Speaking of great songs and great albums.... What have you been spinning lately? Aside from Kate Bush . I got a whole lot of great CD's I have been waiting for as gifts recently, so I am excited to be exploring whole new areas musically. Anyone been exploring some new artists they'd like to share. I'll see if there's any bites before I ramble on...

I've been listening to new and old of late, having finally bought a replacement turntable - I've been existing only on CD for several years up till now!
Mindy Smith has been played to death, a record 5 weeks in my car CD player and prised out only a month ago.. Her debut album is now as familiar to me as TKI!
Bill Nelson's latest independent release, " Satellite Songs " (don't look for it in the States - I'll edit this soon with a link to a free down loadable track). I saw Bill (founder member of Be Bop Deluxe) 2 weeks ago in small club playing with a scratch band called The Lost Satellites. His first tour for 20 years - stunning, one of the world's greatest (lost) electric guitar players, an innovative songwriter and ignored by record companies everywhere..
Yes - Drama, after reading Grimm's contribution to the Great Albums/Great Songs thread.

I've been listening to new and old of late, having finally bought a replacement turntable - I've been existing only on CD for several years up till now! How can that be?! I have never been without one, and I am only from the tail end of the vinyl era! Nearly my whole collection consists of material never available on CD, and probably never will be. That's why we invested in a CD player/burner for our audio equipment. Mindy Smith has been played to death, a record 5 weeks in my car CD player and prised out only a month ago.. Her debut album is now as familiar to me as TKI! I keep hearing her name around lately. What do you specifically like about her so much? What's her style? Bill Nelson's latest independent release, " Satellite Songs " (don't look for it in the States - I'll edit this soon with a link to a free down loadable track). I saw Bill (founder member of Be Bop Deluxe) 2 weeks ago in small club playing with a scratch band called The Lost Satellites. His first tour for 20 years - stunning, one of the world's greatest (lost) electric guitar players, an innovative songwriter and ignored by record companies everywhere.. A little lost on me for now, so no comment. ;D Yes - Drama, after reading Grimm's contribution to the Great Albums/Great Songs thread. Yeah, the "Yes" thing has been going around a lot here lately too. My husband is a progressive rock fan, and recently met Roger Dean who signed a few albums, which subsequently led to a huge phase. I'm learning to appreciate it for now. I like the cover of Relayer, though.

I'll look some of these up to get a gist of where you're at. And I won't comment on the Faith No More? But I do like Enigma. As for me, I'll get back to you.

Thanks Xan.
Of course I've had turntables in the past - after all, my wife & I have several hundred vinyl albums between us. The last one I had was integrated with a system, that started to break down component by component! The deck was the first to go. I finally switched to dedicated seperates but the last thing I acquired was the new turntable. Having all that music available but with nothing to play it on... well you can imagine! Our CD collection is only a 5th of the vinyl stack.
Mindy Smith is I guess country tinged thoughtful emotional pop music. Her songs are personal experience stuff, played simply and with great emotional delivery. Dolly Parton loves her apparently. Honest, few frills, no computers (not a criticism - I use 'em all the time in music). Her voice is gorgeous (at least to these ears) and her melodies are exquisite. She's only released one album - acquire, I promise you won't regret.
Yeah, Bill Nelson is a UK thing really I suppose - I will find a link for a freedownload song off his last album and post it here.
Regards,

As above, Bill Nelson, guitarist, singer/songwriter, poet, visionary & hyperdreamer.. Download " Times of Our Lives " here, from the independently released Satellite Songs album: billnelson.com/rwbv/index.htm

Dave Brubec boxed set - I pinch all of my Dad's Brubeck stuff. He introduced me to Mulligan & Desmond, and I love Brubeck's playing. Nasri, Adams & Jaojoby got by me I'm afraid. Hey AT, do you still drum? For yourself or do you ever play live? Tell us your musical history (if you would care to do so)..

Well I've been getting into Toto recently - does anyone like them? Bought "Toto IV" and "The Seventh One" this week - "Africa" is one of my favourite songs, I love it! I've also been exploring some French artists more, especially Zazie whose quirkiness reminds me of Kate, I wouldn't be surprised if she's been influenced by Ms Bush. Most people seem to have been!

Toto are/were a fine band I agree. Most people remember the big singles Africa, Rosanna, Hold the Line etc but their albums are where the magic is. David Pache is an excellent keyboard player whose skills I much admire. Guitarist Lukather of course is brilliant also. The only thing to say about the drummer is what a loss, and to hope that his replacement stays out of the Garden..
Good luck working your way through their back catalogue, and listen out for my favourite - "I'll Be Over You"

Here's a few interesting facts for you Sto. The Toto song "Rosanna" was written for the actress Rosanna Arquette (sister to Patricia and David, and woman with the "sh*t in her face from Pulp Fiction, also star of Desperatedly Seeking Susan with Madonna) when she was involved with the singer. The Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes" was also written for her during their relationship. Must be some woman! And Toto did the soundtrack for the David Lynch film Dune. Strange that they did it, but it's great. I've been listening to a lot of French music, too Sto. But I think mine were more likely to be an influence on Kate that the opposite, since they are before her time. ;D I'll have to look up Zazie. Goo to see you around Sto!

I assume you cared not to.. Again, this is regretably another post I had missed. I still play, however not professionally. There are so many great muscians in Nashville that to persue that direction would have surely meant starvation. However I do have an extensive array of percussion instruments. A full kit of Yamaha's with double kickers, Sabian, Zildjian and Bosphorus cymbals, congos a small steel drum, wood tiapanis, chimes and various latin drums, blocks and bells. I play for personal satisfaction, exercize and stress relief. My gigs have consisted of small clubs and private affairs. However I am not adverse to jamming with friends who come to me. I'm not about to move my stuff otherwise.

Yes, that small matter of making a living gets us every time..
I know where you're coming from. The truth - certainly in my case - is I wouldn't have made the grade. Maybe I would now, but I needed to be where I am now as a musician, about 25 years ago.. Still such is life.
Whatever, I'm pleased that you still play. I abhor wasted talent.

Just dug this one up... This is what we were listening to in October and November. Things get buried pretty quickly lately. ;D ;D Maybe I'll change the title from "Your Personal Playlist" to something more along the lines of your recent music.
