I hadn't heard the siren. I need to listen to Kate on headphones occasionally to pick up these minor details (special effect listening notwithstanding!). I much prefer not to use them - I like the sound of 'space' around my recordings which you don't get with speakers strapped to your head.
Nice observations on the song there Sto.

I see it as a love song. The guy is having an affair,or working too much, some type of disconnect.
Top of the city, maybe a metaphor for a happier time, The sirens-danger all around their love.
IMHO

Top of the City Again featuring .John Giblin's unusual high pitched bass line, this track has a very theatrical approach and emphasises the power of Kate's voice to deliver an emotional ballad. "The impression is of being high up in the clouds over a city, and originally there was more rhythm section, but a lot of it was taken off to emphasise the airiness of the track. That left the bass part very prominent so that was put through a delay to repeat it and emphasise its effect." The track was one of the first recorded for the album, but changed an awful lot during the studio sessions. "Nigel Kennedy features on violin and his parts were recorded on analogue on 1990. There was a complete metamorphosis in the editing process and we lost a lot of the cymbals, which made the track sound quite sparse but a lot more powerful." I've come to notice a lot of people really dislike, or are neutral towards The Red Shoes album. Honestly, I love, The Red Shoes, all of it. Even you disliked the rest of the album (which is unlikely), Top of the City, and Moments of Pleasure should be enough to redeem it.

Song of Solomon is probably the only remake on Director's Cut that I liked better than the original...

I love The Song of Solomon 2011, though I really miss the three 'I'll do it for you's that are missing. That's my favourite section of the song, and it's just not quite the same! The reverb on her voice throughout the song is gorgeous, and adds a sort of expansive quality. My favourite remake though is Lily which just plain ROCKS on Director's Cut! These were also my 2 favourites on Red Shoes (along with the heartbreaking You're The One).
I do like the remake of Top of the City. Her voice growls through it and again that reverb is prevalent. I think the DIrector's Cut version comes to life for me a bit more than the original - though that's more to do with the original's tinny production that anything!

I just voted for Song of Solomon on the Red Shoes poll (although it's really a tie with Moments of Pleasure). --Paul--
