In light of how this group seems to be a bit 'outside the realm' on occasion; I was thinking that it would be interesting if more people thought like we did. In this thread, we will assume that we* are all survivors of a post-apocalyptic 'Breathing' scenario. Our group and ten others must repopulate and shape the new world. There are only ten other survivors (Ms Bush is a part of 'our' group ) Who would you guys chose and why? I'll give you my selections and reasons after hearing some or your's. * those of us with 500 or more posts

OK , the rest of you guys are going to be analytical and philosophical here; I will endeveor to be selfish and superficial. Since you brought up repopulating the planet, it would be foolish to deny that sex appeal must be a factor. However, grace, intellect, talent, charm, culture, diversity, and vitality are also just as important. All of these components determine sex appeal. However they will also serve as a good foundation for our brave new world. My list covers all of these factors. (I thought about Bill Gates, but.... ) Isabelle Adjani Catherine Deneauve Sophie Marceau Jennifer Connelly Sade Nicole Kidman Elle McPherson Catherine Zeta Jones Lucy Lui Gisele Bundchen

You're idea had me think of this song. Actually one of my faves (did I ever mention I was a Jefferson fan?) Anyway an alternate theme song to our experience. Kate's Breathing: the before & this: the morning after. This is an epic song in my opinion. Really worth seeking if you've never heard it. Maybe I'll find a good link and add it here. Three members of the group ( Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, and Marty Balin) wrote (along with David Crosby) and sing parts in harmony (appear in Orange). "Wooden Ships" If you smile at me you know I will understand 'Cause that is something everybody everywhere does In the same languageI can see by your coat my friend that you're from the other side There's just one thing I got to know Can you tell me please who won?You must try some of my purple berries I been eating them for six or seven weeks now Haven't got sick onceProbably keep us both aliveWooden ships on the water very free and easy Easy you know the way it's supposed to be Silver people on the shoreline leave us be Very free and easySail away where the morning sun goes highSail away where the wind blows sweet and young birds fly Take a sister by her hand Lead her far from this barren land Horror grips us as we watch you die All we can do is echo your anguished cry and Stare as all you human feelings die We are leaving You don't need us No, you don't need us...Go and take a sister by her hand Lead her far from this foreign land Somewhere where we might laugh again We are leaving You don't need usSailing ships on the water very free and easy Easy you know the way it's supposed to be Silver people on the shoreline leave us be Very free and gone...Go ride the music... go ride the music... I'm riding...[/color] I'm riding the music... So, now I pick my top 10 people to repopulate the planet with, right?

(I thought about Bill Gates, but.... ) Thank you, since I don't think I could if we were the last two. Catherine Deneuve Sophie Marceau Now, even as a woman, I'd want them along, if you know what I mean Excellent choices Sven. I'm sure Al meant for something a little more serious, but I like your candor. ;D Hey, speaking of post-apocalyptic issues, ever seen a Twilight Zone episode entitled "Two"? It stars a very young Charles Bronson and Elizabeth Montgomery (Bewitched). The two are from opposing forces and languages but must learn to work together to survive.

Kate's Breathing: the before & this: the morning after. This is an epic song in my opinion. Really worth seeking if you've never heard it. I don't remember you mentioning being a J A fan. ; I have not see these lyrics before. The comparison is in the spirit of how this thread could develop. (as opposed to the hump-fest that Sven has in mind. ) Yes. Keep in mind Kate will have Doug neutered. Since Sven actually does raise some legitimate points; that is not exactly what I had in mind. Instead of waiting, below are some candidates from which to discuss how our new civilization would develop. In fact, I will include one from Sven's list that Zan has pre-approved. I too will chose all women. Each of us can nominate anyone, We can narrow it down to 10 based on voting after discussion. For intellectual stimulation: Julia Kristeva and Adrian Piper Politics and controversy: Hilary Clinton and Condoleeza RiceHumor and satire: Sarah Silverman and Arianna HuffingtonArts: Martha Argerich and Sophie Marceau Care and nurturing: An attractive female surgeon and a beautiful Geisha who knows accupuncture

Wow this is a toughie - nice idea though.
At this moment in time I'd pick the following and offer appropriate reasons:
In no particular order
1] Kate Bush. Because her gifts are too valuable to lose and need to be passed on to the next generation. Because she is an exotic and desireable woman (sorry)! I know kate would already be in our group, but we need her twice in case one of her fell out of the lifeboat!
2] Cate Blanchet. Because she is a formidable actress whose chameleon like qualities could bewitch and entertain any group of partners.
3] Dianne Abbott. British lady MP. Her humanity and comittment to equality is obvious. She'd be a double bagger though (sorry again, I'm so shallow) - certainly not my type.
4] Margaret Thatcher. Believe me, I'm no admirer but we'd need that leadership DNA in the gene pool. As for the physical, well let's not even go there.
5] Jenny Agutter. Older now, but still the sexiest woman alive. Another good actress to donate her genes and because she seems to enjoy displaying her body..
6] Doris Day. Earth Mother skills/qualifications.
The rest are all dead. However, if they were still with us and were contemporary:
7] Jacqueline du Pre. To play me the cello after we've made love. The ultimate in sensuality..
8] Ann Frank (as in " The Diary of " ) - for her humanity and inspirational qualities.
9] Marilyn Monroe. In the hope that in this adversity she would finally find her individuality and serenity. Then I could stop having 'emotional rescue' fantasies about her, as well as the more earthy physical ones ..
10] Florence Nightingale. We'd need those nuturing and healing genes.
I'm sure I've forgotten loads of people. I haven't included family/partner as this is a hypothetical excercise!

This is indeed proving to be an interesting and revealing exercise. Adey, I hope your significant other does not read your response - you've brought a spare Kate Bush and several dead people in her stead. ;D J/K, I will begin discussing my own and other peoples choices as we go. I'm short on time for now tho..

2] Cate Blanchet. Because she is a formidable actress whose chameleon like qualities could bewitch and entertain any group of partners. That whore! j/k. She is an aquired esoteric taste, not uncommon to the proclivities of this group. Others that may fit into that niche would be e.g. Milla Jovovich or Chloe Sevigny. Can't agree here. Too many other multi-faceted types available. Modesty and etiquette will not be an issue here. We must re-write the rules. Besides 'sexiest in the world' is far overstated. Too boring. Great, we're all out building a brave new world and you're lounging about. Would you care for some grapes? Agree. Your best choice by far. 'Too fragile, self-centered and superficial. Also a good choice. I'm sure they won't mind you frollicking about with MS du Pre ;D

7] Jacqueline du Pre. To play me the cello after we've made love. The ultimate in sensuality.. I didn't know you were a du Pre fan also. Wow! Have you seen the film Hilary & Jackie or read the book A Genius in the Family? I think you may have touched on something else we have in common, Adey. ;D I have always loved the cello and she has become my favorite. I get chills when I hear her play and think about the loss. She was my age when her career was ending. I can't imagine having such a diagnosis. She truly has a voice through her cell and interpretation that is unmatched.

The above was referring to Cate Blanchett. I think this is a harsh. I really like her and think she is a very attractive and talented actress.

The above was referring to Cate Blanchett. I think this is a harsh. I really like her and think she is a very attractive and talented actress. Maybe I was a bit insensitive, I find her lovely AND talented, as I do the other two actresses that I thought did not fit the 'classic' Hollywood beauty criteria. ps Maybe we should discuss my irreverant comments on the 'what's so funny' thread. This is precisely what puts humor on a razor's edge sometimes.

Great we're all out building a brave new world and you're lounging about. Would you care for some grapes? Yes. Peel me one will you? Blanchett is extraordinary - maybe the best of her generation. Her peformance in Elizabeth was nothing short of magnificent. Otherwise, thanks for your comments - rest assured I am not offended by any of them!

She was my age when her career was ending. I can't imagine having such a diagnosis. She truly has a voice through her cell and interpretation that is unmatched. Yes, I have become a big admirer of Miss Du Pre. Obviously I was familiar with the name, and once played the Scheidler Violin and Classical guitar duet with a guy who'd transcribed the violin part onto the cello. He told me then (some years ago) all about Jacqueline, but I wasn't really listening at the time. It wasn't until I bought the classic Concertos as performed by her, that I really started to appreciate her amazing, emotional playing. It's almost a cliche, but the E minor Elgar Op.85, is top 5 in my desert island disks. I read the " Genius in the Family " book before buying and seeing the film. Both are fantastic stuff, though they both dwell rather too heavily on the unusual husband sharing arrangement of the sisters. Especially the film. Theirs was an amazing enough story even without it. Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths gave wonderful performances and deserved their Oscar nominations. The moment in the film where Jacqueline was reduced through degenerative illness to playing a drum (and missing the cue at that) was heartbraking..
