I knew you had good taste. Steely Dan has been one of my all-time favorites for 30 years. They are recent Grammy winners and have a new CD out 'Everything Must Go" (The website is awesome) I think Kate has already drawn from them (see Gaffaweb 'Them Heavy People' go to "Steely Dan") not so much their sound, but their strong use of quality session muscians and collaborators. Also their out of synch phrasing and odd lyrics. If Kate were to use any inspirations from other styles; I believe you are correct in saying that it would have her thumbprint on it. She is too creative to borrow substance. But the style can be re-invented. Which is what I would expect from the new project. Take for example, the classical music of Fredrick Delius. Her interpretation (Delius, Song of Summer) only contains the spirit of his influence. She has undoubtably been impacted by many stimuli over the past decade, family, friends, press?, literature, media...we;ll see how it comes out. I hope she hasn't been watching a lot of television., though.

How come everyone knows about Steely but me? Sto' I messed up your post. I'm sorry. I modified it while trying to quote you. Your observations about FM and 'TWL' similarities had never occured to me though. Kate had observed that Steely Dan hadn't reached large audiences in the UK. Her music likewise was not fully appreciated here in the US. There are die-hard fans here (like me) but did you know that she never had more than a top 30 hit here? It was 'RUTH'. I don't think she feels the need to promote or do media events here. ; That or we have short attention spans.

My bad, Zan. But yes I did! You are right. Why did I not ever notice? It was so suprising to read about Kate's fondness of Becker and F agen (The skip is to avoid the censors! ) I had independently loved both artists' works, and never compared them. That's not entirely true, I had noticed how they both used the best muscians and had unusual cadence and lyrics. (see my earlier posts on Kate's influences). But since you brought the comparison; listen to 'Peg' after the aforementioned tracks! Let me know. She credits this song also in influencing 'Why Should I Love You.'

Sto' I messed up your post. I'm sorry. I modified it while trying to quote you. quote] How dare you! LOL, don't worry - "Quote" and "Modify" ARE very similar! Zan, what I said before Al' deleted it all , was that the beat/rhythm in "The Wedding List" sounds like it's just been extracted from "FM"! Well observed, I'd never have spotted it

Another odd thing...I just wrote about Kate and sarcasm in another post before reading this And again, I was being sincere but I didn't say what I meant to...I meant that they're very CLOSE to each other, not that they're similar I have deleted a post of mine once when I wanted to modify it, which is even worse

But I DO appreciate well crafted sarcasm! ;D As long as it's in good spirit. Kate may not agree, but some sarcasm is actually worthwhile. It should never be malicious. But, it is often a fun way to stimulate thought, make interesting conversation or make constructive criticism a little more palatable.
