Out in the garden There's half of a heaven And we're only bluffing We're not ones for busting through walls
But they've told us Unless we can prove That we're doing it We can't have it all
He's gonna wangle A way to get out of it She's an excuse And a witness who'll talk when he's called
But they've told us Unless we can prove That we're doing it We can't have it all We can't have it all
"I caught a glimpse of a god, all shining and bright"
Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slo-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in Gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you Can I have it all
I try to get nearer But as it gets clearer There's something appears in the way It's a plank in me eye
With a camel Who's trying to get through it Am I doing it? Can I have it all now?
I pull out the plank and say "Thank you for yanking me back To the fact that there's Always something to distract"
But sometimes it's hard To know if I'm doing it right Can I have it all? Can I have it all now? We can't have it all
"We all have a dream...maybe"
Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slo-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in Gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you Can I have it all
I won't open boxes That I am told not to I'm not a Pandora I'm much more like
That girl in the mirror Between you and me She don't stand a chance of getting anywhere at all Not anywhere at all No, not a thing She can't have it all
"Mother, where are the angels? I'm scared of the changes"
Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slo-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in Gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you Can I have it all

Okay, I don't see any postings here -- I'm disappointed. Over the years I've had many arguments with friends and checked British dictionaries and the Web to figure out what "gaffa" is. Can you help?!

According to "Gaffaweb" (the Kate Bush Bible as far as I'm concerned) it refers to 'Gaffer's' tape, similiar to duct tape, used to secure cables on sounstages etc,

Right, is anyone up to explaining the whole camal with the plank thing again? I know Lori doesn't get it either...the explanations in the past have always lost me though Sorry for being difficult! You're not being difficult. I speculate the camel thing is a biblical reference: "It is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven" Although not necessarily relevant here, I would like to point out that the needle referred in the Bible is not the kind you sew with, but rather an opening in the outer wall of a town just big enough for an adult human to crawl through, but not big enough to ride your camel into. Anyway, what I believe Kate is saying is that reaching your goals requires so many factors going just right, and just like a camel trying to get through the eye of a needle, the factors involved seem impossible. Even if these factors fall into place, you need to focus on them to make your goals a reality. But it is hard to focus on these factors because there is "always something to distract". The metaphor of having a distraction like a plank in your eye is used to show how hard it really is to stay focused on your goals, especially when you deem them impossible even when focused upon. Well, that's my stab at it. (shrug)

Sheila, thank you! I think I get it no - or at least get your interpretation, as I'm sure there are a few out there (it wouldn't be a Kate song if there weren't a few interpretations, right?). The Biblical reference really helped! And I agree with what Kate's saying completely. It's so easy to procrastinate when something important needs to be done. It also explains why I'm on here when I'm meant to be doing Politics homework

You're not being difficult. I speculate the camel thing is a biblical reference: "It is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven" That is from Mark 2:10, indeed a new testament reference. I have also read that there was two meanings for the Aramic word for camel (Gamlo) in the 1st century. "Gamloas" is defined as a thick rope used to bind ships. Since Jesus used fishermen as his disciples; then this analogy would have made sense to them. What Kate I think is referring to is that greed will hold you back from attaining true peace (happiness/Zen/Karma or whatever) Being suspended in "Gaffa" (gaffer's tape) is a reinforcement of this concept. The other biblical reference is from Matthew 7:10. It refers to "how can you see the splinter in your brother's eye, when there is a plank in your own?" The parable is partially that the plank is a distraction. It is hypocritical to judge others by a different standard, So remove your own obstacles before you can see your way clear, or even help your fellow man. Ditto. We're both right

My understanding is that "Gaffa" means what water means in "Hello earth" & "RUTH". "Gaffa" is what keeps her from reaching her highest spiritual state, her weakness, or her temptation... its a state of non progresment, her goal is that of spiritual nature. "Gaffa" is the place she is suspended in. She's saying that although it may seem she has progressed to a certain level, but then she realizes that where she is, is far from where she thought she'd be, she says "Thank you for taking me back to the fact that theres always something to distract" Meaning that something made her lose her way, and is thanking for the awareness given. Catherines spiritual growth lead up to the Dreaming, and peaked in the "Hounds of love" second side:"The ninth wave". Both "The Dreaming" and "The Hounds of love" were points in her life where she learnt many things and obviously grew wise, and this shows within her music. Sites which refer to Kate's lyrics and the conception of them have been various. Especially the ones regarding "The Hounds of love". (Rephrased) BB Wiccan High Priest

"Suspended in Gaffa" is my favorite of her videos.
(Rewritten altogether) Truly sorry for this one. It was so silly. Lets protect her.

I always thought Gaffa meant work, she has far to much work, of many sense, music, learning, and that she feels pulled down, stopped by them, never new why. Maybe she regrets no taking A levels? Though she did leave school with 11 O Levels. Maybe her mind is so busy with these things she cannot focus on the spirtual side, that she is usspended and there is too much hard work for her to do, but if she can't, then she can't have it all. But I'm probabley just taking it on a far to literal sense, though that's how I always think things are.

Regarding:"The Dreaming"(The album) Remember this is all coming out of one person:Catherine!! I see conections between the songs "Suspended in Gaffa", "Leave it open" and "Get out of my house". She shows immaturity, thurst, seeking , growth, enlightment ,the traps that come with it, and the surpassing of evil through wisdom. (Rephrased)

The beauty of much art is the individual truth it may impart to those with creative minds. There may be a myriad of interpretations. Respectfully, in regard to the following quote, it would be difficult say with any certainty how Ms Bush intended us to take them. It is seldom 'wrong' to be open to alternative or hidden meanings. e.g. Regarding the Dreaming(The Album) ...The meanings of the songs Are pieced together,it would be wrong to take them seperatly. Remember this is all coming out of one person:Catherine!! This is entirely valid to put forward as opinion. Unless Kate wrote this, then let's be open to other views as well......also: This is insightful, yet, in fairness, presumes to have Kate's intentions identified. I also have feelings and interpretations about ''The Dreaming'' I'd like to think mine have merit as well Also I would prefer continue exploring the revelations. I, as many, see the references to a blindness of her faults. But her only wisdom seems to be realizing she's in a rut. Her desire to have it all and then not understanding why she's not happy does not appear, to me, that she has the answers yet. I am not discounting your observations. 'Only leaving room for more discussion and insight from others.
