After 5 years, how do you lose 2 goldfish on the same day? I suspect foul play.. George(named by my nephew) got real sick and Rhiannon (named by my sister--huge Stevie Nicks fan) followed suit---my sis believes there's a weird fish bond where Rhiannon just "let herself go". It was a very Shakespearian goldfish death, like Romeo and Juliet. They shared the same tank almost their whole life---they were feeder goldfish won at a carnival! It would be amazing if they last 5 months let alone 5 years! Just Friday I was making a joke that someday those fish were going to take over the world---and then this...

I absolutely love jolene, it's a great song. although the white stripes cover is a bit better than the original THE WHITE STRIPES COVERED JOLENE??? AWESOME! I did not know that. Must check it out. The White Stripes have been on my "to be checked out" list since they first came out---but finances are not what they used to be...

Ooh yes, I do like a bit of Rush. Had Sub divisions blazing around the house earlier today (saturday).

"Sexual Healing" (2 versions so far) Marvin Gaye and Ben Harper. It has been covered by U2 too (some other lesser know covers exist as well)
And because of Mat's early mention of Tracy Chapman, I've been listening to her a lot also......And - in so doing, was prompted to think about how much American blues and soul music has influenced British music in the past and possibly rekindled a spark in Kate Bush's new effort.
We know that Kate has admired the work of Stevie Wonder. She has won the acclaim of artists such as Maxwell, Outkast, Prince and Tricky. Now this may seem off the wall, but I could not help but notice how much pain and emotion was perceivable in the music of Ms Chapman as I listened today. I believe that the pain, suffering, emotion and tradition that is found in American black music, and to a similar degree in Appalachian 'folk' music, can not only jerk a tear on occasion, but it can moreso speak a clear truth. With all of the formulated and predictably emulated music going on; it may be that a renaissance of true feeling could be unleashed by the inspirations that we know are hidden in Kate's "Aerial. Specifically Elvis, Marvin Gaye (granted, only a KotM b-side, but..), but who knows what else is in store. Zydeco is there we've been told. And we know there will be some strings and orchestrated pieces. However, I can't help but notice that if I can be moved by the soulful truth in the kind of music that has 'real emotional quality' from the tradition of poor and oppressed people; then I suspect that Kate has tapped into it in a big way. I hope so!
