In light of recent topics being discussed in this forum; I was motivated to share some inspirational music from some favorite trailblazers. This trip starts with: "Valley of the Shadows from Bob James "One" This powerful nine plus minute epic mini-drama sets the tone. It begins with unsettling clamour followed by powerful and foreboding horns. We are taken through chaos by erie avant-garde quitar breaks. The fear and anxiety build to a boiling point. The release and comfort comes with blaring horns heralding the tune "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" (written by none other than Martin Luther) A perfect armour for coming battles...This must be played loud!... "Breathing" by Kate Bush from "Never For Ever" The chaotic break in this song is reminiscent of the begining of the Bob James piece. Fear and uncertainty are themes from the words and music of a young Kate Bush. "The Times They Are A Changin'" written by Bob Dylan from "Fires at Midnight" by "Blackmore's Night" Unrest and the world getting smaller is brought here to you by a sweeter voice than Dylan's. "Pull Out The Pin" by Kate Bush from "The Dreaming" A clash of culture and spirtual truth. A cathardic primal scream of "I love life!" "The Logical Song" from "Supertramps's" greatest hits. A conservative swing in the world's ideological socio-political climate is represented by this selection. "Pineapple Heart" from "Ten From Little Worlds" by Bela Fleck. A completive instrumental that shows the marriage of unconvential thinking. Jazz with melody and bango. How appropriate. You'll; actually fing it enjoyable. How will you accept others if you will not listen? "Jig of Life" from "Hounds of Love" by Kate Bush. "Come on let me live" is the cry. Fear of new ideas can be deadly to the unenlightened. "Mystic's Dream" from Loreena McKennett's "The Mask and the Mirror" An exposure to Celtic and Moorish mysticism. We must not forget tradition and the journey of others as we meet on the roadway. "The Morning Fog" by Kate Bush from "Hounds of Love" I'm spirtually moved by now, how about you? "All Souls Night" from the "Visit" by Loreena McKennett. This song is spirtually unifying and culturally enlightening. I'll end it here and await your comments. Thank you. I love you all.

I'll go back later and clean up the URL listed above. In the meantime you can hear samples at Amazon for all of these but Loreena McKennett. Just do a keyword search with the song title and artist. Ms McKennett's music can be found @ www.quinlanroad.com There are extensive sound and video files to be found.

I am familiar with all of these except the Loreena McKennett and Bob James stuff, which I'll look out for.
Logical Song - love it, Supertramp were one of my fave bands. They lost a lot when Roger left. Crime of the Century is in my top 10 albums from the 70s.
Kate Bush - now who's this then? (no comment necessary)
Blackmores Night - being a Purple/Rainbow fan from more years back than I care to recall, I approached BN with some trepidation. I needn't have worried. I think they're superb. Strangely enough, I haven't heard this track - Fires at Midnight is the one album of BN that I don't have. I saw them in Bham late last year and was so impressed. Maybe its because I am a classical guitarist myself. A lot of his Rainbow work pointed in this direction in retrospect. Yes Candice Night's voice is so sweet, and she is so much like a more tuneful Stevie Nicks. If you haven't heard it yet, look out for Ghost of a Rose, the latest album. I think its their best, certainly their most consistent. The title track is a nice homage to Elgar's Cello Concerto.
nb Guess its my age, but I still call CDs albums...

AT, forgot to ask - how did you stumble across Blackmores Night? They are hardly heavily promoted..

Thanks for the reply Adey. I'll share more later (after "Super Bowl") but I ran across "Blackmore Night's" at "Borders" The name made me curious as to the members. Also the cover reminded me of Celtic influence (which I love) I was pleasantly surprised. The song seemed to fit my theme quite well. You must check out Loreena McKennett. Just click on the URL I provided above. The Bob James number you must also try to listen to in it's entirety. It's worth a one dollar download fee for sure. (or the UK equiv.)

Would any care to add to this list? If you don't listen, you're missing one of the better playlists here.

This playlist is quite good, Al. "Valley of the Shadows is eerie, and a bit strange, but the blaring horns that belt out "Fortress" makes for an inspiring ending. The songs flow very fluidly in theme as well. (Sheila, I know what you're thinking, you too Zan ;D)

"Valley of the Shadows" is quite disturbing isn't it? The guitar squeaks sound like evil cackles...I'd more than just the 1 minute clip. Very atmospheric. (The other clips from that album are also rather excellent. I should investigate further). I immediately clicked with "Breathing" the first time I heard it. A nightmare scenario which could so easily come true. The climax at the end (I see similarlities with "VOTS" too Al') is a musical masterpiece. She sounds so desperate. "The Times Are Changing" was interesting, but not really my sort of thing. I'm not usually a Supertramp fan, but I love "The Logical Song". Musically and lyrically inspiring and excellent. I'm in love with "Pineapple Heart". It's beautifully relaxing and tranquil, but at the same time moving and emotional. Brilliant! Also loved "Snatchin'". "Jig Of Life" is extraordinarily inspirational and fresh. It can lift you up, as it is meant to do to the drowning woman. The lyrics are very well thought-through and interesting, and "I put this moment....here" is so simple, yet so profound. The rregular beat of the drum during the jig always gives me something to listen out for. "The Mystic's Dream" and "All Soul's Night" are currently downloading, so opinions coming in a bit!

Thank you Sto'. It makes putting the lists together worthwhile when I know people are going to listen. After you finish, I'd like to here how you think the theme worked. Play the Loreena McKennett tracks loud. It will remind you of a worship service. "VOTS" should also be played loud at the end. I'm glad you liked it.

That's not what you thought I was thinking was it?

Off the subject for a bit here, but some future input may come from my recent music shopping spree. CD's are really dropping in price here. "Media Play" has hundreds of titles (not all crap either) marked down from $11.95 to 4.95 each. This weekend they were 3 for 10 bucks (sorry UK, what does a 'buck' mean there?) Also, if you spent $50.00, you received an extra $10.00 dollars to spend (coupon) So I got 16 CD's for $52.00! And these are not 'used'. Check it out * Bob Marley, Sinead O'Connor, Hooverphonic, The Cult, 2 by Deep Purple, Patsy Cline, Mozart. Tenores En Vino, Skinny Puppy, The Cure, Sneaker Pimps. Groove Radio (compl. w/ Chemical Bros, Chrystal Method etc etc!!), SNL Vol's I and II (with Paul Simon, Sting, Clapton, Annie Lennox, Nirvana, Bowie, Elvis Costello and on and on...The production values are awesome and these are one-of-a-kind performances!!) finally with my coupon I bought "Elephant" by White Stripes for 11.95 minus ten dollars. What a deal!! So expect to hear some of these on upcoming lists. Meanwhile listen to the current selections ....and say something! You don't want to offend me do you?
