Gloomy Sunday. I've never cared for Billie Holiday's singing... I know she's highly regarded and so on but her voice just sounds distracting to me, and takes me away from the song. Anyway, I looked for what I considered a more pleasing version version of Gloomy Sunday but wasn't able to find one. Too much instrumentation and too many divas trying to be the star when it's the song that should shine.

Her voice not unlike Bob Dylan's -- that is an acquired taste -- does have a unique quality. All good music must convey real emotion. 'and hers does. It just isn't convenient.

I agree. So what have been your new musical interests this past year or so? I've been getting into modern classical such as John Cage and Benjamin Britten, Brazilian music (have you heard Gal Costa or Caetano Veloso?) avant garde bands like Henry Cow, and prog bands like Soft Machine. It's been all artists of the past for me lately. EDIT: hold on. What does Portishead have to do with appreciating Billie Holiday?

I've been getting into modern classical such as John Cage and Benjamin Britten, Brazilian music (have you heard Gal Costa or Caetano Veloso?) avant garde bands like Henry Cow, and prog bands like Soft Machine. It's been all artists of the past for me lately. Unfortunately I have become stagnant musically. My poetry has become sluggish and uninspired...Post some links of your favorites of these you have listed. I would like to hear them... And I always heard a Billie Holliday influence in Beth Gibbons style and delivery. So I just now googled to see if anyone else had. I don't know if the following supports that. But here it is from a Rolling Stone commentary on "Dummy": www.sputnikmusic.com/review/1437/Portishead-Dummy/That's not to talk down Beth Gibbons or Geoff Barrow. Beth was the star turn when this album was released; her voice was soon being called 'the most beautiful ever', and was drawing comparisons with Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Dusty Springfield, and just about any female soul singer you'd care to mention. I think that's a little too superlative, but she's certainly got some voice on her - fragile, tender, and soulful. Dusty Springfield is a fairly good comparison, as is - with hindsight - Eva Cassidy. Her lyrics are a plus point, too. Geoff Barrow? Well, it's hard to tell where his input starts or stops, to be honest, but the band was his idea, and he has writer credits on every song, so he's not exactly dispensable.#419 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums Ever #95 on Q's Top 100 Albums Ever

I will. That reminds me though to ask about direct youtube (or whatever) links - I notice that you post the url to them rather than the video itself and am wondering if there is some particular reason for that. What I mean is, would you prefer that I posted the url links rather than the videos themselves? I can;t see any reason to not post the videos themselves (particularly since there is a youtube tab) but if you prefer they didn't be posted directly I won't.
I meant to mention this on the last post but forgot somehow about it. This is a combo of sad & hilarious. I typed in the wrong password and then when I went to enter it in again the verification box asked me to type in something to prove I wasn't a robot. OK that's pretty normal these days, but what flabbergasted me was that the verification code required was the slogan of an energy company! Things are very much out of whack!
And, if this option is available I've forgotten how to use it - is there a way to get an email when a topic you've posted in gets a subsequent post?

Let me double check. And BTW I missed your previous video post due to me thinking it was an advertisement. 'Post as you wish. I only copy and paste links because it is easy,

Yeah I like Beth Gibbons. I've only recently begun listening to Dusty Springfiield. I haven't heard Eva Cassidy but now she's on "the list."

Wow 3.6 million views... I don't see the magic, but yeah it's OK. That's got to be my favorite Lauper song, btw.

Al, years ago you introduced me to Steely Dan's Can't Buy A Thrill album, which I love. I'm still crazy about Do It Again (have you heard Tori Amos' rather sinister cover of this?), Kings and Midnite Cruiser. I really like the sound of Razor Boy which I just listened to on your playlist above. I've never explored any further than that album though. Bearing in mind the songs I especially like, is there any particular album of theirs you'd advise me delve into next?

Rarely do I enjoy a cover right away. And you are right about it being somber...I would say perhaps a dirge. But is really well done both musically and lyrically. Thanks, I do enjoy it (now at a crescendo) You might listen to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIJvrmgu6wgIgnore the video - it is unofficial but I could not find just the music. The guitar is unreal. And the song is unique and powerful Albums: Gaucho Katy Lied Countdown to Ecstasy Royal Scam Here is another favorite that exemplifies the muscial philosophy of their production style and skill: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkBfdjkxsSs
