No one has to say "goodbye" to anything. Adey, you can still use your avatar. Just open the gif in another window and save it to your desktop. Create a folder (like I have) on your desktop for Photobucket (or other host site) Images. Save it to that folder. Create an account at a host site and upload it there. Then, the host site will give you the http address to post in your profile or elsewhere.
I have been using it for ages, and most of my graphics have been from my own desktop, like the ones I use for holidays.
I wouldn't worry too much about others images. Many are displayed on these sites for these reasons. They don't mind your using it, just don't accept credit for a personally designed or scanned image, don't profit from its use, and don't hotlink to their site - upload it yourself. Use good judgement in what you take and from where. Many sites say "free images", or will tell you to request permission. If I remember correctly, Al even asked the owner over at Ran-Tan for permission to use the avatars a while back.
If you are having trouble with your avatar, Adey, I'll upload it for you and give you the address to use. Just let me know.

Call me an eejit, but this stuff is all new to me.. I had no idea that hotlinking deprived the original host of bandwidth. I will of course comply, so farewell to my avatar (I'll miss it). Me too. I just dumped 3 that I was fond of. And before I read Zan's post! maybe I should have waited. It's not like I haven't had them for over a year. And I don't think Gaffa or Ran-Tan has a bandwidth drain issue. However. I will not jeopardize incurring negative consequences here. I must mention, though, that we are relatively tame in our use of these links. Some sites have huge signature links etc. Yeah. What's the deal with those?

Kind offer Xan, and I thank you for it. However, I've taken the opportunity to use something original off my own website. Thanks again..

A man of your capacities will quickly rise above the Avatar problem, I have no doubt. I look forward to seeing how you (and everyone else here) deals with this little problem. My musical collaborator is the computer whizz - Without him, no website. Then I WOULD have been going cap in hand to Xan..

Just a thought.. what about all those hotlinked images used to illustrate posts in our archives? There must be hundreds..Adey, you can keep your avatar as long as you host it yourself. As for old posts, it's the avatars and sig's I'm concerned about. If you change it, then they change on all your old posts too.

The forums will loose some of the colour, but hey... we can still /write/ what we want, can we? (all within the limits of good taste etc. ofcourse)... so let's look at this from a positive side.. ok back to the issue of 'when will She release her new album, what will be the title and what will it sound like'

[/i][/quote] Can't you just download your avatar to your hardrive and then post it on an image hosting service, therefore elliminating the source - bandwidth issue? edit: Oops! Didn't see Lori's response to this

Sure, I know that now! But "onwards and upwards" as they say, "never look back" and all that good stuff.. I'm looking forward to seeing who takes the opportunity for a new look.

I, on the other hand, Have no website. Well, the offer still stands. Or I can talk you through it. You don't need a website, just register on www.photobucket.comYou can use anything you have saved on your desktop. And, as for rights to these images, unless these Kate Bush wesbites photographed her or designed the image themselves, I don't believe they have the rights either. As for me, the only one that is somewhat mine is the image of Peter & Kate - scanned from a large poster and reassembled personally for my signature, but I still don't own the rights to the image. I could just use some of my graphics or artwork, but there's nothing I'd like to use here for my avatar at the moment - Kate just seems right for now. Well, Lori, now you've gone and confused everyone. Are you happy now?! J/K ;D

Adey I have to say, I do like your new avatar - very interesting Thank you Lori - a piece of computer art created by my music collaborator and used as a graphic logo for our recent musical theatre show. It was done on a French computer programme called Vu d'Espirit. The original is animated, with the pyramid slowly tumbling whilst the rings are circling and the waves are in motion.. When we projected it onto a 65 square foot video screen, I couldn't take my eyes off it..
