Pray God you can cope I stand outside this woman's work This woman's world Ooh, it's hard on the man Now his part is over Now starts the craft of the father
I know you have a little life in you yet I know you have a lot of strength left I know you have a little life in you yet I know you have a lot of strength left
I should be crying, but I just can't let it show I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things I should've said That I never said All the things we should've done That we never did All the things I should've given But I didn't
Oh, darling, make it go Make it go away
Give me these moments back Give them back to me Give me that little kiss Give me your hand
(I know you have a little life in you yet I know you have a lot of strength left I know you have a little life in you yet I know you have a lot of strength left.)
I should be crying, but I just can't let it show I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things we should've said That were never said All the things we should've done That we never did All the things that you needed from me All the things that you wanted for me All the things that I should've given But I didn't
Oh, darling, make it go away Just make it go away now

Answer these two questions for me: What movie includes this song? and What artist recently covered it?

Kate's Dad told me she wrote the song in 10 minutes at the piano. Its all in the book and it really happened, not just a dream!

Apologies for X-posting... I posted this on the General board as well...
My wife - my best friend and lover - died recently and I chose this song as a way to express my love and sadness at losing her, at her funeral.
The words seemed to echo the fact that I now had to become the person and father that maybe I wasn't very good at being in better times. "Now starts the craft of the father".
It also reflected how futile my help for her during her last hours was - I wanted to give her my strength and life and so on but it wasn't working. I wanted her pain to go away - eventually it did.
I cry easily and I guess I asked for it but I wept silent buckets during the funeral. I wanted the song to stop as it was hurting me so much to think what I was losing and that I was frightened for my future without her. But the song is so beautifully given to us and I needed to feel that she could hear my thoughts through the lyrics - too late perhaps but meant no less strongly.
As I looked round once, I did spot that I wasn't alone. I only hope no-one felt I was being self indulgent.
I don't kow if this is a "popular" song for these circumstances...
I only know Kate wrote a pearl for her, I miss her so much.
Love and peace
Chris

I'm very sorry for your wife, chips . "this woman's work" is a very appropriate song to play at a funeral, for me it reflects the fear of losing the one you love or anybody who has been close to you. although kate wrote this song in about a movie i allways felt she wrote it about her mother, that died only in 1992, but i think that also in 1989 her condition wasn't so good and kate showed in this song her worries about her condition

My heart goes out to you chips. If Kate's song provides some comfort I am sure it would move her to know.

My wife - my best friend and lover - died recently and I chose this song as a way to express my love and sadness at losing her, at her funeral. I cannot express to you how much your words moved me. I am humbled by the fact that you'd want to share this with us. I hope we can be of some comfort to you. This was my introduction to Kate, and have always held it close to my heart. I had often considered this use of it myself, before I was a Kate fan, and would be flattered to have any association with it. If your posts shows me anything, it's that you are a deeply loving and compassionate individual, and I am sure anyone who cares about you knows how you feel for them. Please feel welcomed and at home here. Xanadu

Hi, this beautiful song has just featured as the title song for an ITV1 drama in the UK called " Walk Away and i stumble", about a marrigae that breaks up due to the husband falling for another woman who is dying of cancer. it was a truly touching drama and i couldn't get this song out of my head, i would go as far as saying it is a really haunting song, but in a good way

Welcome nikkiuk.
Yes I saw that too. Amazing how a well crafted song can raise the emotional stakes in film. And This Woman's Work never fails to raise my short hairs even on it's own..

Yes, the song is haunting, in a wonderful and magical way... I thought it was really sad when I saw the NSPCC ad with it in the background. Actually, the song is about childbirth...
chips/Chris: I am now crying. I'm so sorry for your loss and I think that it is the most wonderful song you could have chosen.

I know what you mean about the crying bucketloads! It was written for a film about birth was it? and yet it fits death too? I personally don't like Maxwells cover of this at all but then I often find that I prefer whichever version I hear first. I don't think I can say anything that could adequately express the beauty of this song. Certainly one of my favourites. Sometimes I think Kat eis at her most brilliant when it's just herself and the piano, no other instruments. Beauticfuly, beautiful song. The words, vocals, music, everything - it's spot on.

I agree entirely - TWW is one of Kate's finest songs. It's overwhelming.. that emotional intensity hits you with something akin to a hammer blow. Volume maxed out and in a quiet dark room, the desperate sweet savagery of the extraordinary KB backing vocals raise the short hairs on my neck every time. It's almost too much..
