Al, you put so much work into this, I feel really disappointed I don't have time to appreciate it.
I do agree though that Kate hasbeen a tremendous influence.

I'd like to add another link here. This artist is as close to Kate (at least on this video) than any other performer I've ever heard. Check her out and please comment. www.fundeling.com/shows/ledge.movThe video is small and the lighting poor; but the audio is spendid.

I never really paid much attention to Milla Jovovich except to see her in a movie every once in a while. She has got a very good voice and I enjoy listening to her. Very Kate influenced indeed.

Thanks August! Don't forget to check out the link to Susan Court. Tell me if she doesn't sound almost exactly like Kate.

It seems as though this topic is being read, but hopefully you guys are listening to the tracks. If you're not, you're missing some good music and video. Sheila, have you tried listening at a internet cafe or at a friends house? Thanks everyone, I'll comment on any response.

I'm still waiting. ;D You know I'm working on in... just trying to digest everything, at least the ones I can play (my ongoing struggle with the media players on this machine ) Just to let you know I have been thinking about this: Consider the similarities between the covers of Tori's and Kate's debut albums. This is no coincidence... Little Earthquakes images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002IT2.01.LZZZZZZZ.gifThe Kick Inside images.amazon.com/images/P/B000005JH5.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgFor those of you who may not be aware (or have other cover art) Kate Bush is inside a wooden box too. If possible, check out the back cover of "Kate Bush - A Visual Documentary" by Kevin Cann & Sean Mayes for alternate photos from that session. One can see she is in nearly the same box! Any comments... I have also noticed a similarity with the photography used for the albums. Highly unusual pictures, sexy but extremely well done and personal. Also, some of the same female artists who have sighted Kate Bush as an influence, have mentioned Peter Gabriel. Even Kate herself on NFE - "To Peter Gabriel, for opening the windows." Sinead O'Connor on "Am I Still Your Girl?" - "To the Angel Gabriel" in the dedication (who she was in a relationship with at the time). And Sarah McLachan on the B-side of "Steaming" (which happens to be a live cover of "Solsbury Hill") - "Thanks to Peter Gabriel, for all his inspiration." Gabriel also helped the career of Paula Cole and Laurie Anderson. Do you think he has somehow influenced this direction female rock has taken by encouraging them to be more courageous? Allowing them to be integral parts of his music? Bringing world music and other influences to the forefront? A fearless quality of incorporating outrageous performances/lyrics/music with a highly emotive and personal theme, without falling into too much sentimentality? I will work on the Kate Bush influences as soon as possible, but I wanted to add my thoughts so far here. I am also consulting my Women in Rock anthology for other quotes and theories!

I had never noticed the similarity of the Kate and Tori album covers; but, it looks more than coincidential. I wonder if Kate ever really acknowledges Tori Amos' contributions. Tori was a bit insensitive with the 'there's no mouse, stop screaming' comment about Kate. I think Kate has too much class to openly discuss her opinions of other people; but, I believe she is fairly fragile (was that oxymoronic?)
Also, I don't doubt that those who site Kate as an influence, also acknowledge Peter Gabriel. After all, they're so similar in creativety. Kate, I think, was initially more influenced by her brothers, which laid the groundwork for her interest in, and influence by, Peter Gabriel. The experimental nature of both, I beleive was inherent. It was and is a symbiotic relationship. Gabriel indeed was an influence; but, I think Kate and the other female artists you sited, enjoyed his affirmation and collaboration, but in the end, it was each artist individually that filtered and sculpted the energy.
Does the 'Women in Rock' anthology mention Ricki Lee Jones? I thought of her when you mentioned women's influence and Sarah McClachlan (Lilith Fair etc) Ms Jones has produced at least one album with an all-female crew. Engineers, gaffers, technical staff etc. I think she and Jane Siberry are a couple of bright-lights that I have not mentioned before. God knows I've recognized a lot of women artists on this board. But, Jane Siberry is a remarkable song writer as is Ricki Lee. Sensual, almost erotic at times and then conversely theological and conventional. What do you think?

Here's a preview of the coming topic for discussion and playlist. Harvest, Horror and All Hallow's Eve Autumn is my favorite season of the year. It represents bounty, change and family. It is also the time of celebrastion of the macabre.
The holiday season begins with Halloween. This is a favorite time for me because of the beautiful colors (The rolling hills of Tennessee are wonderfully colorful..) The smells, the nip in the air, it's all good. Thanksgiving, football and the Christmas season are all ahead. So with this in mind, Be prepared to share what Scares you, what you're thankful for. and what you want from SantaClaus. ;D
