Some moments that I've had Some moments of pleasure
I think about us lying Lying on a beach somewhere I think about us diving Diving off a rock, into another moment
The case of George the Wipe Oh God I can't stop laughing This sense of humour of mine It isn't funny at all Oh but we sit up all night Talking about it
Just being alive It can really hurt And these moments given Are a gift from time
On a balcony in New York It's just started to snow He meets us at the lift Like Douglas Fairbanks Waving his walking stick But he isn't well at all The buildings of New York Look just like mountains through the snow
Just being alive It can really hurt And these moments given Are a gift from time Just let us try To give these moments back To those we love To those who will survive
And I can hear my mother saying "Every old sock meets an old shoe" Isn't that a great saying? "Every old sock meets an old shoe" Here come the Hills of Time
Hey there Maureen
Hey there Bubba Dancing down the aisle of a plane
'S Murph, playing his guitar refrain
Hey there Teddy Spinning in the chair at Abbey Road
Hey there Michael Do you really love me?
Hey there Bill Could you turn the lights up?

Hey Gina. Xanadu I'm sure will respond here later, but I'll put in my 2 cents worth. To me these "moments given are a gift from god" or the time you spend with a loved one should be cherished. The gravity of these moments may not be realized when they're happening; but, they are shared by lover's. So it could be that the bond is recognizing these moments with another.

Gina, I think its worth thinking about this song more in terms of loss and regret. Svengolly is on the right lines I think, the good times people spend together are the moments of pleasure, appreciated when that person is lost (has died).
There are specific references to death and regret, if you know your Kate. "Smurf, playing his guitar refrain" refers to KB's friend and guitar player Alan Murphy (you'll see him credited on some of the albums) who died (AIDs) I think. "Hey there Bill, would you turn the lights up" refers to Bill Duffield, a lighting engineer, who died on KB's concert tour in 1979. There are the references to her Mum, Hannah Bush who died while Kate was making the album, "and I can hear my Mother saying etc" You'll notice that the album is dedicated to her. There are several other references to people (presumably lost) who I just don't know, Michael Maureen Teddy, maybe some other board members know who these are.
So there you have it, hope it helps.

There are specific references to death and regret..... Sheila, I don't think anyone but Kate or a close friend knows who "George the Wipe" was, but apparently he did something hilarious and probably, at least a bit, embarassing. There are many personal references in this song that make it very poignant. Others over time have identified them in different articles and interviews (to answer the remaining ones that Adey mentioned) Kate had once referred to John Kelly, herself and John Barrett (Abbey Road engineer) as "Andy Pandy", "Loopy Lou" and "Teddy" (from a children's program) respectively. Maureen was her aunt. And Michael was the late British director Michael Powell, whose 1948 film about an ill-fated ballerina, was at least partly the inspiration for "Red Shoes" O.K. I can't just sit here and do nothing. ;D

A few more blanks filled - I've just spent half an hour reading articles on the excellent Gaffaweb.
Bubba, refers to Gary Hurst (long time dance partner). The Balcony in New York section refers to Kate's meeting with Michael (Red Shoes) Powell, veteran British film director.
Hey, I wanted to know this stuff even if nobody else did!
