your contributions on the ''other topics'' as well as the Kate related ones. It seems that I gravitate to extending the discourse to encompassing more than just fan worship and adulation - as do most of the regulars here. It'll be nice to have another voice to temper the discussions. I wasn't sure if our tolerance showed through. There are some diverse and strong personalities here. It is good that we do not come of as petty or divisive to you. Too much agreement can often be boring.

Well said Al. So far, I haven't been able to "convert" anyone in my circle of family and friends (where are those open and inquisitive minds?!), so without this board I would feel completely isolated with my "discovery" - how frustrating! One of the main reasons I'm here too Sal. KB is an artist whose work always merits discussion.

So far, I haven't been able to "convert" anyone in my circle of family and friends (where are those open and inquisitive minds?!), so without this board I would feel completely isolated with my "discovery" - how frustrating! I was only going to quote portions of this, but I found I agreed with every word. The kinship has kept me here for at least a year and a half now. My free time ebbs and flows, but I keep spended a few precious moments here to catch up or at least read about what everyone is up to. Thanks for posting this Sal... it was really beautifully said. Tolerance, patience and respect are key ingredients. I really believe we try to encourage opinion and discussion, so long as we remember we have only type to communicate and our courtesy and tone are important. I think Kate actually says it the best: "It is this that brings us together... It's all right, darling, we can do this together. It's all right, darling, I can think of nothing better. I don't know you, and you don't know me: It is this that brings us together. I don't know what you are looking for in me. I don't know what I want, but my heart is needing. Am I yours? Are you mine? We'll find all we're meant to find. In your life, in my life, There are secrets too dark To let out, to let go of, To get over. But that's all right, baby. That's all right by me. It's all right now. Just let me say Please be kind to my mistakes. Be kind to me." Slightly amended for space. ;D
